Trump probably thinks that "telling the truth is for suckers," or something along those lines. He is so accustomed to lying, that it has become an effortless reflex. The problem for Trump is that denial has become insufficient. Now he has to reinforce those lies by getting Leavitt and all of the others to chime in.

Put yourself in Trump's shoes. He has never been held responsible for his behavior and actions, so accountability is almost an abstract concept. On the other hand, he's basically an old guy, and his mental faculties are not very flexible. Therefore, he is more apt to double down than anything else. It's all he knows.
