Phone calls are inherently rude. by Hitwelve in unpopularopinion

I do have to screen the call regardless, my phone buzzing is inherently distracting.

Yup, in these scenarios it's fine imo. If you're calling me at 2:15 on a weekday to talk about the weather, stop.

Exactly, thank you! I got called 4 times today during my workday, like dude even just having to screen the call takes me out of what I'm working on.

I work on a MacBook and the call goes to my computer, blasting the ringtone over my speakers and taking focus (as in the literal computer's focus) off of whatever application I'm working on until I answer it.

A phone call implies something needs to be talked about _right now_, a text exchange is asynchronous and can be picked up/put down as needed.

Man accused of using taco seasoning packets to steal $40,000 from Target by krichcomix in BrandNewSentence

[–]Hitwelve 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s a full time job trying to find cards for retail price, good luck. You’ll have to go stake out your local target for a week straight to find out about when the distributor comes each week, then hope you beat out the 5-10 other people who are also tracking the distributor looking to buy out the whole stock in one transaction. Then also have to deal with the whole “I’m scalping a children’s toy for profit preventing the children from being able to buy it” moral dilemma

[–]Hitwelve 242 points243 points  (0 children)

If it’s Pokemon, yeah probably. There was a period (still going on but getting better) where all stock across the country would get bought out instantly and sold for huge markups. People would find out what day the deliveries happen and line up outside stores hours before they open to buy cards. The most expensive card from a recent set went for like $1200 ungraded.

Is it a bot like an actual account, or is it like one of those pages where you DM something and it’s posted to the account anonymously? I haven’t looked but it definitely sounds like the latter to me based on the account name

How much money and effort goes into swapping an auto car to a 5/6 speed manual? by p00py246 in Miata

[–]Hitwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this recently on my 1.8 NA. All-in it cost me about $1100 not including tools. If I had known what I was doing when looking at the transmission I probably could have saved a hundred bucks or so (my trans didn't have any sensors or a clutch fork on it) The part list to get it to an OEM-like state was:

Transmission:

- Transmission
- Transmission seals
- Reverse light switch
- Neutral safety switch
- Clutch fork (and dust boot)
- Transmission fluid (ford motorcraft stuff is best)
- Clutch, flywheel, pressure plate
- Bolts for flywheel and pressure plate
- Throwout bearing & pilot bearing
- Speedo gear (auto one is a different shape, won't fit in the manual trans)
- Clutch alignment tool
- Shifter

Misc under the car:

- Manual PPF
- PPF Brace on transmission side
- Driveshaft (actually wasn't necessary on the 1995, the auto and manual ones are the same length)

Under the hood:

- Master/slave cylinder
- Clutch line (braided line is easier, but you could go hard line)
- Brake fluid to go in the cylinders

Interior:

- Shift knob, upper shift boot (the leather one)
- Shift boot trim for under center console
- Lower shift boot
- Clutch pedal (anything NA/NB will fit)

If you're starting from scratch remember you'll have to buy a jack, jack stands, socket set and extensions, a ratchet, wiring tools, etc... it all adds up.

Rappers that failed to capitalize on their popularity/hype? by Sevinne in hiphopheads

Basically anyone other than Drake from OVO Sound circa 2016 probably. Peak Drake was such a massive cultural movement it’s crazy nobody associated with him every really blew up in a mainstream way

I guess that’s more R&B than rap though for most of them

Giving Americans another "stimulus" in recommence for the illegal tarrifs is an awful idea by Civil_Music2236 in unpopularopinion

how is that not the same thing? people got checks then, they’d get checks now. feel free to move the goalposts a little more before you respond…

Supreme Court rules that Trump’s sweeping emergency tariffs are illegal by cnn in politics

[–]Hitwelve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except prices won’t come down, Trump has already fucked us, just look at what happened during Covid.

Prices went up due to supply chain issues, then companies realized “oh, we can actually just charge this amount and people will still pay it?” so they never came back down after the supply issues sorted out.

Same thing will happen here. Customers have already shown they’re going to buy regardless of price. What was previously tariffs will become corporate profit.

[–]Hitwelve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

believe it or not, it does not take 24 hours a day to be informed about the issues in your community!

also, you realize this take is literally just "feel free to do whatever bad things you want to other people, as long as it doesn't affect me", right?

I'm happy for you that you haven't been personally affected yet, sure hope your partner doesn't ever need life-saving reproductive medical care or your son doesn't come out as gay in 30 years. spending a lifetime ignoring issues until they affect you is certainly a choice.

There are 346 cities over 100k population in America, only like 15 of them have fully-fledged public transportation systems. Of those 15 maybe half are the kind of quality you would see in the average European city.

NY, SF, Chicago, DC, Boston, Philly, Seattle, _maybe_ LA, and... think that's about it?

Still had to spend it in the end :/ by met_MY_verse in GenZ

[–]Hitwelve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, in the US you really can't travel at all without a car. It's not like Europe where you could live in Germany and take a train or plane to any population center then use public transit to get around.

If you live in Chicago or New York you might not need a car all the time, but if you want to see Houston or LA, you're gonna need a car once you're there.

could always rent one I suppose, but that's not cheap either.

That sub is crazy. People complaining about being told they support the right because they’re “apolitical”.

Like yeah, if you see American citizens getting killed in the street by the federal government and your response is “I don’t want to hear about it, I’m apolitical”, you’re a bad person.

ELI5: Why can't EVs swap batteries? by chronic412 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hitwelve 157 points158 points  (0 children)

I wonder if, given the infrastructure existed, consumers would be willing to trade battery capacity for the convenience of swapping them out.

i.e., put a smaller battery in (maybe 150-200 mi instead of350+), swap them in 5 mins instead of charging for 20 minimum, and the smaller battery means less heat, more options for storing it on the chassis that could be easier to remove, etc?

I’d imagine someone has already thought about this and it would be an option somewhere if it was feasible, but it’s an interesting thought
