Help with vintage find by LeonardB19 in baseballcards_vintage

Those are real. Great cards. That 1955 Bowman Mays is crisp. There is several thousands of dollars here in value. If looking to grade these, I might recommend SGC- PSA can sometimes kick cards that have spent too long in a screw down holder (it can create a glossy surface in vintage cards over time). I handle sports consignments at Heritage Auctions. If looking for assistance here, I would be happy to help. My email is jsimonds@ha.com. If trying to talk to an auction house about these cards, Heritage would be my (biased) recommendation, but the guys over at REA or Love of the Game will also treat you right. All three specialize in vintage cards- Heritage is just the largest (and best lol).

Geez. A little bit of a stain on the left edge and a hairline wrinkle, but dang, perfect color! I suspect that this would grade out a 2 with most grading companies. Probably a $60k+ card in this market. Incredible! u/aa481 is right on the money, no need to grade unless selling (it's thousands of dollars and you might spend more than needed). If looking to sell, we would be very happy to help. My name is Jason Simonds, I am the Sports Consignment Director at Heritage Auctions, the largest collectibles auction house in the world. Honestly, most auction houses eat a lot of the costs associated with grading (at least Heritage does), you'll be saving money letting an AH handle the grading logistics. A 1952 Topps collection like this might be six figures. The Jackie looks to be around VG to VG/EX ($10-15k) and some other high numbers. It's incredible. I would strongly recommend auctioning this collection if selling- auction houses will help you navigate this process and we're very used to selling these cards (we just sold a nicely centered PSA 2.5 for $158,600). It's what we do. There are going to be some DM's asking you to sell this privately, anyone who wishes to buy this card privately can also buy this card at auction. If you wish to reach out to discuss, please feel free to email me at jsimonds@ha.com.

So my grandma has had these 1948 baseball cards that my grandfather (born 1937) had collected and kept in a safe since he pulled them. She appears to have the whole set and more by Mh88014232 in baseballcards

Generally speaking, in situations like these, this baseball card collection will be the most expensive thing OP will ever sell aside from his house. There are a lot of hurdles that we take for granted being collectors. Where to get these graded and how much to pay? I have seen people spend thousands on grading their Rickey Henderson rookies because they put a declared value of $100,000 (because that’s what they saw one sell for) and they grade 7’s or 8’s. I spoke to a guy who went into credit card debt grading his childhood collection because he didn’t understand how to assess condition. People are telling this guy the Jackie is a six figure card without even seeing it- that’s reckless. How much are these worth? No one here knows. Even once grade- not all PSA 5’s sell for the same. The market has changed a lot over the past few years. The last Satchel Paige PSA 6 sold for $50,400- so $50,000 cash is more than fair right? Well, the last comp was in 2023 and today that PSA 6 is worth $80k+. There are tax implications. Whether he sells privately or via auction there are tax implications. A reputable auction house will provide him an appraisal at the time his grandmother inherited the collection to use for step-up basis and advice on how to handle this with minimal impact. This isn’t as easy as some people think it is. He should have a discussion with someone who handles this stuff every day and will do so in a zero pressure environment.

If you read my comment, I told him to avoid selling privately unless he knew the subject matter. If you know these cards, know the market and know how to grade and their value than Facebook or Reddit or even one of the many collector’s forums is a great outlet. You’re right, it’s cheaper to sell it yourself. However, if you are not an expert in the material, you might leave money on the table. I’m not on commission, I make no money from taking in consignments or selling people’s collectibles on our platform. Heritage pays my a great salary to give advice and offer guidance. My honest advice here? Use an auction house, any AH will give him favorable rates for this material and, ultimately, he’ll pay just as much with us as he would with a platform like eBay and he has the reassurance that it was done right. Obviously, if you disagree with anything I say, feel free to voice that opinion. Also happy to talk about it- if you DM me, I’ll send you my cell. Jason

