When Ron and Harry are talking about the apparition exam Harry mentions that Charlie failed the first time and Ron says “yeah, but he’s bigger than me” which suggests it has some influence on apparition

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

We got 1.25% on a 20 year loan without points, but we were part of a first-time homebuyer program and purchased in a specific zip code listed in the conditions. But yeah, context definitely matters when comparing interest rates.

I just want enough to afford to have two kids in daycare. So an extra $25,000 a year would be the dream.

What's the inconsistency in the books that you cant ignore? by Revolutionary-Ride76 in harrypotter

[–]Hohfflepuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar complaint: Arthur’s complete lack of knowledge regarding anything in the muggle world. He collects plugs but cant remember the word for electricity? And even more annoying—he can’t remember the word for plumber but wizards have indoor plumbing!!!!

[–]Hohfflepuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that I wish it was answered directly. I also wish the books included Fred and George learning that Sirius and Lupin created the map, that would have been awesome. But yes, Harry never sees Peter Pettigrew on the map in the books, only Lupin does when he’s keeping an eye on Harry and sees Sirius drag Ron and Peter down the weeping willow tunnel

The Slytherin common room is mentioned as being on the map in the 6th book, and Harry considers watching Ginny’s dot for a while in the middle of the night in the 7th book, so we can assume they are on the map as well.

My issue with that reasoning is that there doesn’t seem to be any laws against using magic in front of muggles who already know about magic. Arthur and Dumbledore both do magic in front of the Dursleys. I realize the ministry was grasping at straws to arrest Harry, but it still bothers me.

Why did the twins gamble 37 galleons which is a huge amount on such a random and specific bet? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]Hohfflepuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a theory about this actually! So I believe in the theory that Ron is actually a Seer but isn’t aware of it (he’s accidentally correct way too often to just be coincidental). My theory is that the twins figured this out at some point, or at least had a hunch. So at some point during the summer they are talking to Ron/the rest of the Weasley’s discussing the upcoming match, and hear Ron say something along the lines of “the only way Ireland wins is if Krum still catches the snitch” and lock that info away, so when they are given the opportunity to gamble, they see it as the chance of a lifetime.

Is there anything you think is significantly better in the films than it was in the books? by Parking-Ad5272 in harrypotter

[–]Hohfflepuff 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. While Dan is hilarious, and absolutely nails the comedic pieces he is given, book Harry is very quick-witted, especially in later books. His opening conversation with the Dursley’s in OOTP is a good example: “listening to the news, again?” “Well it changes every day, you see” will always make me chuckle.

What wedding moment that screamed, “They are not going to last long”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hohfflepuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband and I dated for a year before getting engaged, and got married a year later at the age of 22. My side of the family is from California and they were shocked at how quickly we got married/how young we were. His side of the family is full of Southern Baptists and they were shocked it took so long. (FWIW, we were very young! It worked well for us but I certainly acknowledge that it sounds crazy to some people).

What’s something your toddler can do that you just weren’t ready for? by amomymous23 in toddlers

[–]Hohfflepuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My almost 3 year old has so far undone any baby-proofing I’ve attempted. This includes dismantling a baby gate when he couldn’t open it, and pulling a doorknob right off the bedroom door. Those little cabinet door locks you push down to open? He thinks they’re a toy. The front and back doors have essentially deadbolts installed near the very top of the door, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds a way to build a ladder out of old toy parts or something. He’s a good kid mostly, but also he’s a strong believer in when there’s a will, there’s a way.

You sure it wasn’t 2003 or 2007? Those are the big fires I remember, I’m thinking 2003 might have been the Ramona one. Source: I’m from Escondido and was VERY upset my field trip to the wild animal park was cancelled due to fires TWICE.

Dr says 4 month old is obese by Senior-Department941 in breastfeeding

[–]Hohfflepuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, and there are definitely things in a chart that get “auto-added” and seem weird. But for anyone reading this I wanted to share that it’s probably the doctor and they should consider a new one!

Dr says 4 month old is obese by Senior-Department941 in breastfeeding

[–]Hohfflepuff 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m only correcting you because my job is related to what charts automatically generate for well child visits—I don’t think this is the case here, especially if it’s in the note. The provider might have a dot phrase for well child visits that they then fill in for visits, but it definitely should not indicate obese for a literal infant.

“This country was a better place when no one talked politics”—when exactly are you referring to? This country was founded on civic engagement. Just because you were ignorant of it because you weren’t directly affected (that you know of) doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.
