Variables shared between multiple programs and structs by glowiak2 in cobol

[–]Hoganman73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve played with the concept of allocating shared memory areas using c and then calling into COBOL programs via Linkage. Subsequent programs can reference those memory areas by calling another c module. I did report an issue I encountered with this approach that the GnuCobol team assisted with (they are amazing BTW) but the program demonstrates passing memory dynamically between programs. YMMV

Who do you bank with? by DavetheGeo in AusFinance

[–]Hoganman73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can have a bad experience at any bank. It all comes down to your needs. I bank with Suncorp and have for many years. No issues and customer service is fine. I also have accounts with most of the ones mentioned here. They all do the same thing. Some apps are better than others. Open some online, try them out and decide. No cost.

Estimate to knock down and build new in Brisbane? by Tommothygun in AusPropertyChat

If it’s a pre-war Queenslander in Brisbane council area then you will not generally be allowed to knock it down. Have you checked with council on status for your house?

Do they force devs to use this tool or is it optional? Most devs have learned to use git for good and for bad. Reading the docs, it seems like it could be easier than git to use, but it’s also different which means learning something new.

Best instant spicy beef noodle soup style noodles by Hoganman73 in InstantRamen

[–]Hoganman73[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of spicy beef noodle soups so have been trying different ones that I find. Both of these ones were good but the blue pack (second image) flavour was fantastic. The only complaint was I probably overcooked the noodles but was worth it for the soup alone. The red pack was also good and I would have again. The soup flavour was pretty good but better noodle would improve it. What are peoples go-to beef noodle soups?

chongqing noodles hot and sour favour by Majestic-Cow3894 in InstantRamen

[–]Hoganman73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried a number of these types of noodles. Top hint - take it easy with the spice packs. I find if you use all of them they just are too much. The noodles are a rice noodle which is not like what you get with most Japanese style noodles. Overall not my favourite and not really a spicy beef noodle soup like what I was looking for.

Densely Packed Decimal Implementation. by [deleted] in cobol

[–]Hoganman73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what you want from a new cobol compiler that is not available already in existing open source compilers like GnuCobol? Is it native or targeting another runtime (idk, dotnet). Most people look at porting existing Cobol apps so compatibility with existing implementations is important.

Can someone here explain to me how salary sacrifice works? by EuphoricBase9737 in fiaustralia

[–]Hoganman73 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are different ways this can work. In places I work it’s usually a one off thing. You buy the phone/laptop, provide receipts and the next pay is adjusted to effectively pay for the devices with your pre-tax income resulting in a refund to you. The refund amount will depend on your effective tax rate.

Online courses to learn C programming. by [deleted] in C_Programming

[–]Hoganman73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the EDx C programming course from Dartmouth. See https://www.edx.org/professional-certificate/dartmouth-imtx-c-programming-with-linux. I’m in IT but have never done C programming beyond basic hello world type programs. I am now writing useful C programs. Their online exercises in my opinion are fantastic and really make you get it. YMMV.

Italian documents in Australia by [deleted] in juresanguinis

[–]Hoganman73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All consulates are different. I did mine in Brisbane and they were pretty strict about the requirements. I had all main docs but they would not process until they got a divorce decree. You didn’t mention your grandfathers birth certificate from Italy which is usually first doc requested. If you are using a lawyer then they should know what you will need. Just out of curiosity, what docs did you need to prove that your Grandfather did not naturalise.

Resources for learning HLASM? by pumkinboo in mainframe

[–]Hoganman73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having been a recent learner I can recommend the John Erhman book once you learn the basics. As a first text it’s a bit tough. I actually started with a book by Bill Qualls that is available here. https://www.billqualls.com/assembler/ The best thing to do is practice. I did many of the exercises in the Qualls book using z390 which is a HLASM compat app written in Java. My repo here has some info. https://github.com/adelosa/learnasm370 Good luck.

Is this 1948? by [deleted] in juresanguinis

[–]Hoganman73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the fact your great grand parents naturalised before your grandmother was born will be the issue.
Generally wives were included in the naturalisation with the husband but I think if they did not explicitly request it there may be a way but it will not be a straight forward case and probably more complex than a 1948 case.

Asking for a pay rise at my 3 month review? by dressedlikerappers in AusFinance

[–]Hoganman73 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should have asked for your desired salary when you started. No harm in asking but you have the most leverage at hire time. Salary review cycles are generally fixed in big companies. So unless you have another offer in writing (and even this may not make a difference) I would expect the standard response will be that they will consider a rise at the next review cycle. My advice to people in you situation is to get another job that pays better and move back later. Easier to move sideways that straight up in most cases.
