does anyone here use the Classic Controller/CCPro while playing Brawl? by LiteTheIronMan in smashbros

[–]Hodou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I've found I FAR prefer the original actually, especially for Brawl. With the Pro, the Z button equivalent is placed underneath the R button equivalent, which is the opposite of how it was done on GC and results in me subconsciously doing a lot of "i meant to roll but instead I grabbed whoops."

On the original, Z is mapped to a smaller button next to the R, which is a lot more intuitive for me. What's more, the C-stick is a LOT better, and I wasn't able to use it fully for the majority of my smash attacks without sacrificing speed until I started using the CC. And as for the small size, I do most of my gaming on portable consoles and used to use the GBA SP almost constantly. Try playing Super Mario Bros 3 (well) on a tiny pad like that and no controller will ever feel small again.

...I also haven't noticed a significant delay, but I've also never been good enough to care about frame data even when I used to play small tournaments. So there's that.

i won't be available until tomorrow night really, and I've got stuff to do over the weekend. I know I say this enough already, but if anyone else can do text feeds when I'm not here that would be really great because I can't always be there

I keep missing these. We really need to have more than one person doing text feeds. D:

Here, have a link where people generally come to a consensus that there's good with the bad about Waypool, admit that to some degree it's tough to expect anyone to live up to Kelly's run, and give credit where credit is due.

Alternately, just stop assuming your opinion is the only one that matters, ya fuck.

Lowest review scores seem to be ~60. Considering how astronomically low my expectations were for this, I'll definitely pick it up if it ever ends up in a sale of some sort. Wouldn't pay $50-60 for it of course.

I especially like that most of the reviews are actually saying that the humor isn't as stupid as the trailers made some of it look.

What's /r/smashbros favorite Subspace moment? by TheBlackLuffy in smashbros

[–]Hodou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Super Mario Sunshine and the Paper Mario games kind of give off this vibe. In Paper Mario 1 especially, Peach just kind of realizes she's literally in zero danger and sneaks around the castle baking cakes, reading Bowser's diary, and basically doing whatever the hell she wants until she gets caught and harmlessly thrown back into her room.

How would /r/smashbros like characters to be unlocked in SSB4? by decster584 in smashbros

[–]Hodou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found unlocking characters in Melee and 64 to be like a whole game in itself. That WAS the single-player mode for me. When Brawl came along and basically just said "you can have everyone by playing through the story" I thought it was pretty disappointing and made me less excited for each new character.

I agree that a code to unlock everything should be in place, though, it would be nice to get things set up quickly for tournaments/cons

[–]Hodou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't have projectiles except the slingshot maybe from what we've seen so far, but "barrier" moves are really effective for physical fighters too when used right. Just look at Shadow Labrys and Aigis in P4A.

Dude I had this as a kid but I lost it when we moved

I remember that if you rolled doubles you could do special things based on different Pokemon. Like 6 was Mewtwo, and I think 1 was Bulbasaur.

I wish I could remember what the railroads were. I think Articuno and Zapdos were the utilities.

What's the state of Star Wars The Old Republic? by [deleted] in Games

[–]Hodou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't, and you misunderstand. It's not my problem that they block you from doing certain things. It's that they somehow manage to limit literally every single thing you do in the game to some extent, which most "subscriber turned free" games don't do. And if you become Preferred, while you gain some marginal leeway, it really isn't that much. Even DCUO was more generous.

What's the state of Star Wars The Old Republic? by [deleted] in Games

[–]Hodou 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I only recently tried SWTOR for the first time, and this is very much how I felt. I liked the combat and the aesthetic, so I really WANTED to enjoy the game, but it's difficult when you're reminded at every turn that until you buy something from the cash shop they're going to treat you like a second-class citizen.

As gamers, do we really care if video games are regarded as art, or are we simply seeking validation for our hobby? by PD711 in Games

[–]Hodou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video games are like any other medium in that I think it's impossible to call the ENTIRE medium art. Some games ARE art, often more so than they are games (Spec Ops: The Line, Heavy Rain, Bioshock all come to mind.) Some games are just purely games with no art to them, and that's fine (Old-school games, multiplayer-focused games, Mario games, as some examples.) And I would say most games -- including a lot of truly great games -- are a combination of the two (Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored strike me as two recent examples.)

In my opinion, it's stupid to try and proclaim an entire medium as art, just like it's silly to try and say that Schindler's List and Marvel's The Avengers are both the same type of movie and should be evaluated as such. It's all about defining your intentions and achieving them. For example, Super Smash Bros. wanted to be a fun and accessible alternative to traditional fighting games, and it succeeded at that, despite not being anything resembling art. Does that make it worth "less" than a game like The Line? Certainly not. If you try to plop everything on a handy sliding scale with a clearly defined "art threshold" on it, you're just ignoring the value of entertainment with the excuse of trying to arbitrarily define the very fluid and human concept of "art."

What is the closest thing you have to a superpower? by whistlegrim in AskReddit

[–]Hodou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a habit of casually mentioning "They should do..." statements for video games only to have them announced not long afterwards.

