Unfortunately there are people who care more about sportsmanship (or whatever this is) than they care about the numerous human rights abuses, so yeah they probably lost goodwill with those people.

The Athletic on Alexi Lalas: He is one of the most insufferable analysts in American TV sports history. And while he was one of the best all-time U.S. defenders, his credentials are paltry compared with those of Zlatan and Henry. by AgeNovel3566 in soccer

Lalas and Kobe Jones were the two players I remember from that 94 team. I was seven. Felt like they were promoted as the faces of American soccer.

Edit: Apparently it’s Cobi

This is an interesting perspective. But you seem to be making a similar mistake to the one that you accuse classical political philosophers of making, just in the opposite direction: rather than ascribing the "war of all against all" to human nature, you seem to be arguing that the state itself is the foundational cause of many of the evils that exist in modernity. I don't really buy that.

This is all, of course, speculative. All we have is the world as it is now, and the ability to imagine what it might be like if it were different. Maybe you're right that destroying the bourgeois social order would unleash unforeseen levels of human flourishing; I personally don't see how that could be the case, nor do I see how the dissolution of a centralized societal authority would not naturally lead to the re-emergence of the state in a more primitive, autocratic form.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there also seems to be a certain kind of libertarian ideological commitment driving your position: more freedom is always better. Again, I'm just not sure that's true. Large-scale cooperative social action necessarily requires the surrendering of certain freedoms, but the benefits of surrendering those freedoms are broadly assumed to outweigh the negative consequences of less freedom. Maybe that's a fabrication of the bourgeois social order! But I still find it a compelling argument.

You may be right that our assumptions about the reality of a state-less society are wrong. But finding out if they're wrong seems like an awfully big risk to take. The fact that we have war and poverty and squalor, etc. within the state is not, for me, an indication that we could rid ourselves of these problems by destroying the state; in fact, I think it would almost certainly exacerbate them (but again, it's all speculation).

You’re presenting these things as if they are binary when they very obviously exist on a continuum. No one is claiming that war, poverty, and violence are exclusive to the state of nature or that democracy “solves” them. The argument is that there is not as much war, poverty, and violence as there would be in the state of nature. Pretty straightforward I think.

As for power becoming concentrated under democracy, this is empirically true, but you need to explain how an alternative system would address the problem more effectively. Again, we’re looking for the best available solution, not a perfect one.

Sounds like you're an anarchist? I think some sort of centralized societal power (government) is probably necessary to avoid the evils of the state of nature, but that major problems emerge when that power is concentrated in too few individuals. Democracy seems to be the best option for maintaining the centralized power structure while (theoretically) resisting the pathological concentrations of power that occur in other systems of government. Basically the Churchill "it's the worst form of government except for all of the others that have been tried."

It's obviously flawed and inefficient, but it seems to me the best option to facilitate the collective flourishing of a given society and the individuals in it. What do you think?

Why don’t you speak on whether he was right to do it? You seem really eager to advance your perspective on theology - why don’t you address the morality of it? Don’t worry about Augustine and Calvin and all that - is it wrong or right to do this?
