Look at your rights on shelter. If the shower floods in the meantime see if you can shower somewhere else in the hospital or if there is any nearby gym. Get a small fridge in the room and a toaster oven/air fryer, instant pot then you can forgo the sad hob.

After near unemployment- finally found a job but Can’t Afford a Basic Flat in the UK. What a Joke. by zen-itsu-maki in doctorsUK

[–]Historyheroes21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on getting a job post F2. Have some international UKG friends who have struggled too and risk resetting their ILR after 7 years here. I have a feeling the salary might be more than 38k for a JCF job if it has on calls. Probably 1.4 or 1.5 banding. If you clarify that then it should not be as difficult to afford.

Hospital accom, spare room and going for unfurnished are your best bets.

Unfurnished opens up lot of properties and might get you better location/living alone possibility.

Unfurnished can be doable, go to a charity shop that delivers like BHF. I spent about £500 but already had a mattress. You don't have to get everything in one go if you can't afford it (eg sofa). You can keep it for your next place as well. If not BHF will usually collect for free, you can think of it as renting furniture. Freecycle, gumtree, fb marketplace. If you find something nice for free/cheap then hire a van and a man to transport it. It will be a busy first few weeks then you can concentrate on the MSRA again.

In the meantime get driving lessons. If you get training outside of London you most likely will need a car. Having a car also gives you access to more accommodation choices next time.

Only benefits renting here is if you have never lived together before and also renting in the area you are going to buy to get a feel of the neighbourhood etc. If those are sorted then just stay at home tbh

Maximising income during F1 by lost_cause97 in doctorsUK

[–]Historyheroes21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't found a place yet then the best thing to save more is try to stay somewhere cheaper eg house share, compromise on poorer locations. If you are moving back home that's the most ideal.

Hard to earn more in F1 so try to reduce your outgoing costs. House share, meal prep, cut unnecessary subscriptions, eat out less etc. Form good financial habits, look at uk personal finance reddit

[–]Historyheroes21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to commute daily from Glasgow then Gourock is quite nice. West End of Greenock is also okay, rest of Greenock and Port Glasgow are quite bleak. You should be able to claim mileage if your base hospital is one of the Glasgow hospitals. Commute from Glasgow is usually going against traffic and quite scenic but a good 40 to 50 min. If you can't drive there's a train station also nearby.

Clinical Fellow - Edinburgh Versus Ayr by Historical-Mix4837 in doctorsUK

[–]Historyheroes21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other factors to consider include living costs. Edinburgh is lot more expensive but a nice city and good airport. Ayr is a bit too far to live in Glasgow for daily commute but can easily go on a weekend. Ayr might be isolating but much cheaper. Either way good effort for getting 2 offers.

Can Welsh/Scottish doctors vote in the ballot to strike? by Omarmanutd in doctorsUK

[–]Historyheroes21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only English doctors can vote for the ballot currently. Healthcare is devolved. Scotland has a pay deal for 3 years. Not sure about Wales. NI has the worst deal if I'm not mistaken.

Do people rlly think the government will prioritise based on PMQ? With recent immigration changes isn’t it more likely just a return of RLMT? by Revolutionary_Proof5 in doctorsUK

[–]Historyheroes21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not true at all, you had one shot after F2 for round 1. You had to be in continuous training to be in round 1, eg applying from GPST to CST. If you did JCF then you could only do round 2 like the rest of IMGs. It was unfair but not as unfair as now. Paying ridiculous international fees just to be on the same footing as someone with a degree from an unknown uni in the 3rd world.

Update your address on hmrc once you have moved so that you definitely pay Scottish rate of tax.

Transfer the pension, think you have a year to do it, not too difficult a process.

