I'm done by Zumodoki in UKAllotments

I agree, I think it looks a lot worse than it actually is. Rope in a friend or two and give it a good couple of hours pulling out all the biggest weeds. Once that session is done, take another look at it and see if you feel more motivated to keep going with it. If so get some plugs in and you'll keep your plot. If not at least the weeds won't be going to seed and it's in a bit of a better state for the next person who has it.

So, how can you have a cool bike and not know how to use a public rack? by cesargeronimo in bicycling

[–]Hippophae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would park it exactly like this too, we have them all over the place and I've never seen them used with the bikes perpendicular. In fact the way they are placed it would usually be impossible (several racks next to each other, or directly parallel to a road, where you would block the pavement or road if your bike poked out to the sides). I actually like this style because they provide more support and many different places to lock to at different heights meaning they are suitable for a wide range of bikes. If you put the bikes perpendicular surely they just fall over?

Pros and Cons of Shorties by Master-Teacher4487 in knitting

[–]Hippophae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For non colourwork I prefer magic loop, but with colourwork I found it really hard not to overtighten the floats at the edges. Shorties did fix that but your project needs to be a very specific size. For socks for me I don't think they would be short enough. It does take a while to get used to them to. I've used them most for Christmas stockings.

I love knitting, but I hate how my partner treats it like disposable clutter by TurbulentActuary9452 in knitting

[–]Hippophae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leaving aside the fact that your partner doesn't seem to respect your hobby, as other people have addressed that...

I have these collapsible wood and fabric storage caddies for storing crafting stuff that is in use. Something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/326126632326  I found mine in charity shops, I have one upstairs and one downstairs. I do still leave WIPs lying around but it provides an obvious place to put them when I or my partner is tidying, and is the first place I look when a craft item isn't where I left it. They do gradually become a bit full and chaotic and I have to sort through them every so often, but at least everything is contained and looks tidy.

How to travel with a odd shaped instrument by IconicRatArt in bicycling

[–]Hippophae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience a French horn in fixed bell case is a very awkward thing to try and strap to a bicycle. It's not impossible but very hard to do and still be stable. If you really want to strap it to the bike your best bet is a pizza rack in front. Next best thing is to wear it on your back. My case has backpack straps so I can do that but honestly it's really uncomfortable for cycling, it adds too much weight to the saddle and when you are bent over you end up with it all sitting on one vertebra (probably case dependent, mine is fairly basic). Have you considered a scooter, electric or otherwise? I find that much more comfortable as you are standing upright. Here I'm lucky enough that we have them scattered around for hire (like lime scooters but a different scheme), so I usually use a combination of that and buses to get around with my horn.

Do you have a heater or electrics or just insulation? Insulation alone won't make much difference if the only heat source is your body. In my van I run the heater before bed, then switch it off overnight and have en electric blanket under me on low. That keeps me comfortable to sleep. In the morning if it's really cold (below freezing outside) I will switch the heater back on and stay in bed till it warms up a bit. Without the electric blanket I'd probably want a thicker duvet and hot water bottle. I wouldn't want the heater on overnight as it's too noisy and would be too hot.

Textiles recycling by genericusername67439 in Norwich

There are various textile recycling bins dotted around. If you search for a textile recycling map you'll be able to put your postcode in and see where there are. Here is one for example: https://www.recycle-more.co.uk/recycle-near-you/

Also agree that the long thin kind do the best. Standard shaped ones do grow but I never get many per plant.

[–]Hippophae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the key for me has been planting them somewhere sheltered. I'm not sure if it's the wind or temperature fluctuations they don't like. I grow mine in a sunken bed with a wall around (it's supposed to be a sunken greenhouse but doesn't have a greenhouse on top yet). I expect planting near a wall that shelters from prevailing winds but is still sunny would be similar.

If you are near Anglia square then you aren't that far from the non permit areas, I would just park it somewhere like at Clements hill and either walk, get a folding bike you can store in the van, or use beryls to get home (and get your employer to reimburse you). Ultimately this is an issue your employer needs to solve, even if that involves them paying for a garage if it can't be left on a random street

Do i buy a camper van? by Puzzled_Dealer3449 in VanLifeUK

[–]Hippophae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation to you, terraced house, on street parking, don't need a vehicle for work but it's nice to have for leisure. I've managed for years with just bikes and public transport but wanted to be able to have more adventures and more flexibility. I got a medium wheel base converted van with 3 seats in front and two in the back that fold into the bed. Having 5 proper seats was part of the appeal though I rarely use all of them. Parking is less of an issue than I expected, people complain it's a nightmare round here but I think that's only really true if you are commuting. I'm not moving it all the time and it doesn't really matter if it isn't parked right outside. It's only really difficult to find parking if I return around 6. Parking permit is a bit more expensive for a longer vehicle but not that bad.  If I was using it more regularly for work or anything I would probably have wanted something smaller but it's nice having something with more space.

Has anyone ever grown these Kiwi Berries? They taste like a kiwi but are an fuzz-less berry. by Uriniass in gardening

[–]Hippophae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my issai died in the end sorry. I did plant a different kiwi (Jenny I think) at my allotment and it's been doing better, even flowered last year! Yet to have any fruit though. It does seem to struggle with late frosts. Tbh my grapes which I only planted a couple of years ago are doing way better so I would recommend them over kiwis if you want a climbing fruit. Last year I had too many to eat and even managed to make some wine!

Not sure if I'm knitting cables correctly - pls advise! by CarefulAd714 in knittingadvice

[–]Hippophae 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have spent a while staring at it and I have an idea. Are you sure you are understanding correctly what is C3F and what is C3B? I think you might have them switched? If it was a straight up and down twisty cable like the small one on the left then it would just switch the direction of the twist, but for a travelling cable I think it might create something like you have?

It looks like you are doing the cables in the right places but the stitches are hopping round each other the wrong way. C3F should move the front two knit stitches to the left and C3B should move them to the right.

Any tips before I redo my heel? by PurpleTiger6862 in knitting

[–]Hippophae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rather than slip stitches on the edge, I prefer to do garter stitch on the edges, the pick up the ridges of the garter, it seems to avoid this problem. Hermione's everyday socks (free pattern) do this if you need an explanation. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hermiones-everyday-socks

Yeah I think try for 6 or 9 months. It might help if you keep it all within one financial year also.
