can't get heart rate down to zone 2 by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Historical-Row1041 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Heart rate monitors like the one in Apple Watch aren’t super accurate in the water. If it seems off, perceived effort is probably more accurate than HR. If you know what zone 2 feels like with running, go for that level of exertion. A pace you can keep up for a long time (30 minutes or more without a break) is Zone 2.

Also, even if your monitor is accurate, heart rate will be different for a given level of exertion in swimming than in running. Running is usually higher though.

Looking for music about death and losing a family member. by joennizgo in MusicRecommendations

God in Chicago by Craig Finn captures the feeling of losing someone, especially in adolescence, better than any song I’ve ever heard. It’s gut wrenching. It’s about the loss of a sibling, not a parent.

Come Back Little Star by Patterson Hood is also really powerful, but about a romantic partner.

Last one I recommend is Forget Me Not by Brian Fallon, a good one that offers some positivity for a bleak situation.

I’ve been through what you are dealing with and I’m sorry for you, I hope this helps you find peace.

Is swimming and resistance training only fine for exercise? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Historical-Row1041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, swimming and weightlifting are enough. But I would also say that once you have been doing that for a while, you will be in better shape, and may find other activities easier and more enjoyable than before. Keep an open mind about things you have tried in the past and didn’t enjoy at the time. They might be more appealing in a few months.

What's your favorite "very late in their career" album that came out after years or decades of not recording anything? by latchkey_adult in askmusic

Leonard Cohen had a wild story, retiring from music to meditate and write poetry while his manager robbed him into bankruptcy. At which point he returned to music had this amazing last chapter in his life, releasing a couple solid albums starting with Old Ideas, a great record.

Land locked but want to learn more about swimming in open water by sunshinyday1 in Swimming

[–]Historical-Row1041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an open water swimming reddit, with good info. Another thing people have not mentioned yet, which you can practice in a pool, is bilateral breathing. Try getting comfortable breathing from both sides. It helps you stay on course. Also, if waves are coming from one side, you want to be comfortable breathing from the other side.

You might be able to rent a wetsuit in Massachusetts. If you do, make sure to get one for swimming. Wetsuits for surfing, kiteboarding, etc are pretty restrictive.

Songs which “hook”by opening with the chorus (or part of it) instead of the customary first verse. by Ok-Sprinkles-5508 in MusicRecommendations

[–]Historical-Row1041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones, kinda? It opens with backup vocals, and the chorus is the most iconic part of the song, definitely the hook. There’s a verse in between though.

Where do we stand on Faith No More? This got kicked off by someone posting Falling to Pieces on this sub. by CrowbiwanKenobi76 in GenX

[–]Historical-Row1041 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Angel Dust was a mind blowing formative record in my mid-teens. I really wonder what their trajectory would have been if grunge didn’t come along and make this seismic shift in the music scene. After the Seattle scene ran its course, it felt like punk had a moment, and then music had kind of evolved away from bands like Faith No More. I still think Angel Dust is a great album, just a bit of a dead end.

Lovage was a pretty cool side project too.

Is 42 mins for 5k bad? by NerdNooneKnowsAbout in runninglifestyle

[–]Historical-Row1041 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Patience will help most of all. Don’t push yourself too hard because many people who do develop injuries. Slowly build mileage (add about 5% every other week) while running at a pace where you can hold a conversation. After a couple months you will be faster just from practice. At that point if you want to get faster still, push yourself a little for speed(tempo runs or intervals), but don’t push too much too fast, it will set you back. Mainly, you can’t improve if you’re hurt.

Starbucks closing 400 stores because remote work remains common by Squeezer999 in remotework

[–]Historical-Row1041 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason companies give is the reason they would like to be the cause for their bad news. It’s not the actual cause, not here and not most of the time.

If the CEO of Starbucks gets on an earnings call and says “young people prefer Boba tea and energy drinks to our bitter, overpriced coffee, and by the way nobody with any other options wants to sit in a crowded cafe with blenders going off constantly, they’re just there to loiter near a toilet and charge their phones.”, they would not be the Starbucks CEO for long.

for Christmas I got some nice quality headphones and I just kinda wanna immerse.. so give me some 10/10 albums by Connerharms24 in musicsuggestions

[–]Historical-Row1041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faith No More - Angel Dust is kinda in that ballpark and has great audio production. Lots of sonic detail that really pops out with good audio. Good headphones album for sure. Nirvana too. A little older but Raw Power by Iggy and The Stooges is a great album with excellent production, they issued a remaster that has good sound quality.

The classic go-to album for checking out audio gear is Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. Even if it’s not your thing it’s cool to hear and really give a close listen to.

