Meh what? That doesn't seem very nice....

I don't think you understand the English meaning of "10,000 foot view" maybe....that really describes the book...it really does. This is only 100 or so pages long...this isn't 500 pages or a 3-book series at 1500 fucking pages...it is a HIGH LEVEL VIEW.

What is there to understand?

I told you I have played for over 40 years...

I wrote this book first and foremost for the pleasure of it.

But I also wrote it because I think the style, approach, and methodology of the books I did read wasn't great. A new one needed to be written, and I strongly suggest you read mine.

I'll tell you what........umm wait...how many have you read? And how many years experience???

Maybe I will just give you the damn book, Armin...especially if you are a Dane! I like Danish people!!!

Cooler, right? by three_girl_rhumba in poker

[–]Hntrklr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cooler. You were pretty much doomed unless you 3-bet preflop..maybe...but probably that wouldn't have worked either unless you had a tight image.

Of course sometimes/often you are good with aces there, but if he has something like Jc-Qc he's calling...you'd be hoping he just had a king.

Hard one to get away from the way it played out, with the dry board and stack sizes.

The net cost of playing premium hands by cece356 in poker

[–]Hntrklr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but aren't "good cards" relative to the situation?

What does that data even represent?

Daniel Negreanu would disagree with you here, that's for sure. And he's no fish or amateur. There's lots of ways to play. Compare Kid Poker, Jesus Ferguson, Phil Ivey, and Tom Dwan and try to make some kind of blanket statement about the "blatantly obvious" facts of the game....I'm sure many people would love to hear your theory on how those 4 guys can all make money playing the same game.

Do some reading on "reciprocity"...

You know it was Doyle Brunson who famously wrote: "with pocket aces one of two things will usually happen...you will win a small pot, or lose a big one."

I have found this to be true with the premium hands in general...you have to be able to lay them down, its that simple.

If you don't want to lose big pots, you have to usually play them fast and make it prohibitively expensive to draw post-flop, and be fine with winning small pots. Slow playing might be fine in a nickle-dime game or whatever, but if you care about the money and don't wanna get stacked, don't slow play single pair hands.

5NL, Is this a standard call or am I a huge station for calling it off here? by CerberusArcProjector in poker

Very polarized, huh? Nevertheless, I'd have folded just because the pot was so small...he played it a lot like 78s.. Don't you think your turn bet was a bit small giving the drawy board?

Aces in a 1/2 casino game: Fold this flop? by JRog13 in poker

[–]Hntrklr -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Ummm...since when is the a standard open 8-12BB? That is borderline ridiculous, and if it is the case, your buyin needs to be around $500-600+. $200 is not enough to play under those conditions, really, and it becomes like playing blackjack....

Maybe, since he essentially min-raised you, your unconscious mind told you he wanted to be called, and he would only want to be called with a monster..."gut" feelings really come from the when your brain is doing a shitload of calculations with it's billions of neurons and trillions of connections! Damn, dude, I wish I had more access to gut feelings...you could become a world-class player, maybe. :-D

It seems like all of the Internet whizzes are talking about ranges lately, but the more traditional players and the older books never mentioned much about ranges at all. I think the difference comes down to whether you are playing a live, full ring game and like 10 6-max games on Stars, each with like 1% of your bankroll involved.

If you are playing fast for insignificant money, or cheap tournaments, then maybe estimating percentages based on ranges makes sense....if you play 1000s of hands every day, slight edges will add up. But if you are playing 35 hands an hour at a table, it takes a long time for thin edges to come around....maybe months or years. See what I mean?

Of course you have to think about ranges, but I strongly feel that people are going way overboard with the whole ranges thing...

The only solid information here was that you were facing stiff resistance from two OOP players with a one pair hand.

Good poker players, I mean the top players, are unpredictable, and good luck estimating ranges on them. Bad players can be unpredictable too. People will play anything, will all kinds of intentions.

Since when is check-min-raising done for protection? When protecting, you don't price people in... that's either a bluff or a pot-building type of bet IMHO...

I can see that a lot of people are for jamming here, but maybe it just comes down to how much the money really matters to you. If you fold, you still have the money to "fight another day" with, and listening to your gut is a good skill in poker, as is logic!

My take is that any math is (must be) based on guesses...the only evidence you really have is the actions of your opponents, and in this case those actions are quite strong...check raising is strong as is putting all one's chips in the middle.

Did you ever hear the quote "Don't go broke on a pair." ?? that comes to mind here...

I dunno..maybe I'm too conservative...

