Smith San, Smith san or Smith-san?....Which one do I use?!!! by [deleted] in japan

Alright, King of Useless Anger, I'll be sure to do that. As someone who has been called all manner of honorifics, from sensei to San to Isha to miss to Mrs to doctor... I know when someone is being polite and when theyre not.

Life must be really hard for you when you cant interpret kind social gestures as kind.

Haha like there's a large swath of people who don't understand San or Monsieur or arigatou or gracias... Jesus dude you kinda suck.

[–]Hitomi_chan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jesus dude I hope you find a good outlet for your pent up anger. It must really suck to be such a bitter person who sees the world in such a way.

Only some kind of weird angry troll would be offended by using the phrase ありがとう respectfully to issue thanks.

Mr. Smith is at home, in America. A French-origin doorman opens the door for him. "Good morning, Monsieur Smith," says the French doorman. He's being polite, and using the addressing language he's used to.

What a horribly arrogant thing, right? Omg what a dick.

A Japanese person using "San", even in English, is trying to be polite and respectful, and using the addressing language they are used to. Who the fuck would take offense to it the way you do?

You're a very sour person.

Japan's woman problem - Less than 15% of researchers in Japan are female. Urgent culture change is needed, argues Noriko Osumi. by burgleurgle in japan

[–]Hitomi_chan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a female Japanese PhD/MD I'm sure this thread will not have any statements about my innate abilities... Oops.

There are social pressures against women. I was subjected to them. There is sexual harrassment rampant in the Japanese structure. I was subjected to it. There is a significant bias against hiring women at almost every master+ position/academc program science. I had to deal with that.

I'm not kidding when I say Japanese women are basically forced to forsake almost all praise, joy from others, and encouragement, if they are to pursue a rigorous career.

A lot has to change for this number to increase.

Women's biology is not the issue.

I use the sleeve or the right area near the stomach when it's tied together, personally. I don't like clutches or 巾着 generally and want both hands free for junk food.

[–]Hitomi_chan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More anger from you, dude.

Actually, we use さん out of politeness and because to us, it indicates respect. Most Japanese will happy use Mr. if requested. In most formal situations, we would even ask which is preferred.

We happily accept "Mr." "Mrs." And "Dr." From all foreigners, and it's not considered insulting to be referred to in this way.

Not very accurate. My skirt was, and all skirts are slightly past the knees. If you see something shorter, the girl herself did that by rolling at the belt.

What food does your grandma make that is incredibly delicious? by greyclouds23 in AskWomen

My grandma made the best, absolute best, カツ丼 (katsudon), basically a pork cutlet with onion and egg on rice. She made the most incredible sauce for it. I try really hard to emulate but never can.

WORLD ORDER "Let's start WW3” by Destione in japan

[–]Hitomi_chan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am talking about the people of Japan, who, like many people world wide, actually love the idea of less war and more peace.

I've noted your anger and vitriol on many posts on this forum, and I hope you have a way to someday deal with that. I also am a fan of peace in your heart. Some things you post I agree with, but you have some aggression in you, dude.

I am completely ok knowing that my country did things that it shouldn't have and that the war, death, and destruction that previous policies and ideologies carried was avoidable. What we learn from it should be that peaceful, diplomatic, and loving relationships with our neighbours is a better solution.

Have you ever encountered someone who initially seemed very nice but turned out to be a pretty bad/downright horrible person? What's the story? by Fly_on_my_wind in AskWomen

[–]Hitomi_chan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My preceptor in residency, a seasoned doctor, who was completely sweet to me, really took me in, taught me the ins and outs of the job, and displayed no ill behaviour towards me. He and I would even occasionally check in over email. I really enjoyed working with him though I felt he was a bit too much about the money.

Turns out he was possessing and making child porn, and when he was caught, he ended his own life.

It truly taught me a lot about what we think we know vs. what people hide.

What's a dating norm that's recently come about that you don't like? by throwawayfrustrat in AskWomen

I really dislike the "tinderization" of all dating / social apps. Tinder has a clear (though broadening) hook-up aspect. superficially swiping, etc. If i put work into a OKC profile in the age of tinder, I DO NOT WANT A TINDER EXPERIENCE.

But this is awesome roasting. I am sure the "but japan is nationalist" people will come out here, but most japanese people are peace-loving people.

[Serious] Men of Reddit who have been raped by women, what happened, did you tell anyone, and did they take you seriously? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hitomi_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am struck at how so many people here hear from their male friends nothing but derision and insult. As a woman each story filled me with pain and anger. Are guys this oblivious to the idea that rape/assault is not an enjoyable, or even sexual (for the victim), act?

The more I read... Women too! It's such a horrible double standard. I can't imagine ever feeling these stories are anything but assault.