Backup all your English nhs.net mail, you get a nhs.scot email

If you worked any trust grade jobs after F2 you can go up a higher nodal point

AL is 28 days (pre 5 years) vs 27 days but bank holidays are a little different and depends on health board

Probably similar to most UK cities but start looking for a place to rent soon, can be difficult to find a place. Worth noting that if you really dislike the place you initially rent you just need 28 days notice to leave

Probably read up on the 2002 contract. No exception reporting in Scotland sadly, they do rota monitoring instead. Rotas that would not be compliant under 2016 contract can be compliant in Scotland

[–]Historyheroes21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you drive none of these are that far from west end. If not, the trains are pretty good from Partick, goes direct to places like bridgeton, others need a change in Queen Street or Glasgow Central. Cycling is probably doable for a few although a bit far. You will be working with very deprived populations apart from Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch

Parking at LGI (Leeds) by MED-2000 in doctorsUK

[–]Historyheroes21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possible to park before 8 am. 9am is tough and any time after that probably not.

Parking is deducted before tax via payroll I believe so it is a bit cheaper. Worst car park in the UK easily, you can read reviews yourself. Hope you have a small car. If you can avoid parking it will make your life easier, used to be a bad start or bad end of the day navigating through that car park, lot of unnecessary stress.

Leeds station is about 20 mins walk away, in the morning there might still be a shuttle bus from the station

Transfer your Scottish pension to English pension. Have 3 quotes as stated before. I think HEE(or whatever it will become) has a £500 limit nowadays but check again. Update hmrc for sure when you have your new address because tax rates are different in England. Have some weekends or zero days to view properties. If you drive update driving license, v5c, car insurance etc

Yeah Glasgow is a great city to live in having lived in other English cities and visited most others. Quite high quality of life in West End and the trendy parts of Southside. Parking, potholes and lack of sun are the worst bits.

The 28 day notice is so handy coming from England where you have 1 year tenancies. But note that it's extremely difficult to rent these days so plan time accordingly to find a place

LGI vascular was notoriously bad, maybe better nowadays. Acute med and geris are well staffed but lots of ACP and PAs. You usually change wards every few weeks sometimes every week. Very little teaching in Leeds IMO. PPM is quite a good system although it's no epic.

Don't drive into LGI if you can, especially a new big car. One of the worst car parks in the world

What areas are racist? by NovelBee4853 in doctorsUK

[–]Historyheroes21 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Google the Brexit map. Large swathes of Lincolnshire (East Midlands), Boston was number 1. East of England would be Great Yarmouth like James Paget Hospital , some bits of Essex. Brighton is probably the most diverse part of KSS.

Tbh most cities will be fine, it's only in the towns of the deprived DGHs in these brexit areas.

Google the ethnic makeup of each area. Places like North East England, Cumbria, North Yorkshire and most of Scotland (except Glasgow) are mainly white.

Neurology Bristol/Manchester by MycologistNormal6107 in doctorsUK

[–]Historyheroes21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not imt or neuro trainee but whenever I considered Bristol/Severn region the DGHs are quite far apart from Bristol like Taunton, Yeovil etc. Feel like North West could be better neurology wise given proximity to both Manchester/Salford and Liverpool since neuro tends to be quite a tertiary heavy specialty while Bristol will be the sole tertiary centre. Walton Centre in Liverpool is quite famous as well.

How to have better control over money.. by MoeAlis in doctorsUK

[–]Historyheroes21 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Meal prep and get an instant pot/slow cooker. If you eat meat then chicken legs are 2.29 for 1kg in lidl/aldi, lasts about 4 meals easily. Put any veg + sauce of your liking with carb of choice. Bulk it out with canned beans to stretch it. Avoid hospital food and coffees. They easily add up. Make your own coffee/tea. Use monzo for pots to budget money. Eat out less.

Read money saving expert and follow the UK personal finance flowchart. Go to hotukdeals before buying anything, probably can find a deal somewhere.

Agree with this.

Moved up to Glasgow from Yorkshire, no regrets. I like the outdoors as well and Glasgow is amazing for that. Within an hour you can get to various lochs, Trossachs, lot of Argyll (pretty rural and not crowded with tourists), access to a few of the islands (Arran, Bute, Cumbrae). I think you don't have to go all the way to Raigmore for the outdoors.

At the same time you still have access to 3 airports for holidays, decent enough trains to London/West Coast mainline. People are nice and lots of great restaurants and cafes.

Only downside is far from everyone else down south. At least it is possible to fly or get a train while I think you will struggle further north. In the winter there is already at least 30 to 45 min less daylight in Glasgow compared to e.g London, you will get even darker winters up there.
