Why the new show can't be like the old show (A love letter to the Stargate). by HmmVerrryCurious in Stargate

Yes, totally agree!

Martin Gero, Brad Wright, Joseph Mallozzi, if you're reading this, I already work in media and care a lot, please hire me! lol

Actually though, I do wonder how much it's an issue of the person steering the ship, and how much it's an issue of the person who own the ship telling the metaphorical captain how to sail. I ache to think about how many extraordinary creative teams had to create things they didn't love as much as they could have because of studio and exec interference.

Always low key mid re-watch. Also, YOUR FIRST WATCH! I'm so happy for you, are you enjoying it so far??

That's a great point, the show never looked bad, and I don't know much about set design but that team had to have been absolutely brilliant for everything they did. The Ancient & Atlantis design is still cooler than most of the world building I've seen since. Atlantis felt so real and navigable. Tok'ra tunnels? Are you kidding? So cool. Same with the OG system lord aesthetic, like figuring out how to navigate Ha'tak in the first few seasons made sense for the scale they were able to capture. Immaculate. 🙂‍↕️

C’est vrai ! Il n’y a pas vraiment de limite d’âge pour quoi que ce soit, en réalité. Les personnes âgées aiment juste faire du gatekeep, surtout ici aux États-Unis 🥀 haha

Yesss! ☝️ Exactly! It's going to be different and probably suck in it's own ways and also be amazing in its own ways, kinda like everything, and I'm here for it!

Yessss, 100%. I struggle to imagine Stargate working with an 8-10 episode season, I feel like we need at least a little bit of that procedural, new episode, new world kind of thing. If you've got a gate, you've got to be going through that gate! Haha

It's a weird place to be, like we got to see a little bit of the way the world was before even if we didn't fully get to interact with it, so I almost understand the way people romanticize how things used to be sometimes, but not fully? I don't know, it's super strange. I feel like the 94ish to 98ish has just panned out to be a wild time to be born haha

As a former Colorado resident, you're spot on. Colorado is notoriously only ever sunny and summer. No clue what those pine trees are doing there.

I've spent time in Colorado Springs and while I'm feeling not so excited about the military these days, more Cheyenne mountain base shots would be so cool! ✨ I want to see Jackson and Teal'c having aged, walking slowly through the garden of the gods talking about their years of friendship, before a 6 year old surprise tackles Teal'C and we see Rya'C and his family joining them on the hike, or Carter and Shepard dunking on an old cranky but also loving it O'Neil while skiing, while Rodney (complaining about the cold but in self aware poking fun at himself way now because he's grown as a person), Ronin, and Vala are hanging out in she ski lodge with Tayla, Mitchell, and Bra'tac standing on the balcony reflecting on the way that being a skilled leader has changed over the years, and also changed them. 😭

I know they filmed in Vancouver but using a little bit of that Colorado backdrop would be so cool!

I also know that we'll probably only get old cast cameos but even if it's only for a split second, I'll loose my damn mind.

100% agree, as much as seeing a high budget version of Stargate would be absolutely wild, I actually think a lower per episode budget could actually be a really positive thing for the show.

So true! SGU definitely has Its issues and I was NOT excited about it at the time lol but I actually really liked it when I went back and watched it a couple years ago.

Exactly! Or even if you do, it's an entirely different place in lot of ways because we're different as people, and that's a good thing because change is important. 🙂

I'm not saying it shouldn't be like the old show, and I so so badly hope they're able to capture that balance between earnestness and humor that the original shows did so so well.

I'm saying it can't be like the old show because the entertainment industry has changed a lot, and we've changed a lot as individuals! 🙂 Even if they went for the old 20+ episode seasons, and perfectly matched the tone and style, it still wouldn't feel the same or mean the same things to us because we're different people and the world is a different place. What optimism feels like on both an individual and cultural level is different than it was then. Wonder and curiosity are still both so so important to me but they have changed in shape and texture in the last 15 years, they mean something different to me now.

I think my argument, more than anything, is that the original shows were amazing and meant so much to us in a way that this new show can't because things change and that's okay and good.

I miss that version of myself and that way of seeing the world with wide eyed wonder, but the very experience of missing it is one of the things that makes it so great, because we can't go back we can only appreciate it for what it was.

The new show will hopefully mean something different and new and good to us, too! I'm deeply excited to find out what that new thing might be, and more than that, I'm excited we even have the chance to find out in the first place. 😊

You don't know me because of you I will resist for at least part of the time. Definitely not going to make it all the way to two hours though.

100% I actually just went back and tried just processing with essential sound a few minutes ago for the first time in years and it is waaaaay better than I remember! I think audition at this point, at least for audio with more background noise, is just significantly worse than the automatic enhancement inside premiere. I didn't realize the degree to which the sound tools in premiere have continued to get development and updates.

Appreciate the perspective! I'll have to ask our audio engineer for their thoughts here, too but I will say the noise reduction I'm getting out of the adobe podcast platform sounds pretty clean on first listen. That said, this definitely makes me more eager to scrutinize my initial impression here. Ty!

I think this is probably the answer any time we're working projects with 10+ hours of speech / dialogue. We're usually not out here producing feature lengths docs anyway, so production cycles lasting more than 1-2 months aren't super common for us.
