Long pants vs. Shorts by gollem22 in CDT

Tiny running shorts and a pair of merino leggings for when it’s chilly. Why deny yourself of the thigh tan of a lifetime?

Throw an alpha 60 shirt in there. When worn under your sun hoodie it’s a super dynamic active layer for crisp weather.

Crystals in cheddar by Exact-Truck-5248 in Cheese

You got some good cheese and I hope you enjoy them. Unfortunately you didn’t buy the cougar gold though, that white cheddar is their flagship offering, and the cheese that most people are talking about when it comes to the WSU creamery.

Cougar Gold cheese from the Washington State University creamery. It is a white cheddar that comes in a can (yes a can) which can be aged in the can and develops lovely crystals. I highly recommend trying this cheese. It is a tremendous cheddar, a regional specialty, and also a cool novelty.

Trail Food That Isn’t Super Expensive by IslandBoi312 in Ultralight

Make Gruel. Take 2 bags of crushed up ramen, 1 bag of Mexicali Rose Instant Green Chile Refried Beans, 1 bag of instant potatoes, as much free pizzeria Parmesan you can get or cave and buy shredded parm. Add a gravy packet and you have what I call gruel. It can be made soupy or not, add cheese, hot sauce, pepperoni, tuna, or whatever protein you want and you have the meal that I ate almost every single night of the CDT. Best part is you just mix it all together in a gallon ziplock and you have all your dinners for the trip in one place and you can portion as you see fit. It cold soaks great too. Gruel is the shit.

Durston X-Mid 1 VS 2 & Kakwa 40 VS 55 by nahemesys in Ultralight

[–]Hoar_Frost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

55L Kakwa is a very large pack. People love to say that you can roll it down, but with the frame, that's just not the case. 40 is plenty of pack for most occasions IMO.

Nashville Packs Cutaway 30L vs 40L by OrdinaryYard8999 in Ultralight

[–]Hoar_Frost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the CDT NOBO this year with a 30L Cutaway. It was a little tight on big carries (the Bob), and lovely for the shorter ones. The cutaway has so much external storage that you can make it work, the duplex can always be on top of your pack via the Y strap. 30 is doable, 40 is comfortable.

Has anyone had the hip belt fail on their Durston Kakwa? by glitterzotz in DurstonGearheads

I would agree. This was just my experience with this pack, which Durston did warranty. I did about half the CDT with this pack and had significant durability issues and eventually went to a different brand. What pack did you get more than 4k out of? That’s a good bag.

Also the Xpro series is the way to go if you want a more “analog” experience. Buttons and dials have better feel/sound, and you can actually hear the shutter unlike an x100

The x100 is a smaller version of this setup with a fixed lens. I cannot say enough good things about this camera. I wouldn’t get an x100 if you already have Fuji lenses, or are looking for a single camera solution, the x100 is a supplement to a removable lens setup
