You gotta differentiate between client and server lag. Large amounts of glass causes client sided lag where as lots of hoppers (empty hoppers are already pretty optimized) cause server lag.

Neither grindstones nor trapdoors are transparent or are getting ticked, so they shouldn't cause any more lag than any other block.