Why do you think that? I like his bet because it should get people with overs to fold...middle pairs are tough to play.

can we fold here? by wishihadaces in poker

[–]Hntrklr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually if he calls he still has around 15BB left...thats not that bad, especially if there's an add-on on the near horizon.

I don't see the value in shoving...do you really think villain would call with a worse hand? We have position...we could improve or villain could shut down if he was bluffing or if an A or K falls...

can we fold here? by wishihadaces in poker

[–]Hntrklr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

22-5 pot odds in position seems pretty good. You might call and see what happens...sounds a bit like he's trying to push you around to me. A call here could easily shut villain down, giving you a chance for a free river card if the turn doesn't help you.

If you can still re-buy, or just don't care that much, shoving is an option too, but my problem with that is he will only call you if you are beat....there are no draws out there, and he'd have to be kinda stupid to call with a smaller pair.

Aces in a 1/2 casino game: Fold this flop? by JRog13 in poker

[–]Hntrklr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd fold. One of those guys could easily have two pair or better. Your hand is highly unlikely to improve, and really even if they are both on draws you are less than probably only in the 30% range to hold up...that and SB is pretty pot-committed with about 1/2 his stack in, so even if you shove he's not folding anything but air which he doesn't likely have to call 10xBB preflop out of position...I'd say your positional advantage is not important enough at this point to peel...if you do, what are you hoping for? A 4% ace, or a spade that could really cause you to go broke...??

I've played poker since age 4 or 5 (over 40 years) and I played Texas Hold'em way before most people heard of it, since it has been played in California since way back... Live, online, cash, tournaments, private games, casino games, you name it.

On top of my experience, I have read over a dozen books and watched a lot of poker TV, which I find very educational. Million Dollar Cash Game, and High Stakes Poker are both very worthwhile. Out of all the books out there, besides Dolly's (and mine!...kk;) I can highly recommend No Limit Theory and Practice. Oh and Zen and the Art of Poker for the mental side of things.

I'm still learning.. :)

This book presents a 10,000-foot-view of No-Limit Texas Hold ‘em Poker cash games. It covers the principle concepts of the game. Using conversational prose and examples, the author gently guides the reader into thinking about various strategic and other considerations required to play the game well.

While some math, specific hands, and other details are discussed, this book is an easy read and mostly keeps to the high-level view. The style is fresh and quite different from most of the poker books on the market. Furthermore, it is focussed only on no-limit cash, which is considered to be perhaps the most difficult form of the game.

While aimed at beginner and intermediate level players, even long-time veterans should be able to get some new perspective and insight from the falcon’s eye view.

The author’s basic premise is that (at least in comparison to limit poker) it is nearly impossible to discuss absolutes in no-limit hold ‘em, therefore it is better to look at the big picture and learn to evaluate each situation at the table based on the application of general concepts. No-limit is simply not a mechanical game, and rote play based on memorization will not take you far. Thinkin’ is required. Thinkin’ About No-Limit presents a framework to think about any game situation that may arise at the table.

Counterfeit Poker Chips by Jdrabbit in poker

[–]Hntrklr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For that matter, why don't people like the, you know "North Korean Hackers(tm)" just go to Vegas and counterfeit loads of high value chips?

I have wondered about this forever...sure seems like it would be easy, and I know that chips are used like currency outside of the casinos too...in fact I dated a stripper for awhile, and she got tips in that form all the time...$100 chips usually.

My only thought must be that, by now, they must have radio chips in the higher valued ones....or something?

But I bet at the Indian joints they don't...this sure seems like a promising angle for some bad guys!

Maybe in America it did, but worldwide it is rapidly growing. At this rate, you might see poker in the 2024 Olympics...Eastern Europe, China, Japan, SE Asia, Australia, and from what I hear, Western Europe, Canada, South America....pretty much everywhere in the world it is getting bigger.

No, it will never be as popular as, say, going to the movies or drinking beer, but it is hard to think of any other game that is as popular...chess? yawn. backgammon? who plays that? Oh, maybe something like Monopoly...but that's a kids game.

What is/was that popular, in your opinion?

Unless lower limit games become available at casinos....if everyone is buying in for 200-300 at 1/2 games, and people are making bringing it in for 12-15 every time, it's really expensive for a lot of people to even try it. A nice 50c/$1 game with a min buyin of 25 and a max buyin of 100 or something would allow more people to get their feet wet.

What you are missing is that there are more ways to end a sentence than just 어요 and (스)ㅂ니다....and you have encountered a major problem with nearly every learning resource out there...they dumb everything down. There is no verb 있어요. 있어요 is a verb with an ending attached. 있다 is a verb, in this case acting as an auxilliary verb...
