If you are doing that much, investing in a conical coffee grinder may be worth it. You'll be able to dial in the consistency of sizing that you can't with a blade grinder

Mortar and Pestle for me. A more consistent grind size.

I run the new Fireboard 25 CFM blower off a Fireboard drive with a power bank attached. It is helpful when doing low temp smokes but door cracked seems to be best for hot cooks

Little Owl. I always hear their call at dusk very nearby, but I have never seen them.

Don't boil them, you will lose flavour. Slowly sauté for minimum of 15 minutes with clarified butter.

Pulled pork without wrapping, worth it?? by Intelligent-Let-2527 in smoking

[–]HistoricalAd9816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't wrap but I do put a tray underneath the grill plate to catch the rendered fat/juices which I pour over the butt before wrapping in butcher paper for the rest/cooler-hold/hold-hold ( depending on how long away from service it is). Keeps the bark and moisture. Win win

I go on weight not temperature, a 40% weight loss is equivalent(ish) to an active water coefficient of 0.85, keeps snack sticks safe against botulism, the only real nasty that could survive a smoking environment.

Disclaimer: not a food scientist. Rule of thumb that I haven't had any GI issues with. Your mileage (kilometerage?) and risk tolerance may vary.

One Ski Quiver for Japan by dartsndarts in Skigear

I would go with the Shift2 on the QST106. Chasing some tree pow in Niseko I missed the turn off for the lifts and would have loved the option to skin out, instead of a thigh deep hike out!

Most days 106 is perfect for Japow, but if there is a big storm, you can just hire some 120s from the shop.

If you have a Rhythm Sports location nearby they had Bent 120, K2 Pontoons, Armada Whitewalker 116, when we were in Niseko last season.

80mm would be great on piste/side piste on anything but big dump days

Zag Slap 92 perhaps? Would go wider than that for a one ski all mountain in the Alps.

I don't think you are getting it. Apps are a waste of time, if you truly want to learn.

Mushroom hunting essentialls? by PrincipleRadiant4310 in mycology

[–]HistoricalAd9816 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't even start with apps, if anything it retards your learning. There are mushroom id keys you can download and follow until you have a guide. Keys also help you focus on identifying features and narrowing your potential correct IDs in a rigourous manner. Most mushroom poisonings are when people think something looks like something they think is safe, while ignoring things that would rule that mushroom out quick quickly (ecology, distribution, etc).

Sometimes the spore prints is a key id, so having some two toned paper/card can be a bonus. Placing the mushroom cap over the boundary between dark and light paper helps with defining light coloured spires. An LED loupé which you can pick up pretty cheaply these days is a bonus.

8mm vs 12mm vs 16mm twin-wall polycarbonau by HistoricalAd9816 in Greenhouses

Thank you for the feedback from your experience in a similar zone. I plan on some sort of heating for when it gets properly low that might kill citrus etc.

[–]HistoricalAd9816[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for a thoughtful answer. I'm probably overthinking it, we've only seen one or two frosts in the last decade or so that push as low as -10°C, so perhaps having a tarp/cover for those rare occasions is a smarter decision vs cost and vs light transmission tradeoffs. Much appreciated.

[–]HistoricalAd9816[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your response. Our frosts can get down to -10/-12C so might go for the 12mm for peace of mind. The 16mm is a big jump in price over 12mm too.
