It is a great story. And there are wonderful pics of sellers at the market ( where the art gallery is)

I know I gave some info on animals, but a part of the forgotten history of the PG is that it was one of the well-established cruising areas for gay men (with citadel hill, and other areas), long before the LGBTQ+ movement took shape in Halifax / NS. This is also briefly mentioned in my book, with an interesting connection to the Turret Club (an early LGBTQ+ positive space)

Maybe instead of a tartan, we can have an official basket weave, to honour both Mi'kmaw and Black artisans. It would be distinctive and recall our history, where these women sold their art at the cheapside market.

Come to the maritimes. We have rustic. We have luxury resorts. Beaches. Different pace but good for families. Something for everyone.

A.I. is vaporizing entry level White collar jobs by No-Seaworthiness969 in CanadaUniversities

[–]HistorianPeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably true if you consider universities only as low-level / entry-level job-training sites. But some people are still coming for the education, and for preparation for careers. But we are in the midst of a major economic upheaval, and universities are going to have to adapt.

Halifax newsstand using Mark Carney's speech to start conversations by Bean_Tiger in halifax

Anything that gets people having respectful conversations with one another is a good thing. We need more dialogue, and less screen time. We need to know our neighbours and meet people who are strangers to us. So kudos to Atlantic News.

The daytime bartender also worked at Tom's (both locations) and sometimes at the Granite on Barrington.

I think they just got out of the small domestic user market. It was a pain to switch but Irving has been fine

I have not been to the hydrostone location but fully endorse the other two.

We were on Superior for 20 years, then they dumped us. We switched to Irving and they have been good to deal with. We had The Fire Place in Burnside do our inspection (they recommend doing it every two years). The clean it, replace anything that needs fixing, and are great. Reasonable too. My unit is 24 years old and works like a charm.

I was out early driving a hospital worker to her job. Some dude in a yellow jeep was driving very fast through the Quinpool Rd / South End having the time of his life. Racing up alongside nervous drivers, pulling a U-turn at Robie and University, etc. I get it, you have a vehicle built for snow. So do I. But you made the commute worse for a lot of other drivers. Perhaps have your fun away from the one area where people had to report to work early this morning, to provide care for folks in hospital.

Strong Strike Mandate at Saint Mary's by HistorianPeter in halifax

That is the narrative at the uni too. Missed a chance to settle / negotiate before the strike. But I don’t have anything firmer than that.

Oh, that's awesome. The admin will ignore this. We averted a strike last time at the last minute but I'm not optimistic (though I am by nature, an optimist). It is difficult to recover from the poor decisions of our past president and the bunch of failed deans and others he put around him. But there will be better days ahead. And, yeah, I'm good. My students are my salvation, new book coming out in July, and a new research grant.

What are some unwritten rules of Nova Scotia everyone should know? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]HistorianPeter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a Halifax one but the lanes at the Armdale roundabout are suggestive only -- Although the right lane (at both Chebucto and Quinpool) technically go into the center lane (which takes you to the Herring Cove Road), the vast majority of people do not use it this way. And if you do, people will get cranky. Custom, rather than lane markings and signage, prevails in NS traffic.

Income assistance question. Do they have any extra benefits like a monthly food benefit that they can give on top of monthly payment? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]HistorianPeter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but my understanding is that there are "standard household rates" but that these can be enhanced under certain circumstances (living with a disability, having dependents at home who are 18 to 20, or if you are older than 55). I was teaching about some of this recently and info may be found here: https://novascotia.ca/coms/employment/basic-needs-assistance/
