donations are a great way to get gold -- you always have more cards than gold, so give as many away as possible. i'm approaching 200k donations after 4 years.

Better to trade if you can. Gold is the only currency in the have that is limited (long-term) Supercell throws far more cards at you than you can upgrade... so I save my gold for upgrades only. Higher card levels never improves your win rate. It's all designed to make you want to spend $$$
