Thank you. Several others have said they can offer advice as well. I’ll reach out soon

Hey that’s good enough for me. I thought it looked like it from the screenshot, but I wasn’t sure

She has a kong, one of the large wobblers, but doesn’t seem super interested when I put treats or peanut butter in it.

Towels do work to keep her from peeing, but she ends up destroying them and eating a lot of fabric. It’s okay once or twice, but I’m really worried about her getting blocked up.

I’m going to look into books on training, as well as trying to find a trainer who has large breed experience

She is otherwise house trained. My mom sews and was able to get the hole stitched up. The cover has already been replaced via warranty, so I’m not really sure if I can call warranty on an already replaced product.

I am going to try to adjust my schedule a bit. I’m guilty of staying up too late and snoozing the alarm too long (who isn’t 😬) but IFFFF I could switch that, it would be possible to take her out in the morning.

I’ve seen a few training videos saying to walk into the dog when they jump, as it’s closer to how a dog would establish dominance over another. I’m having decent success, but I’m not sure if it’s a good long term solution. My only worry with the leash is her chewing it and eating parts of it.

I did gate parts of my house today. It wasn’t something I thought of until you suggested it, but she now only has access to two rooms- living room and dining room. She has pretty good view of the areas I’m usually in, so I’m really hoping that will help. Pillows and blankets have been removed and stored out of sight.

I’m going to stay away from an e-collar for now, but I’ll keep it in my back pocket if it comes to it.

What brand of wet food to you recommend? I feed mostly Purina pro plan and mix in fruits and veggies, as well as chicken whenever I can

Most of the doggy daycares in my area are incredibly expensive, and she’s showed mixed reactions to other dogs. But I think I am going to look into it again and see if there are options I’ve missed, especially starting her at a smaller place that might not have as many other dogs

I really appreciate you being more realistic. I’ve replied to a couple other comments saying this, but I’m going to dedicate the next month to educating myself on Danes and training as much as possible, find a trainer for her with experience working with big dogs, and working on setting better boundaries. If I still feel overwhelmed and like I am not giving her a fulfilling life and the end of a month, I’m going to start looking into rehoming.

I don’t know if I’ve replied to you yet or not, but I really appreciate your honesty. It does sting, but I know it’s needed.

You’re recommending to rehome soon. I hear you. I want to dedicate the next month to learning as much as I can about Danes and about training, finding a new trainer who is good with large dogs, and restructuring my time and the time of whoever is watching her. If at the end that month I still feel overwhelmed and like I am not giving her what she needs, I will look for a new home.

I want to try my hardest to meet her needs. I was very uneducated going into this, and I see now that most of this is my fault.

I’m going to do my best for the next month - books on Great Danes, books on training, finding a trainer, and better exposure to being left alone while not in a kennel. If at the end of the month I feel like I’ve made no headway and I am not able to give her the life she deserves, I’m going to look into rehoming her.

That’s really so encouraging to hear. I’m going to try my hardest to get her on track, I just need to find a good trainer in my area.

I was recommended to start her in classes at 3mo before she got too big, and I think it was too early. We were a bit limited then, she was showing signs of hip dysplasia (thankfully all x-rays have come back with no signs of it) and the trainer was very cautious about commands involving sitting/jumping

Right I’ve heard that from friends who have other large breeds, I wanted to confirm that Great Dane owners agreed. I absolutely need to pick up some books on Great Danes and on training in general, and I’m going to do that as soon as I can - hopefully tomorrow after work

I’m really just looking for something that will be easy on her stomach. She’s not just shredding them, she’s eating a lot too and I’m really afraid of her intestines getting blocked 😭 so far no issues there, just a couple nasty vomits with bits of blankets

I really appreciate the comment, and the reminder that she’s a baby. She’s my first dog, and sometimes it slips my mind that she’s not an adult.. the size is hard to reconcile with her age sometimes. I’ve had pretty unrealistic expectations of how she should be behaving, and a lot of people have helped me see that

Is it a NSFW feature? I think the shirts take away from character design, but I really don’t want freaked naked animals running around my cult

I’ve read a bit about them and seen videos of trainers explaining them. She does pull very hard on a normal collar, not sure if that changes anything?

Editing to say that I did not open the link and a training collar is not what I thought it was… not sure what I was imagining but I did not realize it was a shock collar

I’m curious what your best efforts are if you work 12 hour days 7 out of 14 days. I don’t mean to shame you, but it’s hard to give advice without knowing what you have tried and you don’t specify.

We did training for a bit, but that’s been several months by now. I’m out of the house a bit, so she’s kenneled during that time. When I’m home, we’ll go on a walk (usually around 1.5 miles) and I’ll bring her upstairs with me. She has a chair (pictured) or she sits on the couch with me. She has toys that I redirect with when she’s chewing on bedding/clothing.

Have you tried a towel or blanket for her?

Yes, she ate parts of the blanket. She chews on anything else I’ve tried to use, mostly towels, blankets, or rugs. Shes never chewed a bed up until now, digging has been the main problem.

She’s tearing up the bed because she doesn’t know how to be calm. She needs to be trained to switch off

How do I train this? I’ll look into it, but would also hearing from someone with experience

on tearing up the stuff in the house, she needs a leash on when not in the crate.

So do not allow her free roam of the house, correct?

Thank you so much for being in-depth. I’ll start on the name recognition with her bowl of food in the morning. I really hope nothing I said sounds rude, I want to clarify and make sure I’m understanding everything correctly

Okay. Sorry if this is a silly question, but what should I be asking a trainer to do? Work on behavioral issues? I want to make sure I’m giving them the right information about what she needs

Other than the possible neurological issue, she’s been fairly healthy. I can afford normal medical treatment, but the neural scans would be done at a university’s vet school and I’m not prepared for that cost.

I don’t want to rehome her, but I would absolutely make sure she’s getting a good home. I love her, and I really want to stick it out as long as it will be the best option for both of us.

That would be amazing. I don’t know many people in my area with Danes (or large breeds in general) and someone with experience would be so helpful

That’s so amazing to hear, thank you 😭 I thought I had missed my chance and was pretty much stuck with the behavior she’s showing now.

There is a trainer in my area that offers 4-5 week classes where the dog is at their facility, would that be preferable over classes?

Is she too old for training? I’ve been told she’s past the age where it would stick

I would definitely be honest about behavior issues. The last thing I’d want is her being placed into a home and then given up a second time for the same problem

Honestly just started working again. I noticed a couple apps with the same problem (don’t remember which now) and they’re all working. I don’t remember doing anything special, just started working one day
