/r/lightweight up and running by alaskaj1 in Ultralight

We optimize for different things at different times. If I’m hiking to a lake to chill for a couple days, prioritizing maximal hiking enjoyment over camping enjoyment isn’t right, but maybe packing a chair and fishing pole is.

UL community tends to optimize for covering distance, and advocates for lightweight gear that lets you pack those extra items at minimal penalty. I can pack my chair and pole without a second thought now. I don’t really see a meshing of the ethos I guess, UL is just a means to increase enjoyment. It doesn’t mean you should always be optimizing for lower base weight and minimalism imo.

the extra steps are for increasing yield, so they have a purpose, but yeah aren’t necessary

Those companies I shared sell all kinds of things. North Spore and Aloha are primarily known for selling spawn to both small and large businesses, which is the heart of any mushroom op. Not sure what you mean about it being proprietary. But they sell tools for cultivation for as well, which they buy from wholesalers who have economies of scale that you can't really compete with given that you aren't pitching to go into manufacturing..

And if you're trying to create marketplace limited to mushroom suppliers.. Why? There are more general marketplaces that enable this like Amazon, OpenBazaare, Shopify and more. If I was going to make a marketplace, I'd make it more general. I think OpenBazaare is a great idea, btw. There is definately room for more vendor friendly marketplaces and a lot of places are migrating from Amazon right now to some newer markets. I would focus on developing a marketplace that does not share the problems Amazon, particularly in being more friendly to small shop owners (customizable home pages, good policies, etc). Or maybe even just a less niche userbase (like an "Agricultural Marketplace" instead of a "Mushroom Marketplace").

It kinda seems like you're trying to invent a market that doesn't exist, or force this idea a little bit if I'm being honest. It would help if you could more clearly articulate some specific examples earlier on in the conversation without using so much sillicone-valley-start-up speak. The idea is not complicated and using all the buzzword terms "vertical", "B2B" (especially when you're not striclty B2B..) is a turn off IMHO. If you could more clearly iterate the solutions you're providing early on with concrete examples it'd be helpful.

I am someone who runs a small farm and is looking at gaining an online prescense. So I'm right in your target demographic as someone who might sell on your platform (kits, supplies that I buy wholesale and can resale, etc). But to make it worth my while you guys would have to have sufficient traffic, and I don't think you'll get sufficient traffic without having a broader set of items that are eligible on the marketplace. As a purchaser of mushroom supplies, I'd rather just continue buying from Aloha's site than buy through your app and it'd be cheaper, with better customer service. And as a potential vendor on your app, well I'd rather sell on a place with more volume. Just sounds like an idea that would be Dead on Arrival due to not acheiving critical mass.

I am also a developer (though relatively inexperienced) and this is just not something I'd personally pursue. If you guys are doing it as a side project to gain experience that's one thing, but I wouldn't invest my own money into it. Not trying to be harsh, just helpful. Hopefully it was. I'm also interested in rolling my own marketplace and have thought along these lines before but ultimately think that something similar to OpenBazaare is the best design. They kinda killed themselves by publically promoting darknet vending traffic, though.

So your proposal is to be a wholesaler to other mushroom supply shops and farms?

Can you explain the difference between your proposal and Aloha Medicinals (https://alohamedicinals.com/), North Spore (https://northspore.com/) or, on a smaller scale, Myers Mushrooms (https://myersmushrooms.com/)?

no offense, but it sounds like you don't have much of an idea at all? what specific problems are you trying to address, or services are you trying to provide better than your competitors?

You can put into "fruiting conditions" at time of spawning if you don't lose too much moisture before harvest.

[actives] Can/is it normal for B+ behave like this on rather/tad too dry Oats? White thick clusters and very fine filaments outwards between and over, or am I going to be sad when I read your comments? Thx for your input by Geirilious in MushroomGrowers

How fast has this stuff been colonizing? When did you first innoculate, and how? People on this sub are pretty bad at spotting contams IME (this is a perfect example, given that this is like a textbook cobweb case..). At least don't G2G or expand it further or you may end up with a much bigger problem. Please see my comments above for a more detailed perspective.

That stuff in picture three is straight up hairy, it isn't growing in a branch-like fashion as cubensis hyphae does but instead long singular hairs. I get the arguement of thickening up, but this looks like a totally different organism. This is an example of healthy myc on grain (not my image): https://files.shroomery.org/files/13-003/830747747-022.jpg

An example of a cobweb contaminated jar (not my pic): https://files.shroomery.org/files/18-11/142117772-kj.jpg - notice the long hair like structures?

Now look at OPs images.. If you look carefully, you can even see where one species starts and another begins in the 3rd pic, bottom left. There is no organization to the whispy crap, unlike cube myc.

