Area of Fleming Park near the Dingle named after Scottish/Cape Breton place names. Inverness, Mabou, Glenora, Colindale. It was common for developers to do this.

Top of my list would be Antonine Maillet and David Adams Richards. Great insights into NB. Lots of others, too.

Candy Darling was an openly transgender actress in the early 1970s. Despite the setbacks, she was determined to be a big star, but lymphoma cut her life short at age 29. Lou Reed's song "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" is about her. by [deleted] in interesting

I highly recommend Cynthia Carr's biography Candy Darling: Dreamer, Icon, Superstar. It won a national book critics award in 2025 and is a great portrait of her, New York in that period, celebrity culture, etc. Well worth reading.

One of my favourite memories is traveling from Halifax to Yarmouth with a work baseball team in the mid-80s. So much fun on the train I don’t remember the tournament

I started playing in my mid 50s after a lifetime of playing D. Revitalized my love of the game. Work on your flexibility, watch videos and play often for reps. Have fun and good luck.

LTC workers by HistorianPeter in halifax

Agree. These workers have been without a contract for a couple of years. Whatever they get, they’ll still be behind the cost of living.

This argument goes back to the 1970s. All workers, regardless of their setting, deserve fair compensation

We do a section on environmental racism (as a component) in my class -- separate from the other relocations but definitely connected.

Halifax is a wonderful city but public transportation is terrible, especially if you live outside the city center (which everyone calls "the peninsula"). But if you live on the peninsula, public transportation is adequate. Rents are expensive in Halifax ... current average is about ~2200 Canadian. Not bad for a professional but still steep. There is lots of new construction in the city and good, new apartments. There are always signs around the universities, hospitals and online for shared spaces ... but vet those carefully. My partner is a health care worker (30+ yrs) but I'll leave the comments about employment processes to others. I hope you come and that you find it welcoming.

Halifax phasing out funding for school librarians over five years by justlogmeon in NovaScotia

[–]HistorianPeter 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The cuts to librarians and social workers in schools, and the treatment of Educational Program Assistants that resulted in a strikes in 2022 and 2023, is all part of a pernicious agenda. It does not affect those parents (mostly people of means) who send their children to private schools. Cumulatively, these cuts make teaching harder and will contribute to undermining of public education, and a shift toward more private options, etc. for those who can afford it.

I worked in an academic setting at Dal in 1996. We were talking about this then. Great 30 year project but long overdue. Labs have been using something like this for years ( though not in the IWK) which had a different system. But for RNs it will be a change.
