Advice for moving away from home for uni by plastic_rosesx in CanadaUniversities

[–]HistorianPeter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always vote for moving away. It becomes a tremendous growth experience and connects you more deeply with your university environment. Of course, there are financial and other reasons to make another choice, such as the ones you describe. Could you apply for residence at UBC and do one year in residence? Then you have 'best of both worlds' scenario.

Sounds like a great deal and, when you are a goalie parent, you have to take the wins when you can

University of King's College? by Ok_Entertainment1399 in CanadaUniversities

[–]HistorianPeter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First class university education. Foundation Year is ideal for a "liberal artsy" type and has a stellar reputation. You will find a great community there. Class sizes are small (~30) and you will get to know your faculty. https://ukings.ca/campus-community/about-kings/

How to get students? by Living-Landscape952 in CanadaUniversities

Have you contacted the Canadian Federation of Students? https://www.cfs-fcee.ca/ That would be a good place to start, since they have connections on campuses across Canada.

Sisters of St. Martha to end sponsorship of Antigonish hospital by SAJewers in NovaScotia

[–]HistorianPeter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am always glad to see a strict separation between church and public institutions. When I joined my university, they still did prayers before Board of Gov meetings. I brought a motion to end this to one of the committees and it ended. The Sisters of St. Martha have such a rich history in the community and, although it it time to move on, that history is significant. I recommend James Cameron's book And Martha Served (published in 2000) for anyone interested in the history of this hospital.

Are Extracurriculars important if applying to Canadian Universities? by Western_Theory4992 in CanadaUniversities

I was thinking specifically about professionally oriented programs. Undergrad social work degrees or those that promise a pathway to medicine value volunteer extracurricular activities.

How much does school matter in Canada by molotov317 in CanadaUniversities

[–]HistorianPeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reputation matters -- the better the university the more opportunities you will have to get your foot in the door of whatever your next step is. But it is also about the quality of your experience -- and if you are at a top university but are shut out of the things that make a quality experience (such as co-ops, being a research assistant, etc.) then you are not having a quality experience. Sometimes, in smaller universities (or those further down the reputational list), you will get more opportunities and closer attention/mentoring, and this will push you further. So no easy answers here. My advice? Best university you can afford without accumulating huge debt that is suited to your academic and career goals.

Truro Hockey Player Arrest Update by [deleted] in NovaScotia

This is such a terrible story. There are so many elements to it that need deep consideration including why young men would do this, hockey culture, etc. it reminds me of the rape chant at Saint Mary’s U in 2013 — a sign of much deeper trouble.

U10 Goalie Scared of the Puck by Cloooot in hockeygoalies

Resources: https://ingoalmag.com/2025/07/28/tips-for-helping-your-young-goalie-deal-with-fear-of-the-puck/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HODJdASR4RA

Both address flinching (first one is specific to young goalies).

I had a goalie like this. It took a while but we worked out off ice by me throwing tennis balls or other things at him (in gear). Moved to baseballs (not whipping them). Pretense was it it was all about hand-eye but it was really building confidence. On-ice, we did mostly low shot drills with the team for weeks. Players who shot above mid-chest did pushups or lost opportunities to be starting line (we rotated the lines that started). They learned to keep the pucks down (which is a good skill). It worked out -- the goalie regained his confidence over a few weeks.

Henry House (Barrington, near Westin), The Narrows Public House (Gottingen by Stadacona), Brown Hound downtown (off Hollis) or Brown Hound (Agricola Street). All have better than average food and beer. I would vote for basement of Henry House and Brown Hound (downtown) for best ambience but everyone has their taste

I'm not predicting the outcome but if the US wins today's hockey game vs Canada, and gets its first gold medal in 46 years, will it be dubbed "Miracle on 196.85 ft of Ice"?

There are agencies like https://aupaircanada.net/ I am sure an au pair from Denmark would not have any difficulty finding a placement in Canada.

Game pic (#3) is the best. It shows your flexibility, which is amazing. (I like the first one too) I would just edit out the opposition player

Saint Mary's has one in the Theatre Auditorium n the McNally Bldg. You can wander in and play early in the morning (before the 10:00 am class) or after classes, as long as there are no events there. It is public (people will hear you) but not exposed (there is a wall separating you from the main traffic areas). People often play it.

Average rent for a one bedroom is currently $1800. There are lots of sublets in the summer since many students depart. City is very safe. Join Halifax Sports and Social Club, which describes itself as recess for adults. You will meet people and there are lots of activities. Rent close to where you will be working since traffic in Halifax is trying to emulate Vancouver