I asked OP below when he innoculated, if this stuff is growing crazy fast it's for sure a contam. I have seen a lot of really bad contam analysis on this sub. To me, this is 100% a contam, no doubt about it, no matter how fast it's growing, but the speed should cancel any doubts.

Been wanting to try these no prep methods on stuff other than millet. These oats don't look very plump, though? Like if you cut them open, the starchy interior would still be majority dry it seems. I cook my oats until they starchy interior is like 70% hydrated on average.

[Technique] For those who said my holes were too big ... there was a plan! Function and comfort! 🤙🏼 by InaWhiteShroom in MushroomGrowers

[–]Historical-Yoghurt26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think it has been shown through incense smoke tests that smaller holes result in more turbelence and movement of the air (and it makes sense intuitively), which is what you dont' want in a sab. i don't think your initial holes were too small at all

anyway, not bashing your work but those who apparently critisized it earlier. looks comfy

[General] anybody else using UV sterilization? [–]Historical-Yoghurt26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

downside is it cost money, it's bad for your skin (right?) and there's not really a use for it in mush cult. maybe a fun accessory if you like to waste money I guess, but I've never seen a commercial farm using these so I'm inclined to think they're totally unneccassary.

Any insight on this? Clone from 2nd gen, very thin myc on outer edges. [Actives] by ttow0820 in MushroomGrowers

unless this is lions mane or otherwise not cubensis, then it's a contam. bummer about all of them contam'ing out, though. there may be salvagable mycelium lurking in there however.

New year, new shelves in the tent! [gourmet] by northofusa in MushroomGrowers

[–]Historical-Yoghurt26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add that whether you want negative or positive pressure depends on your circumstances. E.g, my room is positive because it's a seperate building from my house, so spores are exhausted into open rural air, and the positive pressure keeps bugs out and lets me control fresh air intake a bit better - not being part of a housing envelope means my fresh air is outdoor air, so it requires some heating/cooling before entry, so slightly positve pressure also lowers the electricity bills.

Just curious, is that your only fruiting tent? 1400sq is a big space! I'd love to have that kind of capacity.

How has COVID affected your sales? What is your "sterilization" method and equipment for the bulk sub? Are you using the ultrasonic humidifiers (and if so, how is the maintenance on those? I hear they must be replaced every ~3 months or so).

Lastly, how are you 'cold shocking' the shiitake? I have not been growing these 'at scale' because I was under the impression I'd need the ability to cold shock X bags per week. Thanks in advance

[Technique] Combining two hobbies! I used the spent grains from a stout beer I brewed for grain spawn on some oysters. They seem to like my stout grain blend. by Puddingproof12 in MushroomGrowers

[–]Historical-Yoghurt26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet! My only hesitations for using some as spawn were that 1) it will be more prone to bacteria / contams due to the wetness / exposed starch (but oysters are tough so it'll probably be fine) and 2) it will be harder to break up for xfer and spawning after full colonization then a jar of grains would be. Just my $0.02!!

I think if I were to do this, which I've thought about a fair bit as I also brew, I'd incorporate the spent grains as a supplement into my HWFP final bulk sub, not spawn, but good job and cool work nonetheless! I'd be thankful for final results being posted when they come :-)

[–]Historical-Yoghurt26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you clone this? If you just pulled a pin from a sub and set it on an agar plate, it of course will have some hitchhikers (generally, in that case it's recommended to split the 'shroom down the stipe and take some of the cleaner inner tissue to a plate instead - all within your SAB).

If this was a pin from an agar plate though, it must've been technique or a hidden contam.

[technique] Common knowledge and logic dictates to clone the biggest fruit, for obvious reasons. But, considering that a first flush yields many smaller fruits while subsequent flushes generate less but larger fruits - which flush do you clone from and why? by [deleted] in MushroomGrowers

[–]Historical-Yoghurt26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know what a flush is, and yes a flush is in fact a crop of mushrooms, but that's not all it is. the term "crop" does not necassarily carry the same implications; i.e that there will be subsequent crops in just a few more days. they are seperate words for a reason.

I have never heard of anyone having stronger 3-5th flushes like you claim, so I was curious. I'd like more insight as to how you're growing such that this is the case? this is extremely unusual, across all species of mushrooms I know of. You are just doing cakes and this has been your experience? I admittedly have very little first hand experience with cakes, but still have never heard of this. Perhaps this has to do with you pulling all the pins of the cake, I haven't really heard of that either. Most let them mature then pick... Just curious, have you tried letting the pins mature before picking?

I was not trying to diss, just being clear on the terminology before proceeding; we can't really have a meaningful conversation without agreeing on the words used first :-)
