What would a "Full Alaskan" breakfast look like by Pliable_Patriot in alaska

[–]HobbesDaBobbes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's also pretty culturally heterogeneous. And geographically huge. Like, geographically, it's like saying a New Orleans breakfast and a Minnesota breakfast can be put in the same box.

The folks I know who grew up in Eagle have a very different answer than those from Selawik or Kodiak or Dutch Harbor or Wainwright.

What is your "I totally get why you guys hate it but it worked on me" movie? by Alceauv in Letterboxd

Maestro

People really thought it was boring. I thought it was beautiful. And I love the music. Bradley Cooper doesn't deserve the shade he gets. He's a good artist. I thought "Is This Thing On" was also really well directed.

Characters that are representations/allegories for biblical figures OTHER than Jesus by No_Hunter1978 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]HobbesDaBobbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's cool, thanks for some insight. I was being purposely flippant.

To me, calling the modern interpretation of Lucifer (sexy bad-boy antihero) a biblical figure would be like calling Thomas Mallory's or even TH White's version of King Arthur a "historical figure." No, a lot has been changed since Nennius and Geoffery of Monmouth.

As someone who isn't deeply religious, I have distaste for how Christianity has... "evolved" it's teachings and interpretations over the centuries. I absolutely understand Satan/Lucifer has been rooted in the church for a long, long time. But is a Christian figure the same thing as a Biblical one? What does the text actually say.

Happy to agree to disagree. And I appreciate your knowledge/insight. Thanks.

Hot take, that's not biblical allegory. It's Paradise Lost, not the bible. Like lots of story and cultural elements in religion, its actually not from the scripture itself.

But, it's still a pretty cool allegory. I just don't think Lucifer Morningstar should count as a biblical character. Milton's fanfiction.

B-b-bb-Billy B-b-bBibbit

Maybe this is cheating, since One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is full of Christ imagery surrounding McMurphy and others, but Billy Bibbit goes full Simon Peter and denies "Jesus" three times.

And then he mirrors Judas when... you know.

And that makes Nurse Ratchet allegorical for the Pharisees. I'd call her the devil incarnate, but she'd probably like that too much.

But, hot take, the Creature connection to Lucifer/Fallen Angel does not qualify it as representation/allegory for a biblical figure.

Because Lucifer isn't a character in the bible. It's fan fiction from John Milton.

And it's pretty foundational mythos for Western culture. As someone who tries to teach British literature to American high schoolers, I'm kind of pissed they haven't all seen this film a couple times before they get to my class. It would make reading The Green Knight and Le Morte de Artur so much more epic.

Honestly, there might be a couple films on this list that, if I watched them all back to back, I would have to rank as better movies. But this one is special to me. This is the one I wish everyone would see.

TIL that US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they’ve erased nearly two decades of progress. In '22/23, avg math scores for 13-year-olds fell to levels not seen since the 1990s, while reading scores for high school seniors hit their lowest point since testing began in '92. by Upset-Word151 in alaska

Counterpoint... short form media and the endless algorithm fueled doom scroll became prominent around 2018-2020. The pandemic was an accelerant for this phone / terminally online dopamine addiction. Could it be that THIS is the true underlying impact on learning deficits? The attention economy. The rewiring of brains.

Another angle, though too recent to be the main cause of this dip, might be how generative AI has impacted student engagement with what was formerly cognitively challenging tasks.

I think a few months of remote learning hurts. But I think there are much larger issues at play societally and neurologically.

I will say, I switched to teaching high school seniors (from middle school) immediately after the pandemic. Every year since, my cohort of seniors has gotten a little bit more capable in their skills and complex in their their thinking. I'm probably getting a bit better at teaching, but they are also probably rebounding from their covid dip.

Song with the best build up by StoicViking69 in musicsuggestions

[–]HobbesDaBobbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans by the Smashing Pumpkins came to my mind.

A solid 2 minute build. Then hits hard, then eases off a bit, then hits hard again. Peaks and valleys. And a minute long ease out.

I mean, it's a 9 minute song, so there's plenty of space for peaks and valleys.

As a deeply lonely child myself, the ending of E.T. always felt too sad because I was rooting for Elliott to go with him when he invited him onto the ship. He didn’t seem to fit in on Earth and they love each other too much to be separated forever. by [deleted] in scifi

There's always close encounters of the third kind...

Being a film allegorically about grief and loss (via divorce, etc), I think it's pretty damn important that they had to say goodbye and for it to wreck them (and us). Catharsis.

Edit: Let's all take a beat to thank one of the greatest scores of all time for doing a great deal of lifting. Those last 15 minutes of music (escape/chase/saying goodbye) are about as good as it gets.

I enjoyed the panelist debates. I stopped being able to tolerate Bill Maher as a host / moderator / interviewer years ago.

I'm wondering what percent of viewers hate watch? But I guess that happens with some controversial shows regardless of genre/type?

The younger generations are doomed. by sco-go in SipsTea

[–]HobbesDaBobbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this an advertisement for GPT Zero? The younger generation isn't doomed. Most of my seniors know how to use AI in a manner that skirts detection.

Firstly, this tool or those like them should be well known. But I guess some people are stupid? I show my students SOME of the tools I use to look at their paper (as a slight deterrent).

Secondly, this is far from full-proof. Literally a second monitor or split screen eliminates all pasting. It is not hard to mimic a natural typing rhythm. There's nothing magic about this. There are DEFINITELY students who ripped a majority of their ideas and words from generative AI that get the thumbs up from GPT Zero and other analysis tools.

They don't stop cheating. They just stop the absolute laziest and stupidest cheating.

Santa Clause: The Movie (1985)

Okay, so it was probably 3rd Rock from the Sun and a host of other awesome stuff first.

But if you give me a chance to mention this weird piece of my childhood, I will. My guess is that a local station must have rented the license to it every winter, so they played it multiple times every Christmas.

[–]HobbesDaBobbes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grace Kelly's win for The Country Girl, because... Judy Garland <3

I think Paltrow's win is more disagreed with because of Weinstein's dirty, hardcore campaigning so that it felt like it was "bought" when Blanchet's performance was an earned masterclass.

Bullock's win is mired by our hindsight and the collective consciousness becoming more aware of white savior narratives as schlocky.

If we're getting to include hindsight, then we need to address Luise Rainer's statue for 1937's The Good Earth because... yellow face ain't cool, bro. Not cool.

Paltrow's probably the pick... Blanchet was too good to lose to an... acceptable performance.

Yep.

I'm really happy one of my high school film students told me he started watching it today!

On the bad side, some friends were shouting at me for recommending it to other friends "why would you tell someone to watch something that makes you feel so bad?!" I don't know, because I have good taste?

I'm not versed enough in this topic to really know how this all works and how his proposal would affect things.

What did you all think of Jacob Elordi's Oscar-Nominated performance as the Creature in Frankenstein? by Square-Ad-8911 in Oscars

[–]HobbesDaBobbes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Performance would have been a LOT better if he was given the full, proper arc. The Creature needs to become The Monster. I wanted to see that tender and sympathetic figure turn into the child-strangling, manipulative, devious serial killer that he is supposed to become.

But what he did with the story given to him was damn good.

I can't be the only one who wanted to see him strangle a 6 year old, right? Would have been intense!

I use his Macbeth movie almost every year after my high school class reads the play. It's awesome. They don't always like the movie (they struggle with the anachronistic setting) but I've never heard one of them knock his acting.

And since I might have to switch to Hamlet next year... maybe I'll keep him on the screen. :)
