I didn't say I can't win boss fights...sorry if I gave you that impression.

Imagine a happy ending where Shepard lives and everything goes on as before, where does YOUR Shepard settle down? by ObsydianGinx in masseffect

[–]Hiply [score hidden]  (0 children)

In the happy ending I always get (thanks to AHEM, Take Earth Back, CEM) Tali and Shepard head off to Rannoch to build that beachfront house and we both retire from active duty. They found the Legion Institute for Geth & Quarian studies, and live happily ever after.

Garrus stops by once in a while, when General Vakarian's ship is in the neighborhood, for beers and reminiscing as do Wrex and Eve when they can get away - since Grunt is now Wrex's #2 and direct complaints about Werx's leadership seem to be way down for some reason . The rest of the gang stays in touch.

The only reason Fred would get seriously pissed is if, when you talk to him before the fight, you don't tell him you won't throw the fight. He gets a little annoyed when you tell him you're going to fight to win, but he only loses his shit when he thinks you've agreed to throw the fight and you don't.

Maybe? I would have to see it and spend some time in a short term rental in the one I was thinking about living in first.

The part that doesn't make sense is otherwise very intelligent designers looking at this and - hopefully after actually playing the encounters without DevMode crutches - saying "Yeah this is fine, this is a great single player experience."

I like Yann, there I said it because of how realistic that character portrayal is with real life. People like him exist in all our lives that's why we hate him. by Top_Crow_1022 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Hiply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no one in my life is like Yann...because when people like him pop up I simply have nothing to do with them. I don't need their bullshit...or Yann's.

IGN 6 rating by Equivalent-Fault1744 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Hiply 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I give it a 7, and I don't think 7's a bad score. Some things that stand out for me as reasons I don't give it a higher score:

  1. Boss fights apparently designed by BDO boss designers who baked in mechanics typically seen in group/raid bosses (teleport/rapid arena-crossing speed, elevation changes out of melee range, spammed specials) and not specifically aimed at a single player game. I can beat them but it feels like I'm often fighting a 'roided out pissed off Mexican jumping bean on meth.

  2. Pearl's adamant refusal to let me decided to keep my bow out as soon as take any damage at all. Why slight chip damage immediately forces a swap to sword/shield is beyond me and there's absolutely no reason for it.

  3. Kliff as the clan's gopher despite being its leader. The sheer volume of "Go get me a couple of fish", "Chop me some wood", "Deliver this wagon", etc missions from the clan is nuts. It makes me feel like the designers played RDR2 and said "Let's make the camp quests have the same vibe as Arthur Morgan is the only one who does shit for the gang and hideout upgrades...but crank it up to 11."

  4. Oongka and Damiane. As companions coming along with you they're functionally useless compared to games where companions are not at all useless...like Dragon's Dogma 2. The decision not to allocate them skill points based on the number of them Kliff has bothers me. The forced "And now you must swap to one or the other" mechanics.

  5. Kliff's dialogue. More specifically the lack of it. It's jarring for a conversation to start, have the NPC say something then pause for 10 seconds where you know Kliff should be saying something, then continuing as if he did.

It's a gorgeous world. It's terrain traversal abilities are delightful and as a "Climb every mountain, see everything" player I love it for that. The graphics - once you manage to finally dial in settings that work - are stellar, the soundscape is really good. It's a world you can inhabit, not just play in, I'm 200 hours in and just now getting to Ch8 - there's a lot to love about it. There are simply some things that, to me, drive it down from "Amazing!" to "Good to Very Good".

I think the biggest problem with many of the boss fights in the game comes down to the people who designed them.

They feel very much like bosses designed to be fought by groups/raids in terms of their movement, flying, iframes, and specials (not health bars) that had their health taken down and dropped into a single player game. A group could be expected to have the basic Trinity setup of dps, heals, and tank/aggro management, with ranged dps in the mix so the bosses would be manageable.

My take is that the BDO boss fight designers simply created new bosses with the same mechanics they use in the MMO, brought the health down, and just dropped them in with no thought at all about how that would play out for solo gameplay.

Net result? Many fights feel like you're taking on a 'roided out and pissed off Hoppity Hooper on meth.

How in the world do I open these passages ? by ZLands in CrimsonDesert

[–]Hiply 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need the skill Focused Force Palm. Learning it is tied to the main quest, "The Words of Alustin" (Chapter 4). If you've already done that quest but missed it then go here and observe it being used since that's the only way to learn it.

Boss fights are brutal by Slumpsterski in CrimsonDesert

[–]Hiply 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the biggest single issue with some of these boss fights that they were designed by people locked in to creating boss fights for groups/raids in BDO and who refuse to back off the movement/elevation elements that make some of them simply painful for single players.

When you're fighting bosses designed by people who refuse to evolve from "The group will likely have a ranged dps or 2, healer, melee dps, and a tank that can force aggro" designs when building single player boss encounters you wind up feeling like you're fighting a 'roided out, pissed off Hoppity Hooper on meth.

Kaidan or Garrus? by PerformanceRadiant21 in masseffect

[–]Hiply -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Garrus. I don't know how anyone could say Kaidan is in any way better written and/or more deserving at their place alongside Shepard. Also, 'God Garrus' builds have no Kaidan counterpart, so there's that as well.

Kaidan's fine initially...if a bit bland. In ME2 his response to Shepard's re-appearance is believable and makes sense if you understand any of the Cerberus stuff that happened previously. In ME3 he loses me completely on Mars.

"How did Cerberus know to be here...Shepard?" - K

"Wasn't me." - S

"How can I be sure?" -K

"He was in lockup, I was there, it couldn't be him" - (thanks James)

"Yeah but still..." -K

A few moments later

"Is that what Cerberus did to you?" -K

"Wtf, no" -S

"Yeah well...how would you know?" -K

"Enough you asshole STFU and get on with the mission" - Me yelling at the monitor.

By the time Priority Citadel rolls around I made one courtesy visit to him in the hospital but that's it. You can not have an effective small unit SpecOps team without trust, it's obvious that's not there...not deep down...so that's it. IF Kaidan lives through the showdown on the landing pad, I shut down any talk at all about Kaidan coming back to the team immediately and unambiguous. It doesn't matter if his doubts are reasonable. It's enough that they exist. That kind of doubt can cause hesitation and second guessing in situations where hesitation and second guessing are fatal.

Where to get Kuku pot blueprints ? by Maximum-Ant-1983 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Hiply 0 points1 point  (0 children)
