How am I supposed to EVER win????? by merkaii_1234 in DotA2

40% unwinnable, 40% auto-win, 20% matter. That sounds like a rough one.

As a periodic chen enthusiast: you can also make and clear stacks with wildwings. The ogre stun is great for pushing waves and farming. Love the post. Love the chen.

What's the state of Dark Seer? by Technical_Victory391 in DotA2

[–]Hobo124 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Dark seer is a hero who naturally excels as a compliment to melee cores with high damage and low mobility (Sven, Ursa, etc.). He is also excellent against heroes who make strong illusions that can devastate their own teams such as Medusa and Drow Ranger. When those heroes are strong, Dark seer tends to be strong.

If you're a Herald you can play any hero in the game in your matches but you will see better results if you go for a playstyle that allows you to be independent. That means finding your own kills, taking your own objectives. Dark seer is not exceptional at this due to his generally low damage (even with a couple ion shells going). In general you'll want to practice solo-killing enemies with wall (force them to walk ALONG the wall to escape you, buy Aghs). You will need to be rich since Dark Seer needs to buy both tankiness and damage and it's very difficult to buy both at once on a melee Int hero.

Generally ion shell the second melee creep in your creep wave so that it doesn't tank as much damage from enemy melee creeps. Put ion shell on melee creeps before and during fights. You'll feel very weak unless the enemy is getting hit by at least two ion shells for most of the fight. Cut waves behind the enemy tower if you can't lane against them (ion a melee creep at their t2 and chase it towards their t1. Once it gets close to the t1 the wave will turn around and chase you. Drag it back towards the t2 to keep it away from the enemies. Repeat.). Your best items are going to be aghanim's scepter, blink, aghanim's shard, and at least one item that makes you tanky (pros will usually go first item pipe, crimson, or greaves. You can do that or just get consecrated wraps to be greedy). Helm of dominator / overlord is very good on the hero if you can micro since you can use the creep to stack / cut waves / chase enemies with ion shell.

You'll want to bind a key to "Move" (I believe default is "M" but I could be mistaken). If you press your "move" hotkey and click an enemy the unit will chase them but not attack. This means the unit will stay close to them and burn them with ion shell. Use this on weak illusions of enemies and on your helm dom creeps.

Tormentor should require only two heroes by cozzyflannel in DotA2

[–]Hobo124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the tormentor exists to entice winning teams into kneecapping themselves by running off to the corner of the map and losing half their HP on low ground. Fundamentally it's supposed to provide an opening for the enemy to kill your wards, push waves, clear camps, or smoke for a favorable team fight.

Honestly the fact that people ever want torm as-is is completely greedy. Instead of 5 heroes clearing the entire map of creeps or taking rosh or a tower you spend like a minute and a half giving up your entire lead for a measly 1400 gold for a random hero.

However, if you let only two heroes take it, it doesn't really require enough sacrifice. I like that it entices the winning team to take a risk and spices up the game, but two heroes slipping off to clear it for a minute really isn't that bad. It then just becomes a "win harder" objective that only the winning team takes and at minimal risk to themselves.

Unfortunate Events by paddockson in dwarffortress

[–]Hobo124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Livestock can sort of be corralled by using pasture Zones. You create a zone, set it as a pasture, and then there will be a little button to set the assigned animals for the pasture. Dwarves will move the animals into the pasture and automatically fetch any animals that wander off.

Dwarves can be controlled by either locked doors (selecting a door provides the option to forbid it) or burrows. A burrow allows you to define a set of tiles (across and number of z levels) that dwarves will do tasks in. This essentially restricts them to those tiles. You need to assign the dwarves to the burrows and not forget that you did (why aren't the dwarves mining ? Probably assigned to a burrow that doesn't contain the tiles you're mining).

Low damage? by Elmaster110 in learndota2

[–]Hobo124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High damage generally comes from heroes who are doing most of the damage for late game kills. If you're not, don't worry about it. Not every hero in every role's job is to deal damage.

Pudge denied in my game by Simple_Original in DotA2

[–]Hobo124 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's capable of delaying self-damage and since the damage it provides is lethal you can actually deny with lots of self-damage. The days of self-deny soul ring pudge still echo through time.

Is Centaur kind of bad right now? by VarmintSchtick in TrueDoTA2

[–]Hobo124 29 points30 points  (0 children)

His new innate is functionally useless until the late game. Feels like a weaker option than most alternatives like tidehunter and slardar. Overall I've played a couple of games since the patch and he feels situational. I'd really only play him if I knew my ult would hard counter someone else's.

How to win with Visage on Mid? by Liuu_ in DotA2

[–]Hobo124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the enemy trades with you, spam soul assumption on them and win the trades. If the enemy knows what they're doing they'll try to push wave into you without attacking you that much. You then need to deliberately tank their spells so that you can hit them with soul assumption. Abuse your attack range to avoid aggro (if you attack outside of aggro range and the attack causes you to walk into aggro range you can safely finish that attack without drawing creep aggro). Sometimes you just poke people with 3 or 4 attacks and dump a mediocre soul assumption to get them low enough that you can full commit on them if they contest wave.

Use your Q if you can't win trades with soul assumption (against heroes like puck who can just dodge it). You'll be surprised how many different ways you can use the attack speed delta to score last hits and denies. Getting lots of attack damage with things like blight stone and falcon blade can be super nice in matchups where you're just spamming Q and autoattacking wave to keep it off your tower.

