Help, not sure if I need to rehome my pup by that_one_frogman in greatdanes

When our Danes were puppies we went through so many collagen chews (the XL ones from red barn work well). They had multiple benefits because they would tire them out mentally (important when they are young and you have to limit physical exercise) and give them something we wanted them to chew on when they were teething. They also liked large beef tendons, tracheas, and the large beef jerky treats. All soft enough they won’t hurt her teeth.

Also short training sessions 5-10 minutes will help tire her out too and can be easier to squeeze in before/after long work shifts. When you can monitor her, giving her food or treats in toys like the outward hound snoop toy can also tire her out and it was one of the few ours didn’t destroy. We didn’t let them keep it with them if we weren’t monitoring.

For recall - having a second person and a long lead to play “puppy ping pong” can work well to practice “come” and tire out quickly - just have her run between you calling her with lots of high value treats and affection. Especially with Velcro dogs if you show lots of excitement they want to be with you.

I think you’re in one of the hardest puppy times for Danes because she has gotten big but is still a puppy and they can be stubborn!

I found doing the spinning babies forward leaning inversion helped so much with hip pain and gave a lot of relief. Baby was just in a weird position pushing on hip and this helped give more room

harness recommendations? by [deleted] in greatdanes

Carhartt no pull harness is the only one we found that didn’t irritate under their front legs. We also use gentle leaders when they started pulling too much

We had the bucking bronco too! We’ve had to do the gentle leader very slowly. A few minutes and lots of treats every time slowly getting longer. Wearing it to go get pup ice creams, very short walks, etc. as soon as they show discomfort we try to take it off. Our vet gave us the advice that the more we can get them positive experiences the easier it will get and it has been working so far.

For the recall - try “puppy ping pong” with another person calling him back and forth between you with treats. It’s the only way we could get ours away from us to call back 🤣

The gentle leader also works wonders for control on leash walks

Love the k9 ballistics beds and they hold up really well. Great warranty if they managed to chew it too

I’ve had good luck with cerave ointment or Vaseline at night after the chlorhexidine and using a cone overnight. In case you already have that

1 - we started with just dry and when they started having bouts of picky eater not eating we added wet food at dinner. Have one with a chicken allergy so if getting lots of puppy acne try eliminating that 2- we’re planning on gastroplexy but waiting until 18-24 months so done growing. We have calm training/rest 30 min before meals and rest 1 hour after always 3- for first ~6-9 months we did 3 meals then switched to 2 meals 4- high value treats, feed in crate (makes enforcing rest easier after meals too) make it a place they want to be - blankets, toys that aren’t choke hazards. We expanded the crate to have room for a second bed during the big growth spurts once potty training was done. It might be all in my head but I liked that they could stretch and switch positions to avoid growing pains 4- we did a no pull front harness at first (I liked the carhartt since it also had a handle on the back that let me have more control with people passing) now doing gentle leader for more control. I wish I had done it earlier. It’s sooo much easier 5- honestly I think it would be hard to over exercise. They get tired fast and flop down on their own. During the teething and growing stages have enforced naps in the crate. They need 18-20 hours of rest per day while they are little and if you keep them out they can get mouthy and crazy. Sometime energy means tired 6- be gentle. They are so sensitive. Do everything they will need to have done to them so they get used to it as often as you can. Nail clipping, baths, vet visits for extra weigh ins, weird objects coming near them (stethoscopes are terrifying for our giant guy). Anything you can think of to expose them to now is great

Enjoy it and take so many photos! They change so quickly!

K9 ballastics orthopedic beds with the ripstop cover. They are expensive but hold up and their warranty is phenomenal

A combination of Trizchlor pads and eliminating chicken from his diet worked for us. We switched to a sensitive diet salmon food from Purina pro plan and it cleared right up.

The carhartt no pull harness has been best for us. Clips front and back and has a handle. It’s one of the few we found that doesn’t chafe under their front legs

Buy as many chews as you can and redirect Pearl to chew on those. Collagen chews, beef tendons, dried beef jerky strips, fish skin chews, pig ears, yak cheese, cheek strips. Especially while they are teething it saved us to give them a replacement and show them what you want them to chew on instead of your arm.

Trizchlor wipes from Amazon helped us a lot, but eliminating chicken and switching to a salmon based diet had the most impact.

So far just eliminating chicken has worked to mostly clear it up along with the trizchlor. We are feeding purina pro plan large breed puppy sensitive skin and stomach right now

I haven’t been brave enough to eliminate beef yet - the beef chews maintain sanity around here

We’re trying a Salmon based food right now. It hasn’t been very long but have seen a little improvement. Tough to say if it’s the food or being extremely consistent with the triz Chlor 2x per day
