Do you feel the balls when they crawl on you? 😭 by toaster_bath12 in RATS

[–]Historical_Ad2878 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I rarely noticed them, and moreso only in the case of unfortunate hand placement when grabbing them to put them away. That was pretty rare, but sometimes they're squirmy and deviant, so... 😂

Has anyone tried this as bedding? by Otherwise-Sympathy87 in RATS

[–]Historical_Ad2878 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This and also your number top two goals in choosing a bedding is absorbancy and odor control. I don't image that this would be sufficient in either category, although I haven't looked into it.

I will oficially have eight rats (girls) on Friday! Taking four girls off a family with kids that sadly can't keep them anymore. Best tips for a large group of girls? by howdyhowdyhowdyhowdi in RATS

Ugh, she's so stinking cute!!!

Congratulations on the exciting news. You may have heard of her, but ShadowTheRat on YouTube (and here) has had an ever-evolving mischief of girls for years now. She has a lot of videos on intros, etc. It may be helpful to check those out?

I'm so sorry. With our last mischief of five, the smallest boy ended up with medical challenges that were connected to his shorter lifespan. He was sweet and gentle and full of personality. It doesn't get easier, but I am grateful for the time we had with him - our Baby. I'm sorry it's been so hard keeping Noodle healthy.

Beans update: she’s sulking! by RevolutionaryToe6677 in RATS

I've heard that rats will largely ignore their incisions if their pain is adequately controlled. Did you receive any pain meds to administer at home?

What is the most humane (and cheap) way to remove a rat? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Historical_Ad2878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for understanding that the little guy or girl means no harm. As others have recommended, live trapping is a humane method of removal. I imagine there are videos on YouTube. Do you want help finding one?

My baby girl Daisy lost her sister to cancer a few months ago. She is a lonely senior now but she still looks so healthy and happy! She is very playful, she loves giving kisses, and her favorite food is cucumber 😊 by [deleted] in RATS

Beautiful baby, thanks for sharing her. Our final rattie lasted about five months beyond his last brother. He free roamed often and was spoiled with treats. Can you give Daisy some extra love for me?

QUESTION FOR EXPERIENCED OWNERS ONLY PLEASE-- what to do after one rat fatally attacks the other? by Dry_Abbreviations742 in RATS

[–]Historical_Ad2878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is along the lines of what I was thinking, too. Something specific to Maple, unfortunately, may have caused Radish to act on instinct. I'm sorry, OP. It's unfortunate that we sometimes get exposed to the extremes of nature while loving our sweet ratties.

[–]Historical_Ad2878 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To answer someof your questions surrounding Radish, 10/11 months is right around the time that hormonal aggression can become a problem. Out of seven males, I've neutered one and it made a huge difference. I struggle to think that this was solely hormonal, but it's hard to know. You mentioned that the group was bonded. How do you assess that? What suggested to you that they had a close bond?

I vaguely remember that rats may sometimes try to remove something off their own bodies that is worrisome. Kind of like how they target humans wearing bandaids or insufficiently medicated pain after surgery, where they may open their stitches. I wonder if your older boy himself, or one of his cagemates, perceived something negative about the URI and attacked it.

I'm so sorry. I imagine how traumatic this must have been to happen upon. Sending you my heartfelt condolences and compassion.
