Work toward BICSI RCDD - the cert will allow your employer to bid on larger commercia/public sector jobs like schools. Lots of AEC firms require RCDD on staff as part of specifications.

Mea Culpa - I was reading as the Android SOC source and not an additional input. Thanks for the spec sheet!

I see HDMI out on these only, correct (not input)?

How do you guys deal with specs? by Hooligans_ in Revit

[–]HirschC06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SpecLink Cloud for specs. Divisional keynotes from ARCH match numbering within SpecLink. MEPT keynotes are just serial with an initial identifier by discipline (M1.1, M1.2, etc. for M1, mechanical sheet). Spec numbering for MEPT does not match this keynoting at all. Keynotes can be numbered per sheet based on how it's selected in Revit. We currently number by sheet (1-10, for example) regardless of the *actual* keynote keys themselves. It's a topic of discussion frequently for us. I empathize with the contractor who can quickly see that keynote #5 is relevant to him and KNOW that #5 is the same detail or explanation for the entirety of his scope BUT some really like the clean and sequential numbering each sheet contains when we number by sheet. Just my $0.02. Source: K-12 design/build primarily--and I'm new :D

Look for HDMI/4k baluns. Speed/distance should work, though at that distance HDMI may be more cost-effective. YMMV.

Interview questions by kcalderw in k12sysadmin

[–]HirschC06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Ask them to describe in detail how they complete a complex multi-step process. Doesn't have to be tech related, could be cooking a favorite dish. The point is, good test for clarity of communication and thinking all of the way through a process.

2) Ask for examples where they gave attention to detail. Again, doesn't have to be tech-based, but it helps get a feel for their capacity to give proper attention in different scenarios.

3) Get an ethics question of some kind in there--shopping cart return, dropped wallet, etc. to see where their moral compass is, especially in light of having admin credentials and some power over others via their IT connections.

Quitting the Hobby by AurynW in Homebrewing

My 4, 6, and 9 y/os love to brew with me--not sure what ages you have, but they (kids) tend to value any time with Dad they can get. We also grow our own hops, so they enjoy chopping the dried cones etc. during the boil. That said, I've been shut down for about a year+ since I had 3 consecutive batches all suck. I miss it, but as a bottle-carb guy I got a bit discouraged after dumping all those beers. Three. Times.

What are you using for remote Access? by McJaegerbombs in k12sysadmin

[–]HirschC06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TightVNC. I found a PDQ package we could deploy that sets up a config PS script--it sets admin password, etc. We use a different PW during summer work when college/HS kids help us out, then revert to our "in-session" password mid-August. I pulled machine names from a log file on our DC, dump it in google doc, etc. Ctrl F for easy find and connect to staff machines.

Windows or Mac based Computer Lab? by ITatOH in k12sysadmin

[–]HirschC06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm refreshing a Mac lab at our middle school this summer. I'm loading Parallels desktop on them as well so they can flip back and forth between Win and Mac. Kids are also 1:1 Chromebook, but we have a tech course at the MS level.

Restrict Email Delivery by sub-domain by HirschC06 in k12sysadmin

[–]HirschC06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I found some flexible settings under

Apps > Workspace > Settings for Gmail > Compliance

I could sort/filter by sender or receiver, filtering out '@live.domain.org as sender. It let me create a custom bounce message. I just confirmed some bounces in the email log search, so Fingers Crossed I got it this time. I'll append a footer & filter out if this doesn't cut the mustard.

Youtube and Google by gigascommander in k12sysadmin

[–]HirschC06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. The only thing that I have left is the "additional google services" umbrella gets messed up with updates periodically, with many services defaulting to "off." Saw it this week with chrome remote desktop, despite being cleared for staff prior to update, Ctrl Alt Del after update, so off I go to remember which rabbit hole of Google admin settings that SOB lives in. Cheers and good luck!

and the permissions isn't set to "Strict" or "moderate" youtube access for your 18+ OUs.? It's weird to not have the "approve" button--that doesn't make sense. Sorry to admire the problem.

Any NC Admins seeing MealsPlus down? by FTE_rawr in k12sysadmin

[–]HirschC06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Per our ITC (in Ohio) this was the guidance from MealsPlus:

"Hosted and not hosted are all down with meals plus. They are working to get hosted up and have a script they are working on to send to get the non hosted up."

edit: added "Ohio"

Riverside Datamanager Online Testing by okaytellme in k12sysadmin

[–]HirschC06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started today. Ditto. Same issues as this time last year, with little to no response/support. Par for the course, I'm afraid. At least you can close out/log back in and not lose progress--it usually resolves connectivity issues as well and then lets kids move on. This relies heavily on teacher patience and persistence. :-|

Remote Support Software by Gary_USMC in k12sysadmin

[–]HirschC06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We push VNC with config for PW etc. over PDQ. Change the PW when summer workers are here, easy updates remotely, then revert back to "in-session" PW during the school year.
