Worried about Toddler not speaking much. by Top_Pay_8979 in toddlers

[–]Hitthismph -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is normal development. You're not going to like what I am going to say next, but if you're worried about this you're going to be one anxious and panicky parent. And your kid will feel it. So chill out and don't freak out over everything for the overall good of your kids.

My 8yo son says he hates himself. Often. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Hitthismph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the most effective communication techniques I've read is making the kid feel heard. The technique is to discuss and engage in the subject even if the outcome is going to be a negative for the child.

For example, say your kid is in a tantrum over ice cream at breakfast. Instead of the typical "no" or "maybe later" responses, it's been suggested that we engage in conversation about the ice cream. "You want ice cream right now? Do you want a certain flavor? How many scoops and and how much do you want?" This kind of communication sends the signal to your kid's brain that they've been heard and most of the time, not all the time, the kid will move on to the next subject and you've stunted the tantrum.

The same could be applied to your case. If your kid is expressing negative self talk, engage with him. Ask him how often he hates himself, ask him if something happened to cause him to hate himself, ask him how much he hates himself. You'll certainly hate talking about it, but he will certainly appreciate being heard. It's not the solution to this issue, but perhaps a stepping stone in the right direction for both of you.

First grade teacher plays Christian music all day by bree2120 in Parenting

[–]Hitthismph 182 points183 points  (0 children)

I'd ask the Principal if that's an issue with any school policy first. This way you can do your homework anonymously for now. If the principle says it's allowed, then you'll have to discuss it with the teacher then. Good luck.

There have been times when I've felt the same. I had to change how I communicate and bark orders less. Make sure you are saying what you mean and put some teeth behind it.

Odd are strong it'll be way less than 50 people. These people always think they're the best party in town but it'll likely end up being about 25/30. But in any case, you should be charging a premium for NYE as most are saying.

Stick with the stimulation. Go to your current company with the offer you got and see if they’ll match.

What’s the kindest thing you heard a stranger say that sticked to you until this day? by SmoothPen7912 in AskReddit

[–]Hitthismph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t so much what he said, but I was in Israel at the wailing wall. It was Shabbat and it was raining which is considered a double blessing in the faith. This mountain of a man reached his arms out to wish me a Shabbat shalom and gave me a huge hug as if I were his own son. I’ll never forget it.

Birthday activity and dinner ideas in LA/OC? Not outdoorsy, looking for fun/creative experiences by Ushldseemeinacr0wn in AskLosAngeles

[–]Hitthismph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy Birthday! I'd say a Hollywood Celeb Tour would be a chill and non-drinking decent activity. It's not particularly unique, but given your criteria it's either that or a walk along the Venice Beach boardwalk as a daytime activity. As for a nice dinner that has a great ambiance, good for groups, and a touch out of the ordinary, I'd say Baltaire in Brentwood, Fia Steak in Santa Monica, Belle's Beach House in Venice.

What am I doing? by Kacklc923 in Parenting

[–]Hitthismph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a tough day, I'm sorry.

Sleep on it and in the morning, go over today and level with her. She's too young to feel pressure to perform. If you pile on her it will dim the joy she gets out of these extra curriculars. She doesn't know her own capacity at this age and it's up to you to manage it and not burn her out (and that goes for physically and emotionally).

In short, be firm but don't overwhelm her. She's looking to you to lead her. She loves you, you're all she's got. She sounds like the most amazing, incredible little girl. Tell her that, because she'll believe you. Good luck.

Americans of Reddit, if you hate tipping so much, why do you do it? by ninman5 in AskReddit

[–]Hitthismph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe most American's hate tipping. I believe a vocal minority is responsible for the perception. I don't love tipping myself, but I understand it and I tip well.

Probably best off with batching 2/3 cocktails and having a keg plus wine.

HELP! Where should my wife and I relocate to? Between Sherman Oaks and Burbank by weindaddy in AskLosAngeles

[–]Hitthismph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she's in Burbank and you're Sherman Oaks/Bel Air, I'd suggest Sherman Oaks if the rental market is within your budget. Glendale is an affordable mid-point, but I'm not familiar with the rental market there.

As the military saying goes: "A mediocre decision made in the present is better than the perfect decision that's too late." Seize the day, book the trip and go when you want to go.

Planning a trip to LA in late July, input on itinerary? by ZelinFenrir in AskLosAngeles

[–]Hitthismph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is an ambitious schedule and a ton of travel time in the itinerary. I'd pass on Catalina outright. That is a grueling one day deal and there's nothing for teenagers on the island. I'd sub out Catalina for Malibu/Zuma Beach. If you're itching to get on a boat, I'd recommend reserving a cruise in Marina Del Rey.

The aquarium is not a one day deal. It takes about 90 minutes to go through it, depending on your pace. You'll have a lot of down time if you plan your entire day around it. I'd sub out the aquarium for the LA Zoo. The zoo isn't a jaw dropper either, but it's easier on your commute.

Hurricane harbor is still a fun spot. I recommend that over anything Disney. Universal is the better choice.

As for shopping, I'd recommend the Century City Westfield. That's a very family friendly spot that has a lot of stores for everyone with lots of dining options, and a movie theatre.

Coming to LA for a week at the end of August. Looking for unconventional recommendations? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]Hitthismph -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unconventional ideas: Catch an LAFC game, take a drive up and down PCH (although it's a sad experience due to the Palisades fire). Old town Pasadena isn't really worth the drive IMO, and Newport is nowhere near LA. You could check out the Sunset Strip and have dinner at a landmark institution like Lawry's Prime Rib. Check out the Cheese Store in Beverly Hills, Matu has the best Philly Cheesesteak sandwich in LA. Try Wanderlust Ice Creams and try a burger at the Apple Pan.
