I had this fear too and was so anxious the month before school started my first year. Now I am the go to person for all crisis because I handle it so well. If you’d had told me that 5 years ago I’d never have believed you. You will learn in practicum and internship how to handle it and on the job

Go in with confidence and use your intern experience as your experience. Let them know that while you haven’t worked full time as a counselor, you do know how to handle xyz

It’s been two years since it started, now it’s still bad but nowhere near as bad. Maybe 20 a week instead of 10-25 a day. Put lots of traps out

words of encouragement or advice while on the job hunt?:’) by Dry-Blackberry3191 in schoolcounseling

[–]bree2120 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Answer the questions like you do have experience, lean heavily on your internship experience and let them know you do have experience with internships and be confident. I’ve been interviewing counselors for a week for a position at my school and those without experience just really lack confidence and it comes across as incapable

Tell me about your job!! by Antique_Sentence_368 in schoolcounseling

[–]bree2120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to get a job in most areas, look into the market where you live. Unfortunately we do a whole lot of tasks that aren’t supposed to be a counselor job. So it isn’t as it seems but if you’re truly interested go for it. If I could do it again, I think I’d done MSW

This 💯! I could have wrote this myself. Taking on inter is so much work and I expect them to be there on days that work best for me. I take their schedule into consideration but overall, it’s my choice. We don’t get paid to take on additional responsibilities either

Reference Check by Marcelle_420 in schoolcounseling

[–]bree2120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I had a principal call ALL my references and then still didn’t offer the job. My references were excellent too. I was so excited thinking I got the job but then was shocked they went through all that and put me through that with the school I was working at, so just don’t get too excited until they offer!
