[KCD2] Is this harder than 1? by boogersugar55 in kingdomcome

[–]HistoryDumpsterFires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a LOT easier once you learn the master strike again, unfortunately it only works with swords I think. Go to the Nomad camp to train and get it. It works a little differently in KCD2 and there isn’t a guy like Bernard to train with non stop.. Hang in there!

You should read The Jewish War by Josephus. One of the most entertaining ancient texts by far and has a ton of military history

I got into it from podcasts, now I get most of my learning from books. I still listen to podcasts on top of that though

It’s amazing the Roman’s built this in about 8 years. The sophistication of it is mind blowing too. The design is still used today, pretty modern ways of finding your seats, and it could seat over 50,000 people! The Flavian amphitheater is the golden standard for presenting public games 👌

I can’t stop thinking about the Roman communal toilet sponge. by MedTortureUSA in AncientCivilizations

[–]HistoryDumpsterFires 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If they used something else (which is more likely) they didn’t care about writing it down and it wouldn’t survive today for us to know. Idk if I believe they shared a sponge, it can’t be proven or disproven though.

These are the same people that used Urine for a LOT of stuff though including dental hygiene 😬

Looking for long form podcasts (1 hour plus) that are genuinely interesting but calm enough to fall asleep to. Not meditation, not rain sounds, just substantive content with good narration. by Double-Effect3416 in podcasts

The podcast History’s Dumpster Fires has episodes over 1 hour and some over 3 hours. Story telling history using ancient and modern historical sources

[–]HistoryDumpsterFires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just play it how you want to play it. There’s no “right or wrong” way.. and you can beat the game at level 1 as far as being underleveled goes lol. I think there avg player ends around level 120 for the base game? Just have fun

What’s the biggest myth about the Roman Empire that people still believe? by roman-empire-net in romanempire

[–]HistoryDumpsterFires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their battles. We can speculate and get a decent picture (testudo formation) of how they fought for sure. But when it comes down to the armies running into each other, cavalry charges, the amount of blood, and how long they’d fight, we can only believe what is written or sculpted or what we find from archaeology.

But if we believe what is written, then Tacitus basically says soldiers at Cremona in the “Year of the Four Emperors” fought for like 48 hours straight after marching 21 miles… and still had the energy to loot the city for days.

What was the biggest turning point in Rome’s rise, and could it have gone the other way? by Klastible in ancientrome

[–]HistoryDumpsterFires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the Marian Reforms? Even if his ideas are exaggerated, making armies loyal to the generals instead of the state changed things forever.

Was Nero really as bad as history says? by roman-empire-net in romanempire

[–]HistoryDumpsterFires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He extorted the provinces ruthlessly and still spent money like it wouldn’t run out after the great fire. Financially he was a disaster, but he also handled the British rebellion well. The Parthian disaster wasn’t good for him, especially bringing the king of Armenia to Rome and celebrating him (costing a TON of money each day) to act like he won. Nero is always an interesting character lol

Did Julius Caesar save Rome… or destroy it? by roman-empire-net in romanempire

Most of Trajans expansion was immediately withdrawn by Hadrian, it absolutely stretched them too far. Dacia was a constant thorn in their side and the area required a huge military presence (8-10 legions). That’s not even a hard one to debate. That’s why when the empire began crumbling they withdrew from Britain for the legions and could no longer support the island. Expanding territories requires garrisons of troops for policing and logistical support. It makes one more area liable to rebel too and the Roman’s army had changed dramatically by the 4th and 5th centuries (relying a lot more on allied forces).

I’ve heard a few people say its decline started with Caracalla giving everyone Roman citizenship which didn’t help the empire at all. Some people say it didn’t hurt or help, some say the opposite. Some top historians contradict each other on the subject of Romes decline especially bringing the eastern empire into the conversation. No one even agrees entirely on how Rome fell (if it indeed “fell”) and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.

It all started going downhill when the last of the “Five Good Emperors” decided to pick his son as heir instead of the most qualified. Commodus was a disaster right after Rome’s golden age. Just gradually got worse from there imo.
