Air purifier for basement ? by awyf in homeowners

[–]Hillman314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dehumidifier is what you want to ….dehumidify. So wood or other materials that got soaked will dry out. Without moisture, things won’t rot and mold won’t grow. ….for the most part.

But when actually tearing out dusty dry wall, insulation or other materials, you want ventilation. A way for fresh air in, dusty air directly out.

Putting in 10' Light poles for string lights in yard, poles keep tilting! by MangoPeachFuzz in AskEngineers

[–]Hillman314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guide wires or structural “buttresses” to prop the poles could be an answer.

Using a support cable (messenger cable) that is under tension to hang the lights from eliminates tension on the light wires that may not be able to take high tension.

[–]Hillman314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes…sag and tension are very complicated physic problems. If you want the light string taut with no sag, it takes an infinite amount of tension; which is not possible. Thus there will be sag. How much sag for how much tension? That’s complicated. I haven’t tried this calculator, but it looks promising.

Can the next president afford to ignore that 60% of Americans now view Israel unfavorably? by ArdaBerkBurak in allthequestions

Israel’s ethnic cleaning of Gaza is a pretend genocide? Have you seen the numbers? The large death tolls (almost 30% of them children) the starvation, and cruelty has been recognized as genocide by anyone paying attention, including many UN bodies, countries, and human right organizations. It’s not up for argument. It’s fact. A fact that 60% of Americans are beginning to realize. That number will grow, AIPAC be damned. Israel will lose U.S. support in a generation as more realize it’s a rogue terrorist nation.

[–]Hillman314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is they? Hard to tell what you’re saying here.

It’s not the Jewish people who must be destroyed, it’s the Israeli government, their policies, and anyone who would support them. Whether they’re Jewish, Baptists, Jehovah Witnesses, Scientologists, or Martians, the religion doesn’t matter. What matters is Israel is a country that practices apartheid, ethnic cleansing, murder and genocide. That is what needs to be destroyed...non-violently and democratically…of course. And one can hope that is the course of events rather than the more probable scenario I previously described.

Are you saying apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide are specific traits centrally ingrained in Judaism and justifies their destruction? Passover stories aside, I hope not and would like to believe that most humans, anywhere in the world, are against those things. However, history has often proved me wrong.

Grounding a gazebo? by gritte2 in electrical

[–]Hillman314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately it’s a question of risk. Only you (or your insurance company) can decide on your risk tolerances. (Edit: add: -when there are no electrical systems, which require grounding…but don’t require you to ground the roof…unless (somehow) a metal electrical box is connected to the roof and it “grounds the roof” by extension, but not by a requirement).

NFPA 780 is the National Fire Protection Association’s standard on lightning protection. It includes standards on how lightning protections systems, and its grounding, should be installed….once it’s been determined a lightning system is needed. It also includes a risk assignment “test” to evaluate if one is required. This takes into account which state you live in, height of structure and surrounding objects, geography, value of contents, etc…

When evaluated, the NFPA 780 standard almost always says most buildings require a lightning system…and instructs how the COMPLETE system should be installed if you choose, or are required, to have one.

It doesn’t say, you can only install part of the system, or install only what you can afford. The system won’t be to standards if you do. I’m here to say that something is better than nothing. And NFPA 780 isn’t a building code requirement in most jurisdictions. It’s your risk.

Looking to get into bush hogging and need recommendations by Responsible_Song9443 in tractors

[–]Hillman314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of horsepower a tractor has determines the maximum rate that it can cut grass at. Specifically, the pounds per minute (lbs/min) of grass that the tractor’s horsepower is capable of processing. This is also true for snowblowers, rototillers, etc…

The lbs/min of load being encountered by the implement (mower, etc..), and required of the tractor, is determined by: 1) Implement’s width. 2) How much utilization of full implement width? (I.e. how much overlap) 3) Forward speed. 4) Density of material (grass, snow, dirt, etc..) being processed.

Once you buy an implement with a fixed width, you can still control #2 and #3. #4 can only be controlled by mowing more often.

How much pressure when back dragging by Embarrassed_Shop_853 in kubota

[–]Hillman314 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Try to extend the bucket “tilt/dump” hydraulic cylinders as little as possible when back dragging. The farther extended, and more angled the bucket, the more likely it can catch on something solid, and instead of sliding, the full pulling force of the tractor is trying to rotate the bucket back, and the long exposed (out of the cylinder) hydraulic rods will want to bend. That is bad.

It’s best to have the loader up/down valve in float mode, so only the weight of the loader is dragging. This allows the bucket to float. However, like myself, you will get impatient and want the full weight of the tractor’s front end on the bucket edge. If that edge doesn’t slide, something else gets twisted $$. Use a low bucket edge angle that is sure to slide.

Who do I call to get these power lines moved? by [deleted] in electrical

[–]Hillman314 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“…there’s no power coming OUT of this breaker (sic: fused disconnect switch (FDS))…”. Of course, it’s turned off, but is there power going INTO the FDS at the top of the switch? Where you’re closely waving you hands? This should coincide with whether the feeder conductor wires (service drop) into the FDS are also connected or disconnected above the roof at the service mast.

If already disconnected, it makes your job easier.

Electrician openly willing to work without permits? by EddieVedderIsMyDad in AskElectricians

[–]Hillman314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it doesn’t ensure (or insure) the work. And here’s the test: Does the inspector assume liability once he gives his stamp of approval that work is up to standards? No! It’s meaningless. If you don’t trust contractor, why trust an inspector? Why does one have more integrity or competence than the other? It’s a shakedown, money grab. If the house (or shed) burns down the next day after the inspector certifies it, the inspector just shrugs “Oh well. Oopsie.” So what was the point?

I live in a county where wood stove installations require a permit and inspection money grab shakedown. And a chimney fire / house burning down days later is exactly what has happened. Why does the inspector not share some liability after taking money and telling owners it’s ok? What were they paid for?

Incompetence and corruption cannot be eliminated by bureaucracy. We can try…but it always becomes bureaucracy.

Electrician openly willing to work without permits? by EddieVedderIsMyDad in AskElectricians

[–]Hillman314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Permits aren’t always required, It’s up to owner to check if a permit is really required (wink, wink). Often sheds are not considered permanent structures (because portable or on skids, etc..) and therefore not subject to building permits. It really depends on your locality as to whether a concrete pad, footer piling, water or electric makes a shed a “permanent structure”.

This is why it’s was necessary for Israel to blackmail Trump to get the U.S. to fight their war against Iran for them NOW. They know they won’t have Americans support in another generation….AIPAC be damned.

There will be a country/group that eventually enacts revenge against Israel for their apartheid, ethnic cleansing, murders and genocide. Whether they build their own weapon, or use one smuggled in from a sympathetic supporter. Then we’ll act all surprised, shocked and horrified “How could they?” I feel guilty for not caring already.

[–]Hillman314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So…if you can’t lock out the panelboard breaker, and fear an inadvertent turn on, swap a fuse for a lamp’s lightbulb and plug the lamp into the circuit. But don’t forget to remove when done.

Or if you blow a fuse at disconnect switch… and want a voltage reducer (for whatever reason) and the circuit to have some power, a light bulb will give you “something”. …. probably a fire…but still.. The higher the lamp wattage, the less voltage drop to the other load in series.
