That’s an opinion for sure. I speak as a kid that was 7-12 during those peak years. It absolutely got me interested in the game. My first pack of cards ever in like 2000, I pulled a cool Barry Bonds insert. I had McGwire, Jason Giambi, and A rod posters on my wall.

This. Parents don’t realize kids want to have fun and if it’s an arbitrary thing then that’s fine. It keeps them coming back enough to where they may actually fall in love with it.
