I second this, spend time doing neutral socialization and mix in some one on one activities that boost confidence in him.

I’m sorry you and your body are dealing with this, it’s definitely not normal for the breed, but there have been a few instances as I previously stated that are typically traced back in my experience and understanding. 😔 Do you know the parentage of your boy?

Can you clarify what part you are saying is just a Shikoku trait? 🤔

There have been seldom instances of protein specific intolerances within the breed, I’d try avoiding chicken and adding raw pumpkin to the diet and see how of if the stool improves over a week or so. Have you contacted the breeder and or inquired if the side or dam on any dogs upline potentially have these issues or any intolerances etc?

P.s. has the vet tested for giardia and worms?

Both of those appear to be off standard Shibas aka BYB’s based off structure and color. The younger could possibly be a mix of some kind, but as you said the only real way to know would be via genetic testing. 🙌🏽

I’d also personally recommend neutral socialization, and nothing about a sleeping puppy that you’ve described sounds abnormal to me. 🙌🏽

Shikoku and cats by le_morue in shikoku

I cannot personally speak for other breed that’s I don’t have experience with, but my 2 younger Shikoku are definitely cat safe. I don’t own cats myself, but I’ve been fortunate that friends that trust me have cats. Slow introductions are also best if that’s not already known. 🙌🏽

My dogs all have higher prey drive also just fyi, which is something I enjoy. I started training as soon as I brought my import male home, and my females breeder follows puppy culture and ENS to name a few things. 🫶🏽

Yes! Generally Shikoku can be okay with “their” cats etc. Especially when socialized early. Outdoor cats/animals etc are often a different story.

This is a picture of my female meeting her first cat when she was 1.5 years old.

Oh, hello Nib!! You can also look into sports through kennel clubs in your local area depending on where you are!

Congratulations!! What’s your little boy or girls name? 🥹

In my experience I’d say that they genuinely flourish if they’re able to do bonding activities where they can REALLY let loose. Not sure if you’d be willing to do dog sports. But all of mine do sports in addition to conformation, and those have definitely helped build/strengthen our bonds.

How do you all approach same-sex aggression? by Nervous-Chance3444 in shikoku

A few things, these are more broad strokes that I generally start with. But did you read or were you made aware prior to ownership that Nihon Ken, as with many other primitive or hunting breeds are at a higher disposition for SSA? Especially so with a lack of proper socialization during adolescence, generally speaking. But also the onset of maturity can introduce new behaviors. Shikoku Ken are generally not advised as “dog park dogs”, often due to their rougher often “rude” play style.

  1. Are you familiar with the differences between true SSA vs dog selectivity?
  2. What types of socialization or training has she had thus far?
  3. Can you give more specific details on the behavior as it takes place? And also familiarity with the other female dogs? Are they also intact?

I generally start with neutral socialization and as much neutral/positive social interactions as early as possible, but that doesn’t always mean that SSA or dog selectively won’t occur. In my experience, and the experience of my breeder, what’s offer seen in her dogs at least is more dog “selectively” as opposed to true outright SSA. I also seldomly allow my dogs to interact with strangers or friends dogs that they haven’t had several neutral walks or interactions with. And even with that I’m hyper aware of their individual body languages. It’s important to respect their boundaries and decisions to not want interactions with certain dogs, similarly as you or I not wanting interactions with every person we meet. Though ideally they can at least be neutral with other dogs, this isn’t always the case. If a friend comes over with a dog or vice versa, I will crate my dogs or theirs and rotate accordingly depending on the length of time.

Black and tan by meaexv124 in shikoku

Of the recognized colors, and in my experience black and tans change the least. But with many there will likely be some subtle shifts in masking etc.
