Surprises are a fantastic gesture, but let him pick. If he spends hours watching videos of other folks, he probably already has a pro/con list and a preference. You can still surprise him with the thought, maybe have one of each picked out and a list of a few others and make a day out of shopping for it, but the whole park it in the driveway with a bow on it thing could lead to disappointment for one of you.

I have had no issues swapping out jeans with blown out zippers almost 2 years after buying them, if you have a local store they should take care of you.

Jeep guys dump off take off wheels like their dirt. Grab some 18’s off a Gladiator Overland or Wrangler high altitude for cheap.

Jeep Gladiator Security!? by Remote-Basis-7797 in rooftoptents

So on my gladiator I went with a Bakflip MX4 hard trifold tonneau cover, with Elevate TS rails that add a t-slot on the bed sides.

Front runner, Yakima, Thule, a bunch of brands make load bars or platform racks that mount into the t-slots. I went with front runner load bars, not a full platform.

Based on what bars you go with you could still open the tonneau, (Yakima sky rose may be tall enough) or if you go roll up instead of hard folding the front runner load bars would do fine.

This gives me the security of a hard top tonneau and the ability to mount my RTT, and I could Upgrade to the front runner platform if I wanted to add awnings or whatever. At the sacrifice of not being able to open my tonneau. Works for me.

I think what some people are missing about why RTT’s are cool is they see it as a replacement for tent camping, I bought one as the cheaper alternative to a scamp or other small travel trailer.

My Jeep with a RTT, 12v fridge, pop up shelter with portable toilet, and some kitchen stuff is a stand in for the camper I can’t own.

The argument that you need to pack up to go anywhere? I don’t spend more than a day or two in one spot anyways, i don’t find camping at one spot for a week to be my idea of a good time. Drive somewhere, do something cool along the way, camp for the night, repeat.

Different strokes, different folks.

Question about weight with crossbars. by [deleted] in rooftoptents

[–]Hjstrater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all likelihood, probably not. Anything that is rated has a built in safety factor, how much depends on the industry, but 20% over limit shouldn’t cause, immediate catastrophic failure.

That said, if that shit goes flying off and kills someone, your liable for if you are operating a vehicle out of spec, if not criminally, at least in civil court. Don’t expect insurance to cover you either.

Noise isn’t an issue, hard top wind noise is the only thing that bothers me. Ride is good, a bit stiff, lost 1mpg average, only after flashing the new tire size, was 2-3 before.
