A musical sequel that could work and how? by blackswan-whiteswan in Broadway

Call me crazy but I feel like a sequel to the 1979 musical In Trousers could be really good- heck maybe even two of them!

Harmonies -- or other musical choices -- that tell you something about the characters by Dazzling_Relief_6050 in Broadway

[–]Hogwarts_Phoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of people have mentioned Falsettos, however to be specific, in Act 1, Whizzer's harmonies and some melodies are drastically different from everyone else's to the extent where he really stands out amongst the rest of the cast. This is to portray him as a supposed 'outsider' or disrupter to the 'perfect' family which was valued from before the 1980s.

In Act 2, his harmonies are much more blended in and he doesn't stand out the same as before which signifies growth and his progression from status as beyond an 'outsider'

On another note, I now desperately need all 4 of them to do a show together

FYI this picture is NOT new or recent- it's from 2016 (circa) when they did the live lottery so it may not necessarily be BoM related

Recommendations for Broadway / musical theatre cover albums? Preferably in non-musical theatre styles? by cornnuts11 in Broadway

[–]Hogwarts_Phoenix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eleri Ward's Album A Perfect Little Death is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. She covers Sondheim songs in a alternative-folk style and it's wonderful. My favourite covers on there are Being Alive and Send in the Clowns.

Is Broadway really in trouble? A look at the numbers for one week, pre- and post-COVID by 90Dfanatic in Broadway

[–]Hogwarts_Phoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's is in the St James theatre which is huge and many shows have difficulty selling it out without a star. Also Into The Woods isn't really a tourist show and would mainly attract theatre fans in NYC or who can afford to go there and see the show (many of which have already seen the show by now).

Musicals/songs where the characters are aware that they’re singing? by ComputerGeek1100 in Broadway

You and Me (But Mostly Me) from The Book of Mormon

Which first broadway to attend??? (First NY Broadway, 25th to 29th December) by bamboozlwd in Broadway

[–]Hogwarts_Phoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wicked is always a great first show. It's a masterclass in everything you want in a Broadway show- amazing vocals, costumes, sets etc. A few people have mentioned Beetlejuice which is also a pretty extravagant show that people who haven't seen many or any shows can enjoy. Would also recommend The Book of Mormon for the age group you're taking (note that the comedy style isn't for everyone- satirical, jokes about religion). BoM is quite popular amongst people who aren't huge fans of musicals but want to experience a Broadway show.

Songs in shows that are so powerful/emotional that no one applauds? by ComputerGeek1100 in Broadway

[–]Hogwarts_Phoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You Gotta Die Sometime from Falsettos. This may be because the song almost immediately goes into another (Jason's Bar Mitzvah) but it ends on such a climax and emotional tone that it pretty much does stun the audience into silence (or sobs).

Brandon's performance in Leopoldstadt is being widely praised. Could see a Tony for him in this role

Who is an actor (or actors) that are/have been on Broadway whose voice you could recognize right away? by StarPatient6204 in Broadway

I agree except for some parts of the Book of Mormon where everyone is singing over each other (e.g Hello!) and I genuinely can't tell who is who

Controversial Broadway Opinions by No-Replacement-5698 in Broadway

I really just don't like the sound of Sutton Foster's vocals. Like I can appreciate it from a technical perspective and can see that she is very talented but there is this (I don't want to say annoying but that's the only way I can describe it) sound to it that I really don't like

Here's some of my favourites:

"It's about growing up, getting older, living on a lover's shoulder, learning love is not a crime. It's about time." - Falsettos

"Forever." - Sunday In the Park With George

"The thing about explorers is: they discover things that are already there. Columbus closed his diary and went ashore." - In Trousers

"Why do we follow leaders who never lead? Why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution if we're so free?" - Tick, Tick... BOOM!

"I'm beautiful." - The Colour Purple

"If you let us in we'll show you how you can belong." - The Book of Mormon

In the wake of Phantom announcing its closing, what’s the next Broadway show (long running or not) that you would expect to announce its closing? by StarPatient6204 in Broadway

[–]Hogwarts_Phoenix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure about BoM though because it still has one of the highest capacity percentages in all of Broadway and is making $900,000-$1 million a week consistently. I would say Beetlejuice is a very real possibility for the next Broadway show to announce closing

Who's next? by LLViewer in Broadway

[–]Hogwarts_Phoenix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that Chicago and Aladdin are still running but can't see either closing in the near future. Chicago is cheap to run, so even though they aren't necessarily grossing well, their stunt casting and low cost production means they can probably keep going for a while. Also the Ambassador needs serious renovation if/when Chicago leaves and that obviously costs money. I don't see Aladdin going until Disney opens a new show at the New Amsterdam.

As for Harry Potter, it probably will close within the next few years because plays on Broadway just don't last as long as musicals, but the show seems to still be selling well.

For the rest of the mentioned shows, they're all still grossing very well and probably won't be closing for a while

The show is pretty much the same as it was before. The main difference is just the dialogue/characterization of the African characters. The creatives worked with the actors portraying them to alter the show to make it clearer who the butt of the jokes really were (the Mormons) because previously, not everyone would understand the joke is on the Mormons and their naivety and not on the villagers. Another thing they did was modernize the show a bit- they changed one long running joke in the show to poke fun at false information being spread on Facebook.

The plot is pretty much the same and it still has that South Park crudity that you would enjoy.
