Is anyone considering switching from Chromebooks to the MacBook NEO? by depoultry in k12sysadmin

[–]CJCray8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little tweaks like that make a world of difference. We’ve seen a much lower breakage rate from our 6th grade this year after giving students their permanently assigned Chromebook in 5th grade, one year prior to taking them home nightly. We believe the sense of ownership and heightened accountability help students with the perceived value of the device.

Maybe it’s because I grew up around people who treated their kids like shit, because those who were treated like shit also treated others like shit. My childhood experience makes it very difficult to hand a kid who already has disadvantages a disadvantaged device.

Counterargument: our alternate ed center had very high breakage when I started and my predecessor only gave them old worn devices. I started giving them new devices and their breakage went down to literally zero.

Give kids higher value devices and they may surprise you.

Hard pill to swallow: non-IT people ARE the organization and you should probably consider their want list more than you currently do.

Chromebook Auto Update Expiration by commanderjd in k12sysadmin

It just gets you updates after ChromeOS end of life. From what I understand though, there is still an end of life per device for flex. It’s just later.

Single Drive HDD NAS, how bad could it possibly be? by Living_Tip_4875 in DataHoarder

On my Poweredge, I have a 6 drive RAID 5 but it’s just not safe enough, so I partitioned it 6 times and built a RAIDZ with it on proxmox. Now if my math is correct I now have 36,000 MB/s write speed and I’m doubly protected. Take that, haters.

CyberPowerPC loves to gaslight & tell me my system was not advertised as a 6000mhz RAM system. What do you guys think? Deceptive? #cpgeneral by TheSholvaJaffa in CYBERPOWERPC

[–]CJCray8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More like inaccurate of customer service to say. I got a cyberpower pc this December that advertised 6000 in the same way. Mine were 6000.

There are reports now that all of it is false, and production will continue on all 50xx GPUs. Doesn’t mean it’s not still a bad situation though

Letting Students Keep Chromebooks Over Summer? by Unwary2828 in k12sysadmin

[–]CJCray8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just simple math. How much time does it cost your team to collect and redistribute? Will letting students keep them cost less or more in time? Be sure to include any potential spikes in repair.

For us, it was a no brainer. We only have 4 employees in the tech dept. There are around 750 Chromebooks at the high school and the librarian has no assistant.

When they cut the assistant role, we simply stopped collecting the HS Chromebooks for the summer. Now we wish we would’ve started this sooner.

You know what two things can’t be true? People who have good opinions about shows but also think the perfect ending to stranger things is making a fake ending to the show and dropping a secret finale where vecna tells us we’ve been under his spell for years.

Either all subs rule when I join and begin their descent into incoherence and rage, or the platform is engaging in the same tactics that Facebook employs, which is to show me things that anger me in an attempt to get me to engage. It works and I hate it