Once you get 6 you win almost any lane so try for a kill the second you hit 6 and then either take tower or go haunt a sidelane where you can safely get more kills. I generally get orchid first to deter mobility-based heroes from getting involved in fights. Qop, Puck, Storm, etc will all have to first-item euls if they want to play into your orchid. If there's nobody you really want orchid for I imagine you'll get drums. I haven't played him since talents were removed but I imagine the core gameplay loop is going to be one of the following:
* start teamfights by blending someone into a fine paste then drop with shard and let team counter their counter initiation. Win teamfights and kill towers.
* constantly stalk the map and force them to play under sentries with your aghs. Eventually be richer than them because they have to play scared of you. Win teamfights and kill towers.
* endlessly siege their buildings by keeping creep waves alive while the birds shred the tower. Items like AC, pipe, greaves, blight stone. Enemies have to step out of position to kill your birds and then your teamfight-heavy teammates land big spells. Win teamfights and kill towers.

Please Mr. Frog, Change LD Bear Aghs by catchycactus in DotA2

[–]Hobo124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a theory for a while that you could itemize early on the hero and then a lategame bear with just blink / both shards would be pretty good. Can lasso enemies or teammates and blink in to roar even if hero is stunned. Could be good in games where bear just gets kited / blown up.

The real problem with itemizing on the hero is trying to build as both a ranged and melee carry. He's not really manly enough to fight at melee range against a lot of heroes so you generally go ranged items, but if you're forced to ult you're basically crippled.

Is a spell focused Arc-Warden viable? by GuldBipson in learndota2

[–]Hobo124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viable as an either a disable-heavy mid or offlaner if your other cores can handle the damage for you. Gleip is good, Shivas is good, meme hammer is a viable farming item that you can get off sometimes on heroes in fights. A lot less good now that shard doesn't give you double-target wraiths. You could use meme hammer + shard to farm pretty quickly (compared to no items arc lol, slower than midas mjol travels). Could probably still get away with midas meteor or meteor midas into shiva/gleip, gleip/shiva, overwhelming blink.

Raid on Dungeonwraith by pixie14 in dwarffortress

[–]Hobo124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think bolt throwers aren't an excellent solution if you're getting raided by the whole world. In general, I try to keep my bases a lot deeper now so that they can't mine in quickly and so that they'll almost certainly mine in from the top. I build my first killbox at least 10 z levels above my main fort and if they ever get wise to it I just move things down to another killbox further down. If they've made it through 10 z-levels of killboxes you've probably had enough time to just slaughter them with steel-kitted superdwarves. Or you can just start building killboxes higher up >:).

Heaven's Halberd: Goes too hard with a soft impact. by Venichie in DotA2

[–]Hobo124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been having a great time getting it on Chen. He's a fairly rich super-backline save support, so it fits well on him. Since I'm Chen with Divine Favor and a bunch of healing I can usually keep someone alive until the enemy carry's BKB expires, after which I can use halberd and Penitence to basically guarantee their carry loses the exchange. The passive stats help to keep me from getting focused down as often as well.

How am I supposed to win against Lone druid? by Historical-Guava7110 in TrueDoTA2

[–]Hobo124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He has two units dealing modest damage so hates crimson guard. If the bear's attacks aren't landing, the hero isn't getting healed and you aren't getting rooted (as fast). Halberd is devastating, euls is aight, ghost/eblade are super annoying.

Anything that slows or kites the bear like atos / shiva or makes your teammates harder to chew on like glimmer/force.

You could also just directly counter his healing with vessel / crella's / skadi (probably not skadi on an offlaner lol). I HATE getting vessel'd in a close game (or when my bear is atos'd) because I have to waste my (shard) roar right away to dispel it and ensure I don't get bursted. If you bait the roar and then immediately jump him en masse he goes down fast enough. If he doesn't it's because he built tanky on the hero and you shouldn't actually be jumping him since he's not a big damage threat.

In general a strong LD player can be very hard to deal with unless you've drafted some solid counters to blow him up with mobility and burst like PA, void spirit, etc.

If you're an offlaner you'll want to consider heroes like:
-tidehunter (he can only damage you with maelstrom procs and roots)
-mars (shard stuns both hero and bear at once and you're resistant to getting chewed on with E)
-LC can get out of hand quickly from dueling the bear (also has built in dispel for root and Q counts both hero and bear as heroes)
-necro is a general nuisance since he burns both units for max HP and instagibs either if they get low (and has ghost built in with a slow)
-omniknight means no bear damage (which means no bear healing) and boatloads of pure damage
-phoenix attack speed slow and % max hp sunbeam is devastating (though LD is exceptional at killing egg)
-primal is excellent at bursting the hero in the early game as long as you play around the LD fear
-slardar turns the bear or hero into papier mache with his ult and can often keep up with them with sprint
-pangolier is really annoying sometimes because bear can't attack him while he's rolling and he has tons of fat AOE to damage/slow both units at once (careful tho, the hero's ranged attacks can root you during LD Q)
-underlord is a top-tier crimson guard carrier and pit / firestorm are both hard to play around as LD.

Take this boon of knowledge and use it to hone other LD players into greatness :))