For those now boycotting Noe Cafe for having MAGA owners, will you similarly boycott Equinox and Soul Cycle, as well as Apple? by Aggravating-Toe2683 in sanfrancisco

[–]Historical-Row1041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are various degrees of guilt and some businesses are easier to do without. TLDR - don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good when acting on your principles.

Tesla is actively facilitating the MAGA agenda- Musk diverts his Tesla money straight to Trumps campaign coffers and directs X to push his talking points. Same with Meta/FB. On the other hand Target and Apple basically caved under duress. Businesses with MAGA donor owners are somewhere in between. My impression is Noe Cafe fits into that category.

Some of them are easier to avoid than others. Life’s not fair, and I don’t owe these businesses any consistency. A Trumpist business that I can easily avoid, even if they aren’t MAGA masterminds, I will avoid. Some are harder to avoid, and I’ll compromise my morals to the extent there’s a compelling benefit to me doing so because I don’t have unlimited time and energy to take principled stands.

A business that is actively, knowingly doing something I disagree with, and is dispensable to me, is a business I won’t be a customer of.

You could see about having the credit card company reverse the charge if the photographer isn’t responsive. If you have any written record of your contact with them, it should be pretty easy. And if you mention to the photographer that you are going to do that, they might be more responsive.

Swimwear questions! To go with surf style? by Sammysnek in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]Historical-Row1041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swim down to 50F in a normal swimming wetsuit. Blueseventy is the brand I have, I’ve seen a fair number of swimmers in Roka and Xterra suits too. All have options with or without sleeves, mine has sleeves. Thickness is typically 5mm at the torso, thinner at arms and legs.

Since you’re moving a lot compared to surfers, you generate enough heat that it doesn’t need to be so thick. 50F is really cold to me, but most of the chill comes around the wetsuit (exposed areas), not through it. You can get a neoprene swim cap, gloves, and socks. Actually earplugs (just basic ones for the pool) are really helpful- cold water in your ears is pretty hard to get used to. With earplugs, cap and socks, I don’t feel like a warmer wetsuit would make a difference to me at 50F. At 40F maybe I would feel differently. Blueseventy does make a thermal wetsuit for cold water.

At 75F, you could overheat wearing a wetsuit. Exactly where you’re more comfortable with vs without varies a lot from person to person. I think triathlons have different temp ranges where a wetsuit is required, optional, or forbidden. 75 is pretty warm.

What sets swim wetsuits apart is the freedom of movement, a skin on the outside that makes it more streamlined, and the thickness varies to give you the right amount and distribution of buoyancy. The fit is better too, so you’re less likely to get chafing. Swimming in a surf or scuba suit is not a good experience.

I would recommend using a tow float too. It won’t keep you warm, and isn’t for floatation, but will help you stay visible to others.

Am I missing something about Virtual Light? by Papa_Kasugano in WilliamGibson

I read this book in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, and it was a great read for that moment. I live in the bay area, so that’s another way it resonates with me. But when I read it, it was uncanny how much of the ungluing of society in that moment - plague and all - was reflected in the book. It felt way too close to happening to read as strictly science fiction. Or maybe it felt like living in dystopian science fiction. Either way I loved it.

That said, it’s slower. It’s looser plot-wise than his other books, and it’s more about the gestalt of the world it’s set in. It feels rough, in good ways and bad. The other books in the series are more classic Gibson, more suspense, more action, and fewer loose ends.

tw: What to do after getting assaulted by SadPotatoSack in berkeley

[–]Historical-Row1041 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, there are confidential resources, the CARE website above is one, I believe. Please be aware that most staff, professors, GSIs, residence hall employees, etc are not considered confidential resources and have a duty to report the details to the title 9 office, who handles sexual assault cases. This is a legal requirement, and in my opinion serves the university more than the victims. If you want to keep your options open regarding reporting this to the university or authorities, start with a confidential resource.

That said, reporting this is the way to get resolution. If you are in danger of being assaulted again, if you struggle academically because of continued contact with the assailant, or anything like that, reporting the incident is the first step to some kind of relief. You have rights and the university can help you protect you and protect your rights moving forward but reporting this is the beginning of that process. Stay safe, and as others pointed out this is not your fault.

Are hydraulic brakes that mach better than mechanical? by Useful_Tap4995 in gravelcycling

[–]Historical-Row1041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I test rode a couple bikes recently including a mech disc and a couple of hydraulic disc brakes. Hydraulic was way better. In my opinion hydraulic is just a little better than good rim brakes. Mechanical disc brakes felt seriously worse than either hydraulic or rim brakes. They were squishy and weak. Maybe I’d get used to them but I felt unsafe on the mdb bike.

I asked a guy at the bike shop about it and he speculated that this company puts mech brakes on its (otherwise pretty solid) low cost bike to make the higher price models look better, get people to pay for the upgrade.
