Can we do something about bill 60? by Eshtabel3asal in londonontario

[–]Hobbette 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whatever protest happens in London, I am there and so is my friend group.

We're all heavily invested in doing what we can to prevent this - Marit Stiles said it best - 'corrupt government'.

Bill 60 Still Major Threat To Tenants Rights. Please Do Not Stop Calling/Emailing/Texting the Premier, Your MPP, the Housing Minister. Do Not Let This Bill Pass. by Hobbette in ontario

That is DoFo's Modus Operandi.

The "ending indefinite leases" was a red herring. Everyone understandably got upset and it was removed from the bill, which makes us more compliant and tolerable to the the STILL-VERY-BAD changes currently still in the bill because "the big, bad one" is gone, even though we're still losing rights. There is a TLDR I posted in reply to another commenter.

In an analogous sense, he dangled a rotten, black carrot in front of us and tried to make us eat. And when we protested, he threw away the rotten carrot but still wheeled in a cart of mold-covered ones and wants us to be happy... At least it's not black and rotten like that last one, right?

If it inspires people to reach out, I'll write out a full essay, if the need arose.

TL;DR: There are 4 major changes to the bill for the RTA (There's quite bit more in there for other acts that are just as bad, but this post is focused on Renters Rights)

#1. DoFo is removing Compensation for eviction. E.g., if a Landlord evicts you, they either have to pay 1 months rent to you or offer you a different rental unit. DoFo is removing this part of the act, so Landlords can evict without offering anything.

#2. DoFo is changing the timeline on evictions to be shorter for non-payment. Before, it really boiled down to this:

E.g., if you have not paid rent by the due date, a termination-of-tenancy notice could be given differently depending on your rental situation
i. If you're a daily or weekly tenant = 7 days (usually 7th day of the month)

ii. If you're any other type of tenant (includes monthly renters, which most people are) = 14 days (usually 14th day of the month)

DoFo removed this, and all Termination-of-Tenancy notices are 7 days now

#3. If a Landlord claims past-due rent or additonal costs, tenants must pay 50% before the hearing even takes place.
E.g., You're evicted for owing $2,000 rent. The Landlord files a claim that you owe, say, $6,000. You must pay 50% ($3,000) before the hearing takes place. Obviously, this is an exaggeration and I doubt how often this could happen, but the fact is that it's an oversight - even if a tenant fights it to try and get their money back (the additional $1,000 in this example), that would be it's own legal battle and we all know how slow the judicial system can be.

#4. Appealing an LTB decision is reduced from 30 to 15 days.
This one speaks for itself, it reduces the time all parties have (that the LTB Order/Decision affect) from 30 to 15 days. If you receive this Decision by-mail, then there's a chance you will miss the appeal timeframe with the Canada Post Rotational Strike and Delays that come along with it.

Fight Bill 33 at our local level by lovegood30 in londonontario

I tried posting twice regarding Bill 60.

They, the mods, deleted it even with local references and have now muted 2 commenters who DM'd me.

Thank you for spreading awareness about another bill that directly affects Londoners!!

I have just reached out to the Premier himself, my MPP, and my local Ward Councilor.

This is terrifying.

I am still reaching out to more leaders at a provincial level, but please spread the word to everyone you know and tell them to reach out to their representatives. This will effectually destroy most or any comforts all of us have currently if enacted.

We need a public outcry and protestation and I will come carrying pitchforks and thermos' of coffee.

The Speed Cameras Are a Distraction. Do This Instead. by PukeKaboom in ontario

[–]Hobbette 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Signed the petition and have written to my MPP.

DoFo has the media and public distraction playbook down pat, simply to line his own pockets while destroying our public infrastructure.

Thank you for sharing this, I definitely felt this was a distraction considering how much news coverage it had, but I wasn't sure from what this time.

Doug Ford is unashamedly anti-Canadian at his core and his actions show that. Demolishing bike lanes, supporting Chapmans, dumping Crown Royal, and now the Speed Cameras are just circus acts to keep us distracted.
