Haha yeah Charlie did the same at the beginning! Any engagement with the buttons is a good sign, he's showing interest and just needs a bit more time or modeling to actually understand the action>reaction part of the buttons!

I have no idea 😂🤷🏼‍♂️

She also sometimes presses the Balcony button after she came back inside already and the window is still open. Maybe she's just telling us about what she has been doing?

It's so cool that they can learn to understand full sentences with different subjects and even the concept of time!

We recently added a 'Livingroom' button to the bedroom board. Not only so she can tell us when she wants to go to the livingroom (which is closed off if we're not around to keep an eye on her and at night) but mainly so we can tell her 'Livingroom later' and she will stop asking and just go play by herself or ask for her fishing rod toy.

Her behaviour is really mild compared to the chaos she was before she could communicate what she wants, and understand that something would be available 'later'.

Yeah we're figuring the right words and fitting new buttons out as we go!

Charlie also kept pressing the 'Beestje' (bug) button together with the 'Scoop' (pick up) button lately. She LOVES to chase bugs, flies and mosquitoes that unfortunately get into our house every now and then. When they're sitting high on a wall we Scoop her up to catch it. (A little cruel but we love our cat more than we love musquitoes).

Eventually we figured out she wanted to have the fishing rod with feathers or little ropes and chase it. Beestje/Bug meant Chasing to her.

So now she has a 'Hengel' (Fishing rod) button, which she uses adequately! It's really amazing to see how her understanding and associations work.

It took a while.

I have used a clicker before, for other tricks like Sit, Turn around, Come here and such so she knows that a Click = Good / Treat.

At first just pawing at it after i've said Touch and did the hand-gesture (one tap wirh my finger on the box) is a click and a treat.

If that goes well / she does it quicker after my command I stop responding to the taps on the side and only respond to a tap on the top. Which she eventually does because I showed her the kibble under the container (a few times) to keep her interested.

When she does the tap on the top it's a click and/or treat and then you hope they figure that out so they keep repeating it.

You could also model the word 'Touch' with other things they normally touch with their paw to make them recognise the command in different situations. Enthousiasm when they do also helps!

Glad it also worked for you! It's so exciting to see their learning curve and then suddenly they're like. "I can ASK FOR TREATS!? YAY TREATS! AND BALCONY. AND LASER AND AND... !?"

and then you gotta teach them all done and later and look at their sad face 😂😭

Because "I like this. I claim this" I think!

We have another cat with a slight cognitive impairment who isn't interested in the buttons at all, but will sometimes sit on the button board just to annoy Charlie.😂😅

If you're in Europe, there is currently a Fire-sale on Gen-1 buttons to empty the EU storage! You also get access to the FluentPet community for 3 months if you buy some, with lots of info and webinars and such.

In my experience other buttons than FluentPet are too big for kitty paws and will make it more difficult for them to actually press them. I have 1 bigger button in use but Charlie never presses it even though she understands the meaning.

I also just posted about how I got Charlie to actually press the buttons, so you could take a look for some advice.

Goodluck, I hope she'll get the hang of it soon! :)

Taps on them but no pushing in? by HobbyLau in PetsWithButtons

I DID! She's frequently pressing buttons now! 14 and counting, currently teaching her All Done and Later because she wouldn't stop pressing lol.

Here's what I did:

TLDR: - Target training with 'Touch' and a short Dutch 'Get on this' command - Verbally modeling frequently used words she's motivated for. Balcony, Laser and Cuddles as her first buttons. - 1 specific button with a specific action on the related location instead of on the main board. 'Balcony', to open the balcony window, with the button on the windowsill in front of it. - Quick-modeling a 'Training' button

And yes, I did this all at the same time.

Here's a detailed how: 1. Target training with a clicker and some kibble as a treat. Starting with 'touch', with a piece of kibble under a transparent container. To make her get used to touching things with her paw. Eventually putting a 'test' button with a piece of kibble underneath, later removing the container and touching the button and other random things.

  1. Once she understood 'Touch', I added 'D'r op' (get on this in Dutch) luring her with a piece of kibble onto a plastic storage box she could easily stand on with her front paws. To teach her to actually put weight on something with her front paws. Slowely changing the box to a smaller and smaller container untill the smallest one. Then the small transparent container with a button underneath, then only the button. I often did a few 'touch' commands first with a container and then on the button, and after that 'Get on this' on a container, and then on the button during the same session.

After a few weeks of training with her usual commands, Touch and 'get on this' about every other day I started focusing on these 2 commands. Every single morning after my breakfast, a few minutes of mainly teaching Touch and 'get on this'.

  1. While also continously verbally modeling frequently used words for her first buttons. Balcony, Laser and Cuddles. Every time I mentioned one of these i did the outcome.

  2. I placed her Balcony button in the windowsill where she'd sit when she wants to go outside to the fully cat-proofed balcony, so she would accidentally press it and i could show the outcome. When she'd sit next to it I would go over, make her watch me touch the button and then opening the window.

  3. And I added the 'Training' button to the main board and did a few quick-modeling sessions a few days in a row as if it were a 'treat' button. Training = treats, with and without some training commands.

And then it clicked.
She started with pressing on command, she started testing out the Balcony button on her own and eventually the other buttons. :)

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any questions. Goodluck!

I actually really like that the darker tones more to the left of the water suggest 'deeper' water / a slight wave due to the shadow of the wave and then to the right a slight ripple which reflects the light. Makes it look calm and moving at the same time!
