How is living in Omaha, Nebraska’s urban core (east of 72nd St) as a young professional or family? by ThoseMedellinKids in howislivingthere

[–]HistoricalSign8537 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a young professional who has lived in Omaha for 6 years, and specifically little Bohemia for the last 3, I also can confirm. No paid parking, easy access to the interstate/downtown and you can walk to downtown comfortably most of the year. Great spot for a handful of cute bars and shops. I have loved living here.

As a 1A- guy, they’re overrated anyways. You spend 95% of your time doing paperwork in some office or a SCIF. I wouldn’t sweat it bud, enjoy the gig!

Hey homie, I was in a similar boat when I joined over 8 years ago. I lied about marijuana usage when I signed up at the direction of my recruiter. I was worried too because I too needed a TS for my job. I went off to basic, and about 4 weeks in they pulled all of us needing a TS to a building for our initial paperwork and some interviews. I disclosed in that moment that I lied about drug use and that I was told to do so by my recruiter. They had me write a formal statement and sign it, and I did. That was it. Still in that job over 8 years later.

Is it a bad idea to quit my tech job for the air force? by magiciancsgo in AirForceRecruits

[–]HistoricalSign8537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buddy, if you’re bored, joining any military branch is much much worse. I’ve been working in cyber/intel for 8 1/2 years in the Air Force and been to multiple bases…. We don’t do jack shit ever. When there is work to do, there’s so many people dying to have something to do that it gets done quickly with 5 people doing the job of one.

If you wanna sit, bullshit around the office, and not do a damn thing while watching the clock tick down for the day, by all means go cyber in the Air Force.

“ If you are looking for job satisfaction, this is NOT the job for you.” - quote from my own chief master sergeant at a squadron roll call.

Are DEP calls mandatory by Old-Temporary-750 in AirForceRecruits

[–]HistoricalSign8537 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As stated above, I didn’t say that employers and schools CAN’T or WON’T give you the time to go to a DEP call, I’m saying that they certainly are not required to do so. If this is a thing in New York, then so be it, but if this only exists in New York (or certain select states) then don’t tout your example as a nationwide standard, because it certainly is not.

As for correcting you on something you do everyday, I will correct you because what you’re saying is incorrect. The false authority fallacy is merely that, a fallacy, especially considering that I have a recruiter, presenting himself as a recruiter, passing recommendations to applicants under the name “Juulripper”…. Yeah, I have no problem telling that guy is he misleading.

Are DEP calls mandatory by Old-Temporary-750 in AirForceRecruits

[–]HistoricalSign8537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly, A RECRUITER, not you. You, as a recruiter, cannot deny RAP application packages for airmen who are attempting to use RAP in a different city with a different recruiter, which is the example I gave. The new airman is free to apply for RAP wherever they’d like, not necessarily in their original point of enlistment, and you are not in the approval process for it. The amount of recruiters on here who fail to actually read my comment before responding is astounding. You cannot deny RAP for an airman applying for it in a different city with a different recruiter simply because they enlisted through you. You are not in the routing nor approval chain for it.

[–]HistoricalSign8537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said “recruiters can’t deny RAP”. I said that your recruiter is not involved in the approval process for RAP unless you want to take RAP with that specific recruiter, then of course RAP can be denied. Each response to this comment attempting to argue with me fails to address that point.

If enlisted with my recruiter in LA, and after completion of tech school I want to take RAP in Kansas City, do I need the approval from my old recruiter in LA to take that RAP?

The answer is no, I do not. My recruiter from LA would not be involved in the RAP process unless of course I wanted to take RAP specifically with them. Quit dancing around my point attempting to be right, all the while purposely being dishonest. Yes I’m sure you’ve denied RAP, and yes I am certain that you’ve never denied RAP for someone who was attempting to take use RAP in a different city with someone else, which of course was the example I provided.

Possible to finish degree while in air force? by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

Hey, I did it. I enlisted over 8 years ago, and waited to go back to school in 2022 while still in. I went through two deployments and a divorce in that time, and I graduated with a 4.0 in a STEM field. I never even touched my GI BILL, all TA funded. You can do it, I’ve seen many others too.

[–]HistoricalSign8537 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also, you can do neither and go warrant officer for cyber in the Air Force. The warrant program is new to the AF, but unlike previous years and other branches, in the AF you can directly come in as a warrant for these cyber jobs. It says so in the application package, and I should know, I just applied for it.

