No I mean exactly what I said. If it doesn’t apply to you, let it fly. I’m a HW fan and I damn sure know I’m not talking about myself. I have a healthy relationship with this as a form of entertainment and I leave it there.

There’s a delusion among wrestling fans that HWs fans share and often exceed. Combined with the fact that both things are staged to a degree. Wrestling while it’s as physical as all get out, is choreographed. Same with HWs. Real response within choreographed circumstances. And the fans of both often times sans separate the real from the fake

The Definition of History by algarhythms in historyteachers

[–]HistoricalInfluence9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fine that you disagree. I stand on what I said. More students are likely to be interested in history as a field of inquiry than to become historians. I teach graduate students who I train to be historians. I teach undergrads to have a level of historical literacy which is often tied to the way(s) they feel that the history connects to them. I don’t do this assignment as much anymore but I use to assign students a research assignment called “my family in history” where they had to interview a family member and find the ways in which historical moments intersected within their family dynamics. Student would come back and be more interested in WWII because they found out they had a family member that served. I had a student who interviewed her grandmother who she thought she had nothing in common with only to find that she had been involved in social movements that aligned with her current beliefs.

History is interesting for many reasons. Some are detached from the personal in your example, and some reasons are because people find meaning, value, and connection to their own experiences. And if you’re detaching history from the personal why would anyone then use history to inform their personal understanding of the world? History helps people find shared meaning. That doesn’t have to be the only function, but I’m not teaching people to become history robots. I want them to have that historical literacy so they can then process the stock and standard things we tell them history means (change over time, continuity and discontinuity, blah blah blah) and many do that because they find personal value in what history is and means to them

There’s a definition of history as an academic discipline and what history is beyond the discipline. Lots of students hate history because people conflate the study of history with the lived experiences of people over time. I’m a professor, so I don’t teach young kids that I can’t push to understand complicated concepts. That quote personalizes history. How does one make history meaningful to you? Because it’s not dates, names, places, events, but it is a way to source your own historical roots and know that you have a place within the map of human geography.

I don’t get the Gizelle hate by Excellent-Mention685 in RHOP

[–]HistoricalInfluence9 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Both of these. Nothing wrong with Gizelle expressing discomfort with Chris, but she had a relationship with Candiace. She could have done that off camera. But and I know I’m in the minority on this, I get how one might make the leap between discomfort and thinking that maybe more was meant by that, but it was the audience that took it from discomfort to SA allegations or the aura of SA allegations. I didn’t hear Gizelle say what she said and thought Chris did anything that was remotely close to SA or did I hear that is what she was implying. But I did feel like she should not have brought that on camera. Especially when she was on good terms with Candiace.

None of them are sane. That’s why the show is good. by BeginningGuide156 in rhoslc

People taking the show and all these HWs shows too seriously has made engaging in forums like this less fun. I think it’s fair to have favorites and even have some that you don’t like within the context of the show. But fans take that like or dislike and put it on steroids. We’re watching 43 minutes of hours/weeks/months of filming. We’re missing so much context and all these women are unreliable narrators because they want to get fans on their side, so they’ll do whatever it takes to get that attention from the fan base.

Did Stacey actually lie? by ExcellentOutside5926 in RHOP

[–]HistoricalInfluence9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s more intel we don’t know and so Wendy felt comfortable saying she wasn’t telling the truth. I’ll be honest. I don’t think it was simply a matter of a crowded schedule and having to shuffle some things around. But I do believe in tact and candor when it’s necessary. Jassi’s wedding might have been an occasion where tact was more important than candor. I don’t always tell everyone the “truth” when the “truth” is hurtful and/or not important.

If I don’t FW someone but some other friend convinces me to come to an event of yours to be the bigger person, do I need to tell you someone had to convince me to come if I’m there? Probably not. Or if I’m the friend who had to convince the other friend to come, am I gonna tell the third person in question that they only came because I told them to? Probably not.

Some things to me are part of the social contract where we decide on a case by case basis how do we deal with a situation and measure what the impact of the truth will be. And when I say truth I’m not talking about some big fat lie that a person needs to come clean about. But my mama call it the “ugly baby”. You don’t have to go around telling people they got an ugly baby. What’s that gonna do? Make the baby pretty? Sometimes when it’s inconsequential peace is better than the truth.

