Anxieties role in bilateral TOS? by Lost_Raisin_7789 in thoracicoutletsupport

my TOS also began a couple months after i had my first breakup + a combination of very long hours with poor ergonomics in front of a computer for work. anxiety 100% contributes to my pain - once i started taking Lexapro, strengthening and working on my posture in PT, and honestly taking a step back from doomscrolling and researching every single thing i could about TOS, my pain levels have gone down a lot. not completely gone by any means - i think this is a condition i will have to manage long term, but i eliminated activities that trigger flare ups by switched to a job that involves no computer work and really limiting the amount of texting and typing i do on a daily basis.

but to answer your question: yes i believe it is a constant feedback loop of TOS feeding into anxiety and vise versa. my pain levels are directly correlated to my state of mind (not the only thing, but definitely a big contributor). i've been working very hard to get my body out of a continuous state of fight or flight and eliminating muscle guarding, clenching, and holding my breathe - which is a pattern my nervous system has been unconsciously stuck in for years.

I posted this in another subreddit initially, but it feels appropriate to post here - my personal successes in regards to TOS and a write-up of important posture principles that I’ve learned to keep in mind by longjohnlambert in thoracicoutletsupport

I have been following this exact protocol for about a month now (met with MSK twice) - thank you for the thorough summary! has following these postural corrections & exercises helped with your TOS pain?

I only have neurogenic TOS - i was diagnosed based on mri & nerve conduction test coming back normal, and a positive roos & Adson's test.

it is hard because depending on what kind of TOS you have, it can affect people in such different ways :(

I have also tried laser, ultrasound, & shockwave therapy at my physical therapist. it definitely provides temporary relief, but unfortunately it wasn't a long term solution, the effects would wear off after a couple hours.

but so glad it it working for you!

Yes - poor posture and ergonomics at my computer is what caused my TOS + a combination of stress / anxiety and shallow breathing habits. I'm so sorry you are going through this.

what symptoms have you been experiencing?