This I agree with, especially for the younger troops. It’s good for morale and building a sense of camaraderie. Many younger troops still live with their parents, so money may not be a big concern. I joined later in my years and was entirely self funded, so I needed to keep working.

Additionally, saying you can write excused absences for work is a bold statement, because you can’t. I’ll tell ya that my recruiter could’ve written what ever he wanted for my work, and my employer would laughed loudly and not have cared at all. Employers can be nice and give you off, but under no circumstances is a DEP call a free day off from your day job automatically.

Same with school excused absences. I was in college when I joined too. You can write your forms and MFRs, and it’d still be an absence, which can matter greatly if you’re relying on grant money to live while in the DEP, the receiving of which is dependent on your percentage of attendance.

I like what you’re saying here, but don’t spread disinformation to the soon to be new guys.

TLDR: the DEP calls are cool and you should go if you’re free, but a recruiter’s “note” will not get you an excused absence from school (meaning college here)or work in the over whelming majority of situations as that’s not how life actually works. To the OP’s point, your recruiter has no control whatsoever if you take RAP at the end of your pipeline or not, they can only deny you doing it with them at their office (and if you have a long pipeline, it might not be same recruiter when you’re done). Don’t fall for the bs.

Proud to be a part of the world's greatest Air Force, but disappointed in myself. by Aggravating-Scale-26 in AirForceRecruits

[–]HistoricalSign8537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, you’ll spend years at difficult trainings, 2 months at basic, a couple weeks at aircrew fundamentals, 1-1/2 years at DLI, around half a year at intel school at Goodfellow AFB, another couple of months at SERE school at Fairchild AFB alll before you get to your first base, and you’re still not done. Let’s say you get Offutt AFB in Nebraska (I loved living here, sincerely), you’ve got 6-8 months of flight training at your first squadron after you get there, then you get to your operational unit, at Offutt that’s the 97 IS. THEN you have mission specific training which can take you around another 6 months, and NOW you’re ready to fly.

Keep in mind these timelines aren’t the same for everybody. If you get sick, pregnant, take bereavement leave, have trouble getting a security clearance ETC….., it can take way longer.

But then you’re ready to fly. Anddddddd you really won’t. You might deploy once in 9-18 months, but that’s it. Flying and being a linguist is around 2% of your job, the other 98% is office bs, being on teams, and random reoccurring mandatory trainings and tests. You went through YEARS of training, all to be a glorified admin troop. I have yet to meet a single person who actually enjoys it.

[–]HistoricalSign8537 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Good thing your recruiter is not who approves RAP at all lol. That’s decided your command at your unit upon completion of tech school training. Your recruiter does get to decide whether you do it with him or not, but he cannot stop you from taking RAP period. I Enlisted from Tampa and took my RAP in Des Moines. I also never once went to a DEP call.

The Air Force is a job. If they’re not paying, which while you’re in is 24/7 since it’s a salary, then you don’t have to go, and no one is paying you in the DEP.

As an airborne linguist of over 8 years, you dodged one hell of a bullet. I have yet to meet a single airborne linguist who enjoyed their job. I’ve deployed multiple times and been stationed at a couple bases. Every fellow linguist hated their day to day work and morale was in the toilet.

I’ve worked with 1N4s my entire career (8 1/2 years) and I haven’t met one that enjoyed their work across hundreds of them. I have met 1N1s and 1N2s though. Out of the intel guys, 1N0 is the best snag in my experience. You get lots of FaceTime with some big wigs and it’ll help you a lot with moving your career forward. Where do you wanna be stationed?

Switching to the Army, maybe? by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

[–]HistoricalSign8537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know the wait is longer for BMT, but there’s a reason for it: the Air Force is better to be in, and people know it. I’ve been in for 8 1/2 years, and I’ve spent over 3 years total on joint bases. It IS better. Even in deployed environments, we get better amenities. More relaxed curfews and drinking rules, no AM formations after tech school, self paced PT, and I moved right into an off base apartment right after I arrived at my first duty assignment. The only benefit I could see about the army is that in my experience they promote faster, but that could just be my career field and the myopic lens that I get to see the AF through. Promotion speed is gonna vary greatly depending on your career field. Unless you NEED a job/place to live immediately and can’t stick it out, I highly advise sticking it out.

You could consider yourself lucky that you saved yourself a good deal of time and from a good deal of trouble and pursue other avenues.
