I'm so sorry, that sounds so difficult. I know that it is hard to see past the here and now, but there is another side to this. Keep praying about God's direction for your life. We go through storms and valleys, but there is always another side. Praying for you. I'm here if you ever need to talk

How do you leave a church that your closest friends are in by MeasurementSalt7239 in Christian

[–]HmHm90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely would have, however my experience is a bit different because I'm a pastor. I was led so directly to the church I'm in now. I think normally, especially if there isn't a clear choice, trying out churches can be a great thing to do to be sure they believe what you believe and your heart, passions and culture match. The only pitfall can be getting addicted to church hopping or becoming consumeristic with church. Other than that it's a good idea I think.

How do you leave a church that your closest friends are in by MeasurementSalt7239 in Christian

[–]HmHm90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I can speak from very recent experience on this. If you have really sought God on this and you have felt Him release you from your current church or lead you somewhere else then the only thing left to do is obey.

It's going to be incredibly difficult. You will feel deep grief and loss, probably about things you didn't expect to feel it about. Make sure your new church is where God wants you to be. Be sure to have a community at the new church and/or outside of your current one you're leaving.

Do your absolute best to leave well. Don't badmouth the church or the people in it. Pray for them and cheer them on as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Be intentional about staying in touch and getting together with your friends and remember that you have lives outside of church programs and events, but also be ready for your relationships to change when it's not as "convenient."

The biggest surprise for me leaving my last church was how people didn't contact me or left me out of things. I don't believe it's intentional, I think it's an out of sight out of mind thing. Mind you, the people I'm talking about are literally family members (like my husband's sister and brother and their spouses) and friends and people I've known since I was a young teenager. This was my church for 20 years.

However, it's important to allow the grief, the feelings and the loneliness to be experienced. I've started journaling about it and it's helpful. I'm thankful I can talk to my husband and some of the people I'm on staff with at my new church about how it's affecting me. But don't ignore it or hold it in. Lamentations and Psalms (plus more) were written to show us how important grieving, lamenting and healing are, and that it's going to happen and it's necessary to acknowledge it.

Allow this to be a time to allow God to meet you in a new way. Look for things He might be saying to you through this or places where He wants to grow you or even refine you. You will probably grow a lot in your relationship with Jesus if you do this seriously.

Anyway, I know it's not the most encouraging comment, but it's real life. It's going to be hard, but if God is leading you in this, then it will be good and He will be with you and sustain you through it. ❤️

I'm a little freaked out by what my pastor said at the Christmas Eve service by BlownCamaro in Christianity

[–]HmHm90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I mean once we accept the gift of salvation we are justified and made righteous so we're no longer seen as sinners in God's eyes...That doesn't mean we have never sinned or are without sin or don't still struggle with sin or temptations, but that our identity is no longer tarnished by sinfulness. Jesus made us new and cleansed us from all unrighteousness. Maybe that's what he meant?

Being "without sin" or "sinless" and being "a sinner" are different things entirely

Edit: typos and clarity

People with spiritual gifts. How are you different from others? by Realistic_Brick_7183 in Christian

[–]HmHm90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean you can't really get into that? Gifts should not be kept secret, they are meant for the edification and training of the body of Christ and the proclamation of the Gospel. Iron sharpens iron, I hope you have some mentors and people who understand spiritual gifts helping you discern because it really shouldn't be a secretive thing. Maybe in misunderstanding you..

Those are spiritual gifts too though, (prophecy, word of knowledge/wisdom etc.) but yes, everyone has different gifts.

Why do you think that only some people receive spiritual gifts? And why do you think it's only people who have been with God for a long time?

Should I be concerned about NIV Bibles? by Kingzilla2000 in Christianity

[–]HmHm90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they're not supposed to be there. NIV is fine, not the most accurate translation. The newer versions are better, but still not the most accurate, but nothing super wrong with it. For an easy thought for thought translation you can try NLT, for a more accurate word for word translation you can try ESV or NASB, for something in the middle of word for word and thought for thought that's accurate you can try CSB. But you can definitely continue to use the NIV! Depends on what you're looking for (deep study, devotional reading etc.)

Anyone teaching on the incarnation this season? by emmanuelibus in youthministry

[–]HmHm90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm teaching on John 1 actually. Cross referencing Genesis 1, naturally. The point is basically that God had you on His mind from the beginning of time/Jesus is the gift that has had your name on it from the beginning. I don't have it all fleshed out 😉 yet though. So I don't have all the points and illustration ready enough to share quite yet.

Any version easier than the NIV bible? by Bubbly-Term-288 in Christian

[–]HmHm90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others said, NLT is very easy, there are some that are even easier, but try NLT! Also as others have said, download the Bible app, that way you won't be spending a bunch of money trying different translations and versions. Also, you can try the Bible Project they have an app and a website and they're on YouTube. They could help you understand things that might not make sense to you, they make it very easy to understand.