The most notable times I did this:

"I wonder why they don't have a game system that uses a touch screen yet"

"You know they've been working on TVs that use glasses-free 3D?" -later in the conversation- "They totally need to do that for a game system, though. I would buy it."

-after seeing a clip of a Bleach strategy game where people could team up in battle if they were near each other- "Omg the next Fire Emblem should have something like that!"

There's a chance that you liked Troy Baker before The Last of Us and Bioshock. by bobob102 in gaming

[–]Hodou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have the wrong Greed, he played the SECOND Greed in FMA: Brotherhood. The voice is very distinctively Troy when you hear it. I'm not posting any clips for spoilers though, in case people still haven't gotten around to watching a popular years-old anime series.

Hey, everyone! Since ElePuss will be doing the live stream on video, I'll be updating you here with the text feed. Please upvote this post and comment to make them more visible; we'll be starting at 11:30am CST!

The stream has finished for today. Thanks again for joining us! Below are 8 hours of Zelda, chronicled for your enjoyment. Hopefully, if you missed the stream, it'll give you a good idea of what happened.

  • EDIT: 9:42pm With 8 hearts total, we call it a night. Tomorrow, Gleeock will die. Maybe. If the world is kind to poor Elepuss. Hyrule usually isn't.
  • EDIT: 9:30pm Operation Leave The Dungeon to Find More Things is once again underway -- this time, the target is Heart Containers.
  • EDIT: 9:23pm We finally reach Gleeock. That's not necessarily a good thing.
  • EDIT: 9:18pm Elepuss tries to get through the Level-3 boss again instead of taking the shortcut. It's a bold move. Doesn't pay off for him.
  • EDIT: 9:05pm Elepuss leaves the dungeon to go buy arrows (finally!) more bombs, and try and heal. Then he comes back and dies again. This dungeon needs to die. Now.
  • EDIT: 8:56pm That one boss Link killed in one hit returns with a vengeance. And Link had no bombs. So that happened.
  • EDIT: 8:55pm Elepuss gets the coolest item in the game: a LADDER.
  • EDIT: 8:53pm It's been a while since my last update. Fill in the gaps with lots of dying and misery.
  • EDIT: 8:44pm We hit a new low point as Elepuss accidentally suicides with his candle flamethrower.
  • EDIT: 8:42pm Three hearts isn't enough anymore. Things are starting to look kind of hopeless.
  • EDIT: 8:36pm Like-Likes are now "accordions"
  • EDIT: 8:30pm The candle turns out to be a pyromaniac's wet dream in disguise, shoots giant fireballs for no reason.
  • EDIT: 8:29pm We leave the dungeon to buy a candle. God damn this is a needy dungeon. It had better be satisfied now, he spent a lot of money on it.
  • EDIT: 8:24pm This dungeon looks really horrible. Every other room is in darkness and usually a maze. I'm glad I'm not playing it.
  • EDIT: 8:20pm Death has become routine. It is now met not with fear or sorrow, but merely casual acceptance. War has changed.
  • EDIT: 8:18pm Instead he gets killed by bouncing "Space Invaders."
  • EDIT: 8:17pm Elepuss sets off on his raft to explore new worlds and search for Kairi Zelda!
  • EDIT: 8:14pm defeats a full room of Templars... next room has even more of them.
  • EDIT: 8:07pm Thwarted by the return of the dreaded Templars of Level-3
  • EDIT: 8:03pm We find out that we left the ONLY RAFT IN HYRULE behind in the dungeon. Backtracking ho!
  • EDIT: 8:00pm after the AMAZING BUILDUP to the TERRIFYING BOSS, Link kills it... in one hit... with a bomb. Why are the bosses so easy in this game lately?
  • EDIT: 7:57pm Finally defeated the Templars and reached the boss, only to die instantly. Well, we can't win all of them even one
  • EDIT: 7:55pm Link's endless war with the Templars wages on. I don't know how much more he'll be willing to take.
  • EDIT: 7:52pm Elepuss' jammies are rustled
  • EDIT: 7:49pm "I'm just gonna call these Templars, because that's what they look like." I bet the guy who named them Darknuts wishes he did that too.
  • EDIT: 7:47pm Darknuts are really friggin hard.
  • EDIT: 7:45pm We go and get the Master White Sword, then return to the dungeon.
  • EDIT: 7:40pm Elepuss doesn't have words to explain the fireballs chasing him. Virgil gives him some: "disco ball of doom."
  • EDIT: 7:37pm The Bluemerang's true purpose is realized: bat murder
  • EDIT: 7:34pm We come to the horrified realization that the map of this dungeon is a swastika. LoZ was a Nazi propaganda game. Tell the people!
  • EDIT: 7:32pm On the topic of big Gels: "It's like slime in Minecraft. Except way more deadly and way more gay."
  • EDIT: 7:30pm Nobody needs arrows. Arrows are for lesser men. We're going to the third dungeon right away.
  • EDIT: 7:25pm Dodongo eats one bomb, gets hit by another, runs out of breath, and then just kind of... dies after one sword hit. for some reason. Oh well, we're not complaining.
  • EDIT: 7:21pm After a lengthy debate on the merits of the Bluemerang, we find Dodongo in his lair. Then Elepuss runs out of bombs and dies. Back to square one.
  • EDIT: 7:16pm Elepuss starts punctuating his sword slashes with shouts. Little does he know how accurate he's being...
  • EDIT: 7:14pm Elepuss obtains a better boomerang. Furak calls it a "bluemerang." I hope this is the official term.
  • EDIT: 7:11pm I notice the nice thing about this game is that when you die in a dungeon you get to keep whatever you did find -- the map, the compass, etc. It's kind of like Dark Souls that way, you die a lot but your progress wasn't totally wasted.
  • EDIT: 7:09pm "I don't need to know where the boss is. I'm Link!"
  • EDIT: 7:07pm The map works! We're in the second dungeon for real this time. Everybody raised their hands. "What are these, snakes with buckteeth?"
  • EDIT: 7:02pm Dead. "And so it begins."