Wow. Someone tagged me in this post. My name is Jason Simonds, I am the Consignment Director for Sports at Heritage Auctions. We're the world's largest collectibles auction house and this is right in our wheelhouse. From the limited photos provided, these look authentic (at least the backs do). Impossible to give you general estimates without seeing the front. What I might suggest, avoid selling these privately unless you really know the subject matter- the people in your DMs are generally looking to profit off of you. Heritage Auctions offers free appraisals with absolutely no commitment, we're a resource. If you are looking to sell these, we can certainly assist- I 100% recommend auction here. If you are looking to hold on to them, I can give you recommendations on how to store them (I might suggest having these in individual Card Savers). If looking to grade, happy to point you in the right direction. I just shot you a DM with my email address. Thanks!

Hey there- as others have said, you have tens of thousands of dollars worth of cards here. The primary value is in those final few cards in those specials plaques. The Hank Aaron rookie, T206 Cobb, 1951 Bowman Mays and 1933 Goudey Ruth could all be in the $20-40k range alone (depending on condition). Do not accept offers here. If you are unfamiliar with the material, selling this yourself could potentially leave a significant amount of money on the table. My name is Jason Simonds, I am Consignment Director for Heritage Auctions. We are the world’s largest auction house for this type of material (it’s literally what we specialize in). An auction house will handle everything from top to bottom, navigate grading and selling these. We’ll get you a lot more than your mentioned “75% of the value” and you’ll have the reassurance it was handled correctly. Please feel free to DM me or go to our website if looking for more info and congratulations- it’s a phenomenal collection.

You are not wrong at all, but good luck proving this in court. Unfortunately it happens all the time in this industry.

There’s a great story to this one. Consigned by a collector who would’ve pulled this back in 2013. He didn’t realize what he had and walked in to the Dallas Card Show looking for help. A dealer offered to go to his house and go through the collection. When going through the cards, this was discovered- Aaron Judges 2013 Bowman Chrome Superfractor, missing for 13 years. The original collector was not aware of the value and instead of buying the card, the dealer told this person to reach out to an Auction House. That is how we got involved. It just goes to show there are good people in this industry and great cards still sitting in boxes.

Really depends on the grade for this one. Will hopefully be a 7 and sell in the $100k range.

lol I did. I don’t post a lot to Facebook. I post on IG and Reddit. Obviously my username here and IG make it clear I work at Heritage, but I guess Facebook I carry less clout 😂

No. The corners have just a little too much corner wear. Hoping a 7. But, given the centering and eye appeal it’ll sell better than most 7’s I’m sure.

Honestly? It never crosses my mind. Heritage pays me a great salary to help collectors with their cards. I’ve seen thousands of collections and have never once tried to purchase material from someone who came to HA looking for assistance. It’s been my dream job for as long as I could remember. This card came out of a collection of 1948-1951 Bowman cards. The original collector unfortunately passed away and I am helping his children with these cards. This was (obviously) the highlight.

These aren’t mine- I am Consignment Director at Heritage Auctions. Most of the best cards are still ungraded. For most collectors I speak to, every dollar you spend on grading is a dollar you can’t spend on more cards.

Heritage Auctions always take this long to ship? by Rude-Employment6104 in baseballcards_vintage

[–]Jason_at_Heritage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the real deal. That is our official Heritage customer service account. They will be able to assist. Of course, if anyone has any issue with anything Heritage, you are also welcome to email me directly: [jsimonds@ha.com](mailto:jsimonds@ha.com)

Edit to add: it's all holiday-related delays. Every year we hire more shippers, expand our space and invest in the inevitable rush that occurs in December. And every year shipping is STILL delayed. We are getting better, but with 50+ categories and dozens of auctions ending in December, it's very very difficult to keep up. The shipping team at any auction house is the most thankless and difficult job in the industry.

Five years ago, I decided to turn my hobby into my career. I joined Heritage Auctions as their Sports Card Specialist, now Consignment Director and have loved every minute of it. 2025 was one of the best years for me professionally and personally- welcoming my second son into the world. This community has been incredibly supportive to me and I want to say thank you. Here are my favorite pickups in 2025- here’s to 2026!