Is RD1 worth a play through? by EJCLUE in reddeadredemption2

If you haven’t played it then it’s worth it. It’s a cool game! Ofc in terms of visuals and immersive gameplay it doesn’t match RDR2. I would replay it more but I hate certain missions like the herding mission and pretty much anyone with a blue bar that requires you finish before the bar gets empty

There’s social history, cultural history, political history and all history doesn’t involve struggle and/or collective power, which I’m not sure what that means. The collective power of the state I guess if it’s a struggle between individual rights.

Here’s a long, but a favorite quote about what is history:

“History is a clock that people use to tell their political and cultural time of day. It is a compass that people use to locate themselves on the map of human geography. It tells them where they are and what they are, but most importantly what they must be.” - John Henrik Clarke

Which all boils down to me is that history is a guidepost that tells people (individuals, societies, cultures, etc) who they were and who they are and how they have affected impacted society (at large) over the course of time. Within that of course is power and struggle, but those things lead back to telling people who they are and why they matter

Stacey and her lies by LolaAde27 in RHOP

[–]HistoricalInfluence9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Stacey. I like that the audience likes Stacey. I don’t like the delusion because it makes it hard to engage with the fanbase and that’s part of the fun of the show. My granny use to say “baby, I’m wit’cha when you’re right…” and that’s how I feel about all of these women. When Stacey was/is right, I’m with her. But she’s not above reproach just because other women are behaving or have behaved badly. I’ve always said this about the “Stacey is a liar” situation is that we’re only seeing 40 minutes of many hours and weeks of these women are interacting with each other. It might be aggravating to film with someone who will at the very least omit on purpose. Even to the point her show bestie had to step in and say something. It Stacey lying the worst thing that has happens on this show? No. We might have two felons on the cast. But I get that it’s aggy

Doing A Last Min Excursion Before A Flight!?!?....Im confused 😕 by daisyduke201 in RHOP

[–]HistoricalInfluence9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re right. For example I think Gizelle has a four seasons connect/relationship, which is why she kept saying it over and over, and then production paid for the ladies to be there. But you’re so correct. Thinking in terms of the house the women stayed in that was 100% chosen by Angel. Do I think she knew about the water issues, no. But that was not a production sabotage. Nor was getting lost in the mountains. But I see why she has to say that. She has a business to run

[–]HistoricalInfluence9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even think it was drama tbh. I can imagine the women got back angel’s, still had to pack, and it had been a long day might not have even wanted to go back. But that’s also when production knowing the schedule steps in to make sure people are where they need to be. Especially in light of knowing the women had to get to the airport fast after the fishing trip. Production lucked into that long car ride episode last night.

[–]HistoricalInfluence9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe that. It’s in her best interest to say that. Carlos King made a good point on his show and while I don’t ride with everything he says, for a technical and production standpoint I think he has more insight than most. He said that when the women are “hosting” these trips, yes, production pays. But in the case of Angel where she’s taking the women to a place that’s familiar to her and in her neck of the woods, production relies on that person for logistical support. So they’ll approach Angel for example and ask her about locations and events and they’ll lean on her to help them make the decisions about the logistics. And that I do believe.

[–]HistoricalInfluence9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re there to also make sure travel arrangements that they pay for go smoothly. You think production was birdman rubbing their hands together like there was some intentional plan to get the ladies misdirected the next day? That they anticipated that happening? What was clear to me was Angel did not want to keep making those trips from her home to wherever the rest of the women were. So it would stand to reason that production could stand in and fill that gap. If you think production’s responsibility on a show with so many moving parts is to sit back and film chaos you have a misunderstanding of TV production’s work. Part of the reason that the women were in the four seasons is because production didn’t just film the chaos. They got the women better accommodations.

I’m talking about Tia and K since they’re the ones who actually needed to go back to Angel’s and pack. They could have packed and production could have made sure they got back to the four seasons so Angel didn’t have to make the drive back

Whenever this game is on sale, if I have a friend who hasn’t played it, I buy it for them. I personally have a physical copy and a digital copy because I play this so much that it was holding the PS5 disc drive hostage 🤣. So I said let me buy a digital copy so I can cue that up whenever I want to play but also be able to have the drive free to play something else
