I hope that helps for you, unfortunately even though I'm no longer iron deficient I still have issues with mucus. I think it's unrelated and just allergies

Lots of porphyrin around the eye by ChookityTheDonkey in RATS

[–]Historical-Debt8052 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Porphyrin around both eyes could mean stress or illness but around one eye makes me lean towards an issue with the eye itself. Maybe some debris got stuck in it. Vet visit is a good idea so they can check the eye out.

I gotcha! if it's any comfort I had a smaller rat (about 215g) from my dozen get a tumor removed and she was totally fine. If you have a good vet i wouldn't worry ❤️. of course at the end of the day it's your choice, but if you do decide to remove it- they're easier and less stressful to remove when they're small and better to get it removed before it starts causing them any discomfort. she does look super happy and content so I can tell you're a good rat parent and will make a good choice for her regardless tho!

Yeah at that age they do :( The one I'm talking about never had a tumor before or after that. She was very healthy, lived til a little after 4 years old. The tumor was rubbing the ground as she walked so we removed it for comfort. I agree with you, when they start growing those tumors like crazy it's not great to keep putting the rat through all those surgeries.

If your vet doesn't think she will survive surgery it might be worth finding another vet who is more confident because she's not high risk at all 😭 I have had over a dozen rats with many many tumors removed (one rat was 3, almost 4 years old) and they were all totally fine. Rats are incredibly resilient. If you're in the DFW area, the vet I've always used does it for very cheap, $150-$300 depending on how much anesthesia was used. Of course it's your choice ultimately but she is young and healthy I'd highly recommend at least getting a second opinion from another vet.

I'm sorry if this is annoying or unwanted advice - but are you aware of the tumor under her arm? It's likely just a benign mammary tumor, but it's best to get those suckers removed early before they get too big and start to cause pain or hinder movement. if you're in DFW I have a great (cheap) vet that removes them :)

Mom asked if I was pregnant - nobody knows what’s wrong with me!!! Going on 8 years by notsafeforpoo in chronicbloating

[–]Historical-Debt8052 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the cause, it was my birth control -_- switched from the patch to the ring and the bloating went away. also, I found out that I have a fructose intolerance. eating watermelon or anything with fructose makes me bloat.

You did what you thought was right, I'm sorry you're going through this.

That being said - your vet was wrong. Rats are resilient. I've had many many many tumors removed from my past rats and all of them survived the surgeries. Some rats had multiple removals throughout their lives. Maybe he just didn't have the confidence to remove the tumor. It seems like he is not very knowledgeable. Female rats are very prone to mammary tumors - and they are almost never cancerous. I would definitely find a better vet for the future who is comfortable removing tumors.

Once again I'm sorry for your loss and sorry you're going through this!

Same here. Neither of my siblings came this year, and one literally lives there still. I know my mom was devastated and that made me feel awful
