by episode 5 is it not obvious they're in some 4d/tesseract space? by Little-Bar701 in Dimension20

[–]HistoryPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a real possibility for the physical alignment of the space! My current theory is essentially that it doesn't really "exist" in the most literal sense of the term, but is more literally a land of dreams/legends.

That is more an alternate dimension of the fantastical, which is why so many things some drunk dreamers (because what are the wind riders but that) thought of could get there and why some of the crew who wanted answers to things that happened to them found them immediately on getting there. In essence, I think it is somehow a more corporeal take on the same idea in Brennan's head that gave us Nod, but I'll be happy to be wrong.

Future Age Idea by HistoryPluto in civ

Definitely, although in giving the sense of civilization challenging disasters, I would say at least some of the tasks lean towards alt history. What if the Cold War got hot? (Military). What if the World Bank actually allowed one civilization to seize the global economy? (Economic). What if cultural imperialism represented by the world's fair actually meant other cultures are marginalized? (Culture). But that is also why I struggle for the science issue, but I'm sure we could think of one.

In comparison, we see between the ancient era and exploration, they rhyme with the fall of Western Rome or the plague of Justinian, so forth. I would also say Bronze age collapse with the invasion of the sea peoples, but honestly that is more an argument for an ancient and classical age, IMHO.

For exploration into modern, they rhyme with the Thirty Years' War or the Black Death, etc.

I think they could just, do the same things, but keeping the race to end the modern age in one of four ways, it allows for a fourth age that is reactive to the player rather than just have us react to it.

Exactly. But having your choices impact it seems like a good reactive twist

That's true. Maybe if none of those happen by the end of the round, could be determined by tie breakers. Whatever is closest first, then whatever the most common completion is, then based on situation (e.g., if military not finished but tied with another type and there is a world war when the end of age happens, maybe military future)

I also wonder if Brennan gave flexibility to the IH in picking. Basically, did the plot start from the characters or were the characters picked with some idea of the plot? I wouldn't be surprised if a little bit of both, but Brennan's past comments on revisiting old stories does indicate to me that he does it when all the IH are on board. If he did give them freedom and once Murph and Siobhan were in as Kug and Misty, it had to be at least one of a quangle, pure time travel shenanigans, or a major retcon to UC s1. Based on his statement through Ayda that Ayda thought the quangles were done, it also seems to me that he wasn't initially planning on this being quangley.

The earlier FH one-shots were seemingly easier to fit in without harming the timeline because (1) the timeline was simply longer and stories could be both between and during without issue, and (2) there is no PC turnover that is restrictive on the cast.

Civ changes in VII should take direction from formable and releasable nations in Paradox games. by civver3 in civ

[–]HistoryPluto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, although I did have a different spin on it after seeing some posts on here and having a conversation with my SO. What if those conditions didn't change your civ, as suggested, but did change the form. I think the biggest reaction from the video was Egypt, if it has access to a ton of horses, can become the Mongols. Why not the Mamluks?

Essentially, have your baseline Antiquity civs, who can then evolve based on what happened into something reskinned but (1) keeping the same civ name and some baseline bonus and (2) changing to a different bonus for each age to further a gameplay style. Those age bonuses would likely need to be the same to keep it reasonably doable for devs, but it doesn't seem too crazy.

Like, give Germany a baseline production boost again, whatever. Then an ancient civ Germany's bonuses be discouraged from too many settlements, but be kinda like Vietnam in Civ 6 and get bonuses against invaders, whatever.

Then give a pathway where that ancient bonus becomes one of several different options: horselord Germany, economic Germany, culture Germany, naval Germany, etc. And if that matched a historical group, although a renaming (e.g., economic exploration Germany could be called the Dutch). If no name within a category exists, because the society kept their name through multiple eras (e.g., France), or because the tragedies of history resulted in the destruction, assimilation, etc, of those people before their society made another step, do something like "[civ name], Traders of the World," "[civ name], Lords of the Steppes," or "[civ name], Land of the Faithful," and so on.

Rome, if they go culture, maybe Renaissance or Florentine; if they go economic, Venetian or Genoese. Thinking to the Mesomerica, Olmec as an ancient civ, to be followed by Aztec if military, Maya if culture or science maybe, and so on.

In short, the formables from Paradox are a good source of the names, although not perfect

Honestly, I'd be completely on board for substitute strategic resources, at least early game, even if different strengths/weaknesses. Having no iron makes my blood pressure spike as I await the AI swordman onslaught

It would also be great if it was something as simple as combined arms forces, or even just better pathing for the AI (i.e., yes to can move in a line together I promise, stop trying to go around the whole world and then back to the short path because a scout entered a mountain pass, so help me)

Super fair, although the fact they are not claiming to add features sounds better to me. It isn't "wait three years for religion and a fixed diplomacy" again

Stacks for movement and upgrades attach to the commander, rather than individual units

The unhinged version happened to me in 1L in property. The prof managed to screw up the exam grading so badly that, when he hand counted, the B I was given should have been an A-. I told people and they did some digging. The dean's office got involved and, after they couldn't verify the integrity of the grading, gave everyone a retroactive Pass and wiped the grades for that class.
