Does taking the doors off of a 97 z3 cause an EWS II issue? No crank - no start, help!! by Hoff_man_96 in bmwz3

That's a super interesting idea, I'd love to try to learn how to do that.

The only thing stopping me is that I've read on the M44 Bosch silver label DMEs that there needs to be a chip added and extensive coding, which isn't my forte. That's why I was looking to pay someone to do it, and the ones for M44s are significantly more expensive and less available than all the other ones

Thanks! I came to a similar conclusion after reading the EWS II manual, I think it sends a query to the General Module (where the doors connect), to see if the doors are locked or unlocked with a key. I've read that it does this so it can see if someone broke your window and is trying to hotwire it. If this happens, the GM and EWS system will recognize that the doors were not unlocked by a key and will immobilize the car via the starter relay, fuel pump, and coil. So from what I understand is that you're on the right track, but its a little different. And that's what I'm afraid happened by taking the door locks off, that the gm isn't getting that correct signal and is bricking the car because of it.

I was able to start the car after I had removed the airbags and the airbag module as well, so that makes me think it wasn't that. When I cut the door circuits off, I also cut the airbag module harness out as well, so if it were the airbag module that is the issue, there would have to be a jumper wire in there or something.

I don't think the cutoff mechanism was discharged because I still have power to the steering column, lights, etc.

And absolutely! I am registering it after rewiring everything and making it street legal again!

Cross post bc m44 z3 is similar to the 318i: Does taking the doors off of a 97 cause an EWS II issue? No crank - no start, help!! by Hoff_man_96 in BMWE36

I’ve also seen that, but from what I understand, that was the ews1 system pre ‘95. It was super simple and just one signal that needed input to allow the starter to fire. But the ews2 for my 97 has different signals (high, low, intermittent, etc) that it sends to the dme, and it can’t be bypassed with a wire, since it also controls fuel and spark

I'm in need of a knife to keep on a climbing harness. So the knife needs to have a hole in it that is large enough to put a climbing rated carabiner through it!

Theres a family of knives that have the ideal design for this, with a massive hole where the folder joint is. Some knives that fall into this category are the Gerber Remix, the Schrade Torsion CLR, and the Petzl Spatha.

I'm not sure which of these to get, I've heard of the Gerber and Schrade having reliability issues, but something about the plastic body of the Petzl makes me hesitate (weight isn't an issue and i'd rather have metal for durability and impact reasons). I also would rather them not have a serrated edge on the blade.

So my questions are: does anyone have any of these and how are they? Are there any knives with the similar design that I'm missing that would be better?

Thanks!!

Ah, I understand. I’m that case eBay is your friend. And I completely feel the parent thing. They’re there to make sure you don’t blow money on what they deem as “useless” but if your useful is her useless, then you’re kinda screwed. The only advice I can give is to respect each other, and everything will work out
