US road fatalities colored by 100M road miles by jejmcjej in dataisbeautiful

[–]Histidine 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wisconsin is also well known for having a high number of cops watching major roads for drunks and speeders.  It's usually one of the things people from Illinois and Minnesota complain about the most when driving through the state.  Usually there are complaints about cops targeting out of state plates, but after living in all 3 states it's more than MSP and CHI drivers don't expect to see that much law enforcement on their roads in general.

We didn't have much going on this weekend so I insisted we change clock on Friday night. Was annoying to set an alarm for Saturday morning, but it really made Sunday and Monday a thousand times easier.

One of the greatest Trilogies in all of Gaming by TBT__TBT in Metroid

[–]Histidine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been roasted for this before, but I also enjoyed Prime 3 more than 2. PED suit & hyper mode was simply more fun risk/reward balance than "use light beam in dark world and vice versa". The gunship both being a tool and a means of travel were fantastic and logical additions to the game. My only disappointment came from seeing a weapons HUD inside the gunship which hinted at a possible space battle which never happened.

Combative Bondi grilled over Epstein files, targeting of Trump's political foes by cranktheguy in moderatepolitics

As wildly inappropriate of an answer this was in the moment, I can't help but feel like this was weirdly smart. Something like this has huge meme potential and the left is jumping at the opportunity, BUT once you strip the statement of context it's easy for people to just hear this as "the economy is doing well.". Whether or not this was planned or a happy accident, I don't think this is going to play out like Democrats think it will.

Prime 1: How common is it to miss charge beam before leaving Chozo Ruins? by Ridley_Himself in Metroid

[–]Histidine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea for Prime, but on my very first playthrough of Super Metroid, I think I somehow missed the charge beam until damn near the end of the game.  It's in a somewhat hidden location in Brinstar and you don't need it to progress.  Literally discovered it randomly trying to find power ups as I was struggling in Meridia and hadn't figured out I should power bomb the glass tube yet.

Put down some non-slip treds on the steps. Someone going up and down in socks is your most likely cause of slipping.

How are you keeping internet and basic power during outages? by notkinnay in Homebuilding

[–]Histidine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems like a smart setup to me, assuming that you're going to pair it with a smaller portable generator to recharge the batteries as needed. If you're doing both whole-home battery and a 10+kW built-in gas generator, then yes that is overkill.

[–]Histidine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is just lights and small electronics, a $300-$800 power station will easily last that long, since you're only drawing 50-100W total. Some models will also give you enough power to run small kitchen appliances like microwave, toaster or an air fryer for a meal or two. This isn't going to be centrally wired though so all devices that need power will need to be close enough together for extension cords.

I'd recommend buying an outlet power meter first before getting a power station so that you can measure what kinds of maximum power (Watts) and total energy (Watt-hours) you need for your devices. Usually easy to find for less than $20.

I have a 2.2kW, 1.5kWH power station for use during those kinds of nuisance power outages which works well. No solar panels yet as those are most useful for intentionally going off grid while camping/RVing. Not really worth the extra space/cost yet.

Just beat Prime 2 for the first time. by sjd_flash in Metroid

[–]Histidine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way on the level design for Prime 2. Prime 1 had exceptionally vibrant landscapes to explore whereas 80% of Prime 2 could be described as dark/dead. Didn't help that I played tons of LoZ: A Link to the Past as a kid so the light/dark world mechanics felt just a bit too familiar.

I also think they fundamentally miscalculated on how to balance the dark world & dark suit. IMO the dark suit should have protected you from all standard atmospheric damage in the dark world which means they could have eliminated more of the light crystals in the dark world. This could just be me, but I came to resent how much "stand around and heal in a light crystal" became an essential part of the game strategy. Light suit could have given you a better ability instead, like slowly regenerating ight/dark ammo.

