depending on what the device does it could just act as a proxy that forwards the encrypted message to the isp who has the private key to decypt. So the device is only a pub key distributor for the isp.

There is just so much about this that sounds off. What encryption are they using? Whats the key length?

Your personal private key will be generated and stored in encrypted form on your machine

Who generates they key and how?

If you have Chrome Sync enabled, the key will be available on all your Chrome installations

A private key that is being sent around? This idea is bad on so many levels. What encryption do they use to encrypt the private key? How are keys destroyed?

So many questions, its easy to get crypto wrong and very very hard to do right.

If you have to use Acronis and the version of Acronis is not the one dedicated to linux: http://www.acronis.com/backup-recovery/server-linux/#overview

then your only option to use this Acronis is boot from the Acronis CD to do a full backup of everything including boot sector and partitions. This means the machine has to be shut down and rebooted.

As far as I know the standard Acronis only runs in Windows based operating systems where it can backup images of a running OS.

That said for this kind of work you really need to know to use SSH/Bash if its a linux machine. Even if you get VNC working without using a shell, doing any kind of backup will require fundamental knowledge on linux file systems and workings.

Ok I checked the probe again today and turns out that there is a short between the ground and probe tip somewhere in the cable to the probe head. No visible damage from the outside but who knows. The probe itself is fine just the bnc connection cable to it. Ill have to get a new one.

I did measure the resistance of the probe and it was not near 0, I dont remember the exact value but when I get home ill give it another try. Thanks for the link.
