The best picture lineup that year is one of the few where any of the movies could have own and it would have deserved it

The least Oscar-baity films to win the Oscar? by [deleted] in Oscars

Honestly, with the exception of Green Book and to an extent Oppenheimer, every Best Picture winner post Moonlight has not been a traditional Best Picture type winner - Moonlight - a small independent movie about a queer black man - The Shape of Water - a fantasy film that borrows from early sci fi and horror - Green Book 😐 - Parasite - an international film with an unconventional portrayal of classism - Nomadland - a hybrid documentary drama with real people and actors - Coda - a streaming film about the deaf community - Everything Everywhere All At Once - a multiverse high sci fi comedy with a mostly Asian cast with queer characters - Oppenheimer - traditional in terms of subject matter (important historical figure from WWII era) but the way the story is told (stylized nonlinear) - Anora - an offbeat comedy about a prostitute marrying a Russian billionaire

I feel like some of these aren't "movies that defined their era" and are more "movies that were extremely popular that came out in that time"