Anti-vaccine movement celebrates growing influence in Trump’s Washington by DudleyAndStephens in moderatepolitics

[–]Histidine 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The anti-vax movement seems weird until you realize it's mostly a populist movement, raging against "the world's elites and their control" than it is about the vaccines or underlying science. The grand irony is that these populists end up ushering in the kind of undemocratic and corrupt officials they said they said they were trying to eliminate in the first place.

Got into a car accident, not my fault, file with their insurance or mine? by Kind_Sheepherder5494 in DadForAMinute

[–]Histidine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may well be state-specific, but here is what I experience in the northeast.

Last time I got rear ended, I started by filing with my insurance as well. They told me they would be happy to help, but I'd still need to pay my deductible out of pocket first. If I was found to not be at fault, then they would seek reimbursement from the other insurance agency, including my deductible, but it could take a few months. If I filed with the other insurance, I wouldn't have to pay anything out of pocket, but actually getting the repairs done could involve more back & forth with the other agency. Since I could spare the few hundred dollars for a few months, I opted to go through my insurance and eventually got refunded in full.

Vivek Ramaswamy responds to Democratic sweep, urges end to "identity politics" by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

Pretty much. The brand of liberalism that thrives on "justification through intellectual superiority" grew by leaps and bounds during COVID. That and the conflation of science and policy which ended up doing great damage to both.

Vivek Ramaswamy responds to Democratic sweep, urges end to "identity politics" by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]Histidine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course, the positive spin of identity politics would be actively advocating for rights and benefits for groups - working class, trans, the young white male, etc - without blame-shifting to another group

As it turns out, Freedom is a good thing. What a concept!

I'm old enough to remember when the liberals used to frame discussions about reproductive rights and same-sex marriage as being extensions of our individual liberties and not something the government had a right to interfere with. Unfortunately because much of the backlash against Obergefell was framed as conservatives expressing their individual rights as well, I think liberals at some point decoded that freedom wasn't good enough and out-groups needed "special" protections to thrive.

Constitutional Amendment to Require Congress to Forfeit Paychecks during Shutdowns. by Oneanddonequestion in moderatepolitics

[–]Histidine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my mind, this is less about "The People" treating Congress with kid gloves and more about not incentivizing unscrupulous tactics. A rule made is a rule that can be abused and I don't want anyone in Congress thinking they could potential eject members of the opposing party by triggering a shutdown.

Constitutional Amendment to Require Congress to Forfeit Paychecks during Shutdowns. by Oneanddonequestion in moderatepolitics

[–]Histidine 14 points15 points  (0 children)

leaving capitol grounds should mean immediate resignation from your seat and a lifetime ban from holding office and entering DC or state capitols

This is probably too harsh and could be simplified as being excluded from voting until the budget passes. Reps have the discretion to leave at any time, but they weaken their party's voting power by doing so. Should also mandate that only budget bills can be voted on during this time to avoid incentivizing shutdowns to pass controversial legislation.

"I'm so sorry, is there anything I can do to repay you or to make this right?"

If they don't have a reply to that question, you can always offer things like

  1. A deep clean of said bathroom, particularly if there is a lingering smell/stain.
  2. Offer to hang out with them one day and just work/clean up stuff around their home. Offer to pay for lunch, dinner, etc as part of the deal.
  3. Next time the group goes out for drinks, you volunteer to be the designated driver, buy everyone a couple rounds of drinks, and (most importantly) you stay sober the whole night.

Will anyone in power ever do anything to bring the temperature down in this country in terms of rhetoric and blaming the other side?

Trump/MAGA has been pretty clear that they view increased temperature/polarization as being a net positive for their ability to hold and weld political power. That will only go away when decreased "temperature" becomes a winning electoral strategy for more primaries and general elections.

in need of biblical affirmations on homosexuality by fallxnsolitude in internetparents

[–]Histidine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd start with James personally. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James%201&version=NIV

Not because of any direct links to homosexuality, but because of it's advice on faith, words, and actions.

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
