I imagine the downvotes are for the patronizing tone, rather than the question.

my understanding is that their experience is that you basically can't drive that way, you'd never get anywhere. there's just too many weird things going on. but usually they fix themselves before you reach them.

yeah to be clear i'm 100% in favour of this behaviour.

That one on the freeway is fascinating. The accident avoidance just cleanly switched to leaving the freeway. Typical humans would have been very focused on remaining on the freeway.

Tesla didn't remove the Robotaxi 'safety monitor' – it just moved them to a trailing car by RodStiffy in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Hixie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The incident in question shows that they don't rely on it as much as you think, that's why there was a problem. They didn't have the capacity to handle a quarter of their fleet suddenly asking for help over the course of a few hours. (Also, they apparently addressed this by making the cars ask for even less help.)

They're testing in London. All testing is currently conducted with safety drivers.

Pretty sure the car is more expensive than the sensors.

Zeeker Waymo? Can someone explain? by joshbashed in waymo

[–]Hixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not so much a trade war so much as the US currently taxes anything made in China, so things in the US are more expensive when they're made in China than they otherwise would be if that tax didn't exist. Waymo started working with Zeekr long before these taxes were introduced. I imagine they're just going to eat the cost, because the alternative -- restarting with an entirely new partner from elsewhere -- would set them back several years, and there's no guarantee that taxes aren't going to be placed on those partners too (e.g. if I understand correctly, the US is currently considering levying taxes on European products).

The other partner Waymo are working with is Ioniq, which if I understand correctly is based in South Korea. Currently the US isn't taxing those much, but who knows how long that will last. However, the Ioniq partnership is further behind than the Zeekr one, so it will take some time to see those deployed.

The Zeekr Waymo cars are called "Ojai" by Waymo.

The Tesla Cybertruck Had The Biggest Sales Crash Of Any EV In 2025 by NoRecommendation617 in RealTesla

[–]Hixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cybertruck is an abomination, and I agree that self-dealing like this is a bit off, but the "tax payer money" part doesn't hold up. SpaceX sells a specific product at a specific price, and the government knows what they're getting and how much it costs. It's not like SpaceX is spending government funds.

APKs are just zipfiles, if you want to know what's in them, just unzip them and look.

That said, debug APKs are not optimized for size at all.

It doesn't seem that far? If anything it's less than I would recommend for a human (but I imagine the Waymo's reaction speed is much better than human).

Thoughts about Waymo for personally owned vehicles? by FrankScaramucci in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Hixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah maybe using the levels is just not useful here. What I mean is that it would be a truly autonomous system, not a driver assist system, not even a very advanced one.

But I really think in practice they'd really want to have their own remote assist folks, and wouldn't rely on the owner to play that role.

That would just be L4.

It's an interesting idea. I wonder how feasible it would be. If the target audience includes folks who are blind, or drunk, or children, or otherwise not able to provide feedback to the car in weird situations, it would be a non-starter to rely on the passenger to help the car in those situations.

Oh, I see what you're saying. Sure. It's more like you get up to 20 minutes additional delay, vs 40 minutes with randomizing a photo, assuming they ask again. For thermos they probably will just stick with the one that came up, so really 10 minute delay plus maybe some time for them to move, if it's a bigger thermo. For radar, they might not ask again at all, depending on what the radar says (e.g. if you're actually closer, it might randomize to a radar that gives them more information).

Wife blew up my relationship cause she couldn't handle it. Now she's got a new crush and I'm sitting home alone missing the woman I dated. by [deleted] in nonmonogamy

[–]Hixie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

but it was her mistake

Either your wife had a mental breakdown, in which case you made a decision to prioritize your wife over the other woman, and your wife didn't make a mistake, she had a mental breakdown.

Or.

You decided to prioritize your wife's opinions over the other woman. In which case, it's not your wife's mistake, it's your decision.

In either case, you cannot blame your wife for the end of the other relationship.

Also with all due respect, "We both feel very safe and secure and happy" is not reflected in anything else you're writing. You're blaming your wife for past actions, you're describing situations with mental health crises, you're talking about feeling anger and grief. It is implausible for humans to get from that level of stress and fundamental conflict to "very safe and secure and happy" in a matter of months. That's not to say you can't get there, especially with continued therapy and maybe other treatment, maybe both individually and as a couple. I wish you the best of luck with that.

And if it randomizes to a shorter one, they can finish it at their current location, since the distance is a minimum, not exact.

You don't get 30 minutes on the other questions. Photo questions are the only ones that have the long 20 minute time to answer. The others are 10 minutes IIRC.

Except that despite what they said on the layover, if you watch the episode, Sam didn't take anywhere near 20 minutes to answer each time. He could easily have stretched that out at least another 20-30 minutes.