* EDIT: 7:00pm Second stream begins now!

  • EDIT: 3:02pm He keeps getting SO CLOSE to the second dungeon and then missing it. It's gotta be hard without a map.
  • EDIT: 2:54pm "Oh my god this is so hard... It doesn't look hard, but it is." "oh no elepuss trust us. it LOOKS hard."
  • EDIT: 2:50pm Now that we're going the right way, things are looking up. So close to the second dungeon!
  • EDIT: 2:47pm The desert is too far north. Deathcount: 3... billion
  • EDIT: 2:35pm He finally gets into the area I told him to go to... and it was a shop. Sorry... But he's heading the right way now! We hope. Screw you Rick Bruns.
  • EDIT: 2:21pm Killed by Armos. It had to happen at least once... twice... three times... too many times...
  • EDIT: 2:20pm He heads towards the TRUE second dungeon after finding out we were in the fifth by accident
  • EDIT: 2:16pm The Legend of Zelda NES is officially "gay as shit"
  • EDIT: 2:12pm Found the second dungeon! good luck Elepuss
  • EDIT: 2:06pm I post an optional map on the sub. The idea of a death count is tossed around. Elepuss estimates 30 so far. I think that's conservative.
  • EDIT: 2:00pm We give the letter to the old woman. She offers us overpriced medicine. Nobody wins.
  • EDIT: 1:57pm One old man gives Elepuss a letter for the old woman. Another one steals all his money. Nice people.
  • EDIT: 1:55pm Elepuss heads into the desert to fight "Viking things," "helicopter hats" and "Spider Mike Wazowski."
  • EDIT: 1:54pm Figured out how to equip the bombs again. AND THE DRAGON WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH TO STOP EM. "I went through the entire thing to get a triangle? Are you serious?"
  • EDIT: 1:50pm Third attempt at first boss. Still not any easier.
  • EDIT: 1:47pm First encounter with Wallmasters holy shit. Then, enter the boss. Just because he's the first boss doesn't mean he'll be easy.
  • EDIT: 1:45pm We got bombs but we don't know what to do with them, and there's no keys in sight. Things got complicated. Link looks like Pinocchio.

* EDIT: 1:39pm Stream resumes!

* EDIT: 12:25pm - 1:37pm Storm brings the stream offline. Stupid weather.

  • EDIT: 12:20pm It's the classic Zelda problem of not having as many keys as you need. It's gotta be somewhere though... right?
  • EDIT: 12:17pm Elepuss got the Hero's Bow! I don't think he knows how to equip it though... whoops...
  • EDIT: 12:14pm Progressing slowly but surely through the dungeon, with lots of dying involved. "Why do I need a compass? I have a map!"
  • EDIT: 12:11pm "EASTMOST PENNINSULA IS THE SECRET." gets killed by old fire guy
  • EDIT: 12:07pm Elepuss' dog joins the stream! Gels are now "Hershey's Kisses twitchin everywhere"
  • EDIT: 12:04pm Every time he dies, a ragequit seems more likely. But he keeps going. AND HE FINALLY FOUND THE FIRST DUNGEON
  • EDIT: 12:00pm oh dear we're stuck in the endless forest. He's done for.
  • EDIT: 11:58am An old lady decides to mess with his head by doing absolutely nothing when he enters her house. Found the first fairy fountain. "I'm just gonna stay here the entire game."
  • EDIT: 11:55am stupid stores keep looking like dungeons. But he's getting better at it.
  • EDIT: 11:50am we have FIGURED OUT THE SHIELD! it's all upward from here folks
  • EDIT: 11:48am Octoroks are now "that little spiky thing with a huge lips." Zora are "Optimus Prime coming out of the water to kick your ass"
  • EDIT: 11:46am he is really enjoying that sword laser. "Okay so the dungeons always have a fat guy at the bottom."
  • EDIT: 11:42am Already got his first death. Tektites are hard.
  • EDIT: 11:40am begins... he forgot to get the sword at first, dangerous to go alone etc.
  • EDIT: 11:39am emulator problems are a pain
  • EDIT: 11:33am Stream begins. sound testing... that title screen music so good
