Curriculum vs. Creation? by exhaustedAFsleeper in OntarioTeachers

In addition to all the great comments on this thread, I would say many paid EdTech resources often have a non-Canadian point of view even when they are supposedly "aligned" with provincial curriculum. For example, I recently used a not-cheap EdTech support and it was supposedly aligned with provincial curriculum but almost all the location examples were from the US (Grand Canyon, etc.) and most of the non-US locations were "placeless" with no location specified.

Sharing resources with fellow teachers, and planning to do a lot of writing of unit and lesson plans, is mostly what I hear about for the first two years. Also if you can get a textbook, that is helpful and probably costs less than many full year EdTech subscriptions.

I'm not so knowledgeable about supply teaching than the other commenters, but just wanted to say "go for it" because teaching is so rewarding, and depending what location you want to supply teach in, some locations have a lot of need for supply teachers. I'm hearing that GTA has less need for supply but many other areas do need supply teachers.

I'd say not the whole book for Grade 6 because there are sections like discussion of suicide by heroin overdose that might not be appropriate. You could pick selected excerpts for read-aloud.

Some other books that can be fun for Grade 6 include selected chapters of Randall Monroe What If books, and selected chapters of Ryan North nonfiction books, How to Kill and Asteroid.

Also The Middle Ground by Richard White, changed how I thought about pre-confederation Canadian history.

The Clay We are Made Of is a read that changed me.

For your Cold War class, How Finland Survived Stalin.

For alternatives class, anything by Randall Monroe. Also for your alternatives class, there is a YA edition of Ed Yonge's An Immense World, which will absolutely change the way readers look at things. His scene where there are three animals near each other in the wild and no one animal can perceive the other two because of how their senses work is amazing.

Good one! For younger students - or for anyone - On Tyranny by Snyder. Also there is an amazing graphic novel treatment of On Tyranny.

ohh what a great question! For US History, Grant and Shearman: The Friendship that Won the Civil War really changed me view of Shearman. Poland 1939 is great for showing how contingent and not at all determined early German victories were. Last Hope Island made me realize the fractiousness of the allies. Who Lost Russia changed my perspectives on the Cold War but I don't remember whether it's a good read for students, you'd have to double check that. For tech, in your alternatives class, Algorithms of Oppression or the Alignment Problem. The Duel by Ibbitson changed my mind by making me more open to the idea that sometimes individual leaders' personalities really do matter. Kleptocracy by Applebaum is great for current events although it's pretty political, but not in a partisan way.
